The most unexpected comic superstar of the 1990′s was one-time leading man Leslie Nielsen, who died today at age 84. The son of a Canadian mountie, Nielsen appeared in a number of golden age television dramas before his lead role in “Forbidden Planet,” an outer-space drama inspired by Shakespeare’s “The Tempest.” He went on to play bland leads and less-bland heavies in crime stories, costume drama, and even one of the sugary Tammy

“Don’t call me Shirley!” Of course, I remember many of Leslie Nielsen’s serious roles but how delightful when he discovered that his silver-haired dignified demeanor could make for great comedy. He will be missed.

Agreed with all the Huffington Post’s choices, but I’d add two scenes: the bit in The Naked Gun where he pays off an informant at the docks only to get it all back and more, and the scene in the Naked Gun 2 1/2 where he’s talking about boxers with Hocken and Nordberg.
