Gay Man Sues Publishers Over Bible Verses

posted by akornfeld | 5:30pm Thursday July 10, 2008

Grand Rapids Press
Cascade Township, Mich. (RNS) – A gay man is suing two heavyweight Christian publishers, claiming their versions of the Bible that refer to homosexuality as a sin violate his constitutional rights and have caused him emotional pain and mental instability.
Bradley LaShawn Fowler of Canton, Mich., is seeking $60 million from Zondervan, based in Cascade Township, and $10 million from Nashville, Tenn.-based Thomas Nelson Publishing.
Fowler filed the suit in federal court against Zondervan on Monday (July 7), the same day U.S. District Judge Julian Abele Cook Jr. refused to appoint an attorney to represent him in his case against Thomas Nelson.
Fowler filed a suit against Thomas Nelson in June. He is representing himself in both claims.
“The Court has some very genuine concerns about the nature and efficacy of these claims,” the judge wrote.
Fowler, 39, alleges Zondervan’s Bibles referring to homosexuality as a sin have made him an outcast from his family and contributed to physical discomfort and periods of “demoralization, chaos and bewilderment.”
The intent of the publisher was to design a religious, sacred document to reflect an individual opinion or a group’s conclusion to cause “me or anyone who is a homosexual to endure verbal abuse, discrimination, episodes of hate, and physical violence … including murder,” Fowler wrote.
Fowler’s suit claims Zondervan’s text revisions from a 1980s version of the Bible included, and then deleted, a reference to homosexuality in 1 Corinthians without informing the public of the changes.
The other suit, against Thomas Nelson and its New King James Bible, mirrors the allegations made against Zondervan.

Interesting. When a child who’s destroyed by religion, (not treating the child medically) and one who is hurt by exorcism can’t get justice because it involves religion, he’ll need all the heavenly help he can get.

Hey, he is suing 2 men for their version of the Bible, dealing with homosexuality, claiming it has caused him distress. Isn’t it strange no one has thought of that before? The Bible certainly must have caused some more folks distress since it’s very first publication besides him. After all it is a very old book, with who knows how many versions? Good luck, Dude. I’d think the courts would have better things to do. If he actually won this, just think how many law suits other’s could start, because of the teachings in the Bible. If someone was raised with it as a guide, being told constantly they were going to Hell if they did something wrong, and it caused them mental distress, and made them unable to work…think of the trial? That would be facinating.

On the one hand he’s got a great case (if the jury would listen to it) but on the other hand there’s freedom of speech and publishing and I think those trump here.
But great harm is done when people take the Bible seriously and it seems like someone should be made to pay for it. I’m just not sure who.

I think he’d be happy if people just wouldn’t use it to try to convince others homosexuality is bad.

I think this is a silly suit, but is does point out the fact that bibles are often translated by people who have a religious and/or political agenda. If a Bible has the word “homosexual” in it, it’s either a poor and lazy translation, or one with a homophobic agenda. It’s a little like reading “Blessed are those on public assistance.”

Interesting. Why just Nielson and Zondervan? They are not the only publishers of Bibles. (Harper Collins, Augsburg, Concordia…)They publish the same versions as well. (While the Lutheran Chruch traditionally uses the NRSV in its lectionary, I grew up using the Good News Bible in Sunday School and I think Augsburg also publishes NIV Bibles as well.)
To the best of my knowlege, from my husband who recently earned is Master’s of Divinity, the word “homosexual” technically means “soft people” from the Greek. I forget the rest of the information/definition with that. I guess if Mr. Fowler would bother to study the original Greek, he may not have a case.
I have had “emotional distress” from being raised in the church. However, I worked through it with myself, friends and even with God. Heh. Perhaps if I had thought to sue, my husband wouldn’t have student loans and we (along with our nine and a half month old daughter) wouldn’t be living with his parents.

I cannot imagine any judge considering this case seriously. The only one’s smiling are the lawyers. It is frivolous and a misuse of court time. The rest of the discussion is suitable for coffee rooms in seminaries or sitting around with a pitcher of beer or something like that.

anonymous-
“Homosexual” does not mean “soft people”. One of the places in modern Bibles where the word “homosexual” now appears….replaced words that said soft male….which as an accurate translations from the earlier texts. In the ancient texts, the Greek words (there are several) for homosexual/homosexuality do not appear…nor, do the appear in texts written in Aramaic.
Peace!

The seventh paragraph in this article touches on this one from the whole article elsewhere:
According to the Chicago Tribune, the suit against Zondervan claims 1982 and 1987 editions of the publisher’s Bible explicitly declare homosexuality to be wrong in 1 Corinthians 6:9: “Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders.” Fowler claims that the word “homosexual” was edited out of the 1989 and 1994 editions but that consumers were not informed, and that because his family pastor uses the older versions, he’s been shunned by his family as a result.
Similar charges are filed against Thomas Nelson Publishers, as well.
He may be able to win this, because other Bibles by other Publishers probably have not added their personal opinions as these have.
There seem to be many more adulterers, and possibly idolaters in most congregations in Churches everywhere. Do they not know that they are wicked, too? Let’s see what can we take away from them? They can marry and do everything that everyone else can, why aren’t we shocked about them?

Henrietta thanks, that’s fascinating. So much for the inerrance of Bibles; in fact people apparently put things in and out at will.

Henrietta, I echo nnmns.
That information is interesting. It continues to prove to me that there is no way that the Bible can be “the true word of God”. Too many translators, copiers, etc.

This nothing more than opportunistic vindictive-ness… such lawsuits are absurd. He might as well bring suit against the lion’s share of evangelical protestant churches. He’s not simply excluding particular translations or interpretations, he’s seaking personal reparations… it’s beyond me how anyone could interpret this as anything other than ridiculous, but then again, I probably won’t bring a suit against the people who feel otherwise…

Iggy, “He’s not simply excluding particular translations or interpretations, he’s seeking personal reparations”.
He and many GLBT suffer everything this young man says he has, perhaps they should all join in his lawsuit, like they do with drugs that have hurt people, or have killed people. We’ve all seen these on our TV’s haven’t we? When verses become so virulent that they destroy people’s lives shouldn’t we all be concerned, as we are with RX Drugs? If adulters, and etc. were treated with the same contempt as GLBT and it intefered with their lives in the same degree as Homosexuals the verses would have to go!

i just say if you dont like what you read dont read it everyone has a right to there own beliefs and if you dont like what they are doing because of there beliefs then dont be with them there are many people shunned daily from there families and it has nothing to do with the bible or its’ teachings or practices so dont blame your issues on others until you find the real issue in yourself!
