Reposting — Hag Sameach! Passover is not just about remembering the story of the Exodus from Egypt. It is about telling the story. Thousands of years before people talked about “learning styles,” the Seder included many different ways of telling the story, so that everyone would be included, and everyone would feel the power of the journey toward freedom. The Haggadah makes the story come alive through taste, smell, and touch as well as sight and hearing, and through the example of the four sons it presents the story to the wise, the simple, the skeptic, and most especially to the young — one of the highlights of each Seder is when the youngest person present asks the traditional four questions, beginning with “Why is this night different from all other nights?”If they had known about movies back in the time of Moses, they would have included that form of story-telling, too. I have two classics that I keep in my shelf. I have used these with kids, though adults get alot from them too. One is the Rug Rats Passover. It is cute and funny and helpful for understanding passover in a culture that is not jewish. the other is the Animated Haggadah. It is an exceptionally clever, claymation Hagaddah, with all of the parts and voices and stories. I have the companion book for it as well. These are among the few pieces I do not lend out because I am sure I could not replace them.

I second the nomination of Rugrats Passover. We’re also big fans of the Donny Osmond version of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at my house, which isn’t a Passover movie per se, but gives context to the whole “enslaved by Pharoah” aspect of the Passover story. It is mega-cheesy, yet when Donny appears singing Andrew Lloyd Weber tunes in flowing robes, it is hard not to get religion.

Great additions, Erica and jestrfyl! I like Rugrats Passover a lot. I must see the claymation Haggadah! And there’s nothing wrong with a little cheesiness when the story and music are as great as in “Joseph!” Especially when Mr. Purple socks is singing and dancing.

I don’t know how available the claymation haggadah is anymore (I got mine more than 10 years ago), so if you can’t find it let me know. “Something” can be arranged and a copy sent to you.
