Make Em Laugh -- The (Very Funny) History of Comedy

Sunday January 25, 2009

There is no better way to strengthen family connections than combining shared laughter and history. So every family should make time to watch the hilarious new PBS series "Make Em Laugh," the history of comedy on television and in the movies in the United States, from the silent era to Jon Stewart, with current comedians commenting on their inspirations and influences. Episodes on slapstick, satire, pushing the limits, and verbal humor are on the schedule (NOTE: some mature material)

I have been looking forward to this show since I first heard about it. It will be recorded for later reference - or until I can buy the program from PBS. Once of my most thumbed through collection of books is the role of humor in religion (anyone fool or bully can make you cry, but only a real empathic genius can make you laugh). So this will be a great addition to my library.

Thanks, jestrfyl (I wonder if your screen name is a reference to laughter?). I love the quote from W.H. Auden about people who "don't kid themselves our care is consolable but believe a laugh is less heartless than tears."
