‘The Outsiders’ 25th anniversary

posted by Nell Minow

Last week, I wrote about movies with all-star casts. Some movies have all-star casts — retrospectively. When they are made, the actors are not well known but soon afterward many or most of them become superstars. One classic example is a movie that is (incredibly) celebrating its 25th anniversary, “The Outsiders.”
One of three movies based on books by teen favorite author S. E. Hinton to be filmed in 1982-83, “The Outsiders” is the story of rival gangs the Greasers and the Socs (for “socials”). Director Francis Ford Coppola, who also cast a group of future superstars in “The Godfther,” put together an extraordinarily talented collection of young actors including Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Ralph Maccio, Matt Dillon, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estavez, and Diane Lane. Hinton herself appears briefly as a nurse and Coppola’s daughter Sofia, who would become famous behind the camera for “Lost in Translation,” appears as a child.

Did the folks at Disney even watch "Brave?"  One of the great strengths of Pixar's first movie starring a female character (and its first originally written by a woman, Brenda Chapman, though she was replaced by a male director) was that its feisty heroine, Merida, looked like a real girl and not a

Want to Know What James Franco Thinks of "The Great Gatsby?"
I'm interested in James Franco's take on "The Great Gatsby" because of what this polymath who attended two grad schools at once has to say about the challenges of adapting great writing to the screen and the differing goals and audience expectations of a book now viewed as a classic and a movie. Magic is in the air.  And on the screen.  Two big-budget films with some of Hollywood's biggest stars playing magicians are being released within a few months of each other.  In March, we had the silly comedy The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, with Steve Carell and Jim Carrey.  Coming up is the en

This time, there's crying in "Star Trek."  And some very significant time on Earth as well.  This story is in the most literal sense, close to home. Writer-director J.J. Abrams, who rebooted Gene Roddenberry's original "Star Trek" saga with a rousing 2009 origin story prequel now takes us clos

This movie is very well known to my son’s generation (in their 20′s). It is an example of a producer and a director having a keen eye for talent, and then that talent being allowed and encouraged to develop. The book is as significant as the movie, too. It is well read in many schools and has become a literary rite of passage as is To Kill a Mockingbird and a few others. As rare as it is to get an ensemble of actors like this, I think it is even more rare for a book and the movie from it becoming as significant a classic. Of course a few have made the transition, but not many.

Im only 12 and I read the book!I thought the movie was craptastic compared to the book but i was soooo sad when Johnny and Dally died! I was like “Nooooooo!!! Dally’s too hot to die!!” In the movie many, many, many parts were left out like with Johnny’s mom and Soda’s gf and it was more about Johnny then Pony,Dally and SodaPop. Did Soda even have a line?
