Stevanne Auerbach is better known as “Dr. Toy,” and she and her website are great resources for parents on issues of toys and ply. Her book is Dr. Toy’s Smart Play: How To Raise A Child With a High PQ (Play Quotient)
The book is an indispensable guide for parents. The “work” of young children is play. It is through their imaginative play that they process their understanding of the world and learn everything from constructing a narrative to taking turns. The book has very useful information about guiding children to the kind of play they will find most satisfying and inspiring, play that will enable them to develop a sense of independence, mastery, and confidence. It has wise counsel on the pros and cons of gender-specific toys and information about toys for children with special needs and special talents. It has lists of the top 100 toys and the craft supplies that every family should have on hand every day. It is a welcome reminder of the importance of play for both children and their parents.

If I could design he perfect job, it would involve a lot of playing with toys. My special interest is helping parents play with their kids. I have know the good doctor’s work for a while and have quoted her from time to time. It is interesting to see her updates.
One of the things about board game rules is that I have often enjoyed the negotiations about unclear rules and the development of house rules. Often they have become a standard that the game publisher will adopt, or at least promote. Helping kids and or families learn to do this is really beneficial when it some to negotiating other things in life. So I am not always quick to work so hard on finding the actual, pre-planned, provided rules. I guess the ultimate game in this sense would be “Calvin Ball”. Now THAT’S fun!

Calvin Ball is the best! Did you ever see a movie called “Bang the Drum Slowly?” It has a similar game called Tegwar (it stands for The something Game Without Any Rules).
I’m glad to see people like you and Dr. Toy recognizing the importance of play, as essential to child development as food and sleep.
