Nashville, Tennessee – Country music Rosanne Cash is facing brain surgery for a rare but benign condition and must cancel the last four dates on her “Black Cadillac” tour.
The announcement was made Tuesday by Manhattan Records, the 52-year-old singer’s music label. Cash is expected to make a full recovery and resume recording and touring next spring.
“She does want everyone to know that it’s a benign condition, and it’s not life-threatening,” said her manager, Danny Kahn. “It’s nothing like a tumor or hemorrhage or anything. It’s elective surgery.”
Kahn said Cash has been diagnosed with chiari I malformation.
According to the American Syringomyelia Alliance Project, a nonprofit clearinghouse for information about chiari and related disorders, the disorder is a congenital malformation of the skull that affects the brain and spinal cord.
Symptoms, which include severe head and neck pain worsened by coughing, sneezing or straining, often don’t show up until adulthood, the organization said.
“She’s somehow accepted many of them through the course of her own life, the sort of discomforts that you learn to live with,” Kahn said. “She’s noticed them more over the course of this last year.”
Cash, who lives in New York City, will have the surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital, her record label said.
Cash is the daughter of the late country star Johnny Cash. Her hits include the crossover “Seven Year Ache” and “The Way We Make a Broken Heart.” She signed with EMI-based Manhattan Records earlier this year.
She has been touring in support of her latest album, “Black Cadillac.”
Her career was interrupted for more than two years by vocal cord polyps, but she recovered and resumed recording.
Cash has written a book of short stories and collaborated on a children’s book.

Ok, while this is more serious than the death of a 90 year old guy since a much younger person’s life will be at risk, how is it relevant to religion/morality/etc.?

Our family saw Rosanne Cash in Modesto, CA in September. She was a delight! Very talented and inspiring, in an age when young people with half the talent get so much more recognition.
I was so impressed with the video you featured on Beliefnet.com – Rosanne dealing with grief. I emailed it to my entire mailing list.
In Sunday school we learned a song – THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE, (I’m gonna let it shine). Rosanne, your light truly does shine! Bless you. I will be praying for you!

The article about griefing about her parents helped me as I lost my father around the same time frame. It was all about timing & I appreciated her words & video about death of a parent. They helped, Dad was a big JC fan also during his life. My prayers are for Roseann as she faces her surgery. All the best!!

I was emailed this information by a friend and she asked me to let you know that I have honored your family and your Dad by painting a ten-foot guitar for the Gibson Guitar Town project in Nashville, Tennessee. The “Ring of Fire” guitar now sits in front of Sony Records on Music Row. Why is this important? Because this guitar/artwork raised $6,600.00 for Cystic Fibrosis, The United Way, and several other charities. Hopefully in some small way this money can help save the lives of others who suffer.
Rosanne, I am keeping you in my prayers for a successful surgery, a speedy recovery, and a renewed and vital and exciting life ahead.
May God’s blessing be upon you. Sincerely, Marsha Rusk/visual artist
