More than eight in 10 white Americans would vote for a racial minority for president, but fewer whites who take the Bible literally or who worship in an all-white congregation would do the same, according to a recent survey.
Research from Baylor University’s Institute for Studies of Religion found that 84 percent of non-Hispanic white Americans said they would vote for a racial minority if he or she was nominated by their party.
But only 75 percent of respondents who said the Bible should be taken literally, and 69 percent of those who attend an all-white congregation, would vote that way.
“For many churchgoing whites, attending religious services does not bring them into contact with persons of other racial backgrounds,” said Kevin Dougherty, a member of a team of researchers for the 2008 Baylor Religion Survey.
“It is easy to be distrustful of another group of people when someone is not personally acquainted with anyone from that group. The
2008 presidential election will test the consequences of America’s continued religious segregation by race.”
Researchers found that about eight in 10 white Protestants would vote for a racial minority, while nine out of 10 whites with no religious affiliation would support a candidate of that description.
The findings from a sample of 1,325 non-Hispanic whites was part of the 2008 Baylor Religion Survey that was designed by the institute and conducted by the Gallup Organization. The study has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

I wonder what part of this is really related to church/Bible and what part is really just that the people referenced live in an area where for whatever reason…..blacks and whites do not mix. The article says that the white people do not come in contact with black people at church…well, don’t they come in contact with blacks at work?…the store?….PTA/PTO meetings?…etc?
Peace!

I think it’s partly not knowing more folks but largely it’s fear. These are the kind of people who are afraid to even think about a universe different than the fairy tale they grew up with and who are afraid of people even a little less like them. And a lot of them are easily fooled; they thought GWB was like them when in fact he was a spoiled rich kid, and they think Sarah Palin is like them when in fact she’s pretty darn well off and of course a pretty good liar. But she sure knows how to play on their cowardice!

nnms-
I completely agree that this is fear related!

I hope they stop thinking fear and pay attention to Obamas honest talk and his plans to get America back on its feet again. He’s the best man to come along in a very long time with a clear mind and the right intentions. I watched an elderly, elderly, woman in line at a Pharmacy today, and started to pay attention as she was talking to a Pharmacist with him asking her if there was something wrong, and she saying yes there was, that she had to give the RX back to him because she couldn’t afford to buy it. This was the first time I wittnessed this, read a lot about this happening, but first time to see it. With Obamas health plans he has laid out this won’t keep happening. With McCain’s it will continue.

Wasn’t slavery condoned by the Bible?
I too find it hard to believe that the literalists never come in contact with people of color somewhere in their daily life…work, school parents, grocery stores, department stores, malls etc. Of course, being around different people in a public environment doesn’t make one “trust” different people, and even working with someone doesn’t always cause trust. I do tend to believe that they don’t “worship” with folks that are black. In my experience after spending much of my life in the south and now visiting there often, I find that the churches are not integrated. The majority of blacks and whites are in separate churches.

Interesting news out via Politico.com. Sarah Palin, the “average hockey mom” that so many Joe Six Packs seem to have the hots for; she wears $150,000 of fancy clothes, hairdoes, etc. courtesy of the RNC.
How stupid must some unusually foolish middle Americans feel that they didn’t notice their Sarah wasn’t exactly dressed or made up like a middle American.
McCain’s choice, a nightmare for thinking Americans of all stripes, has been a real boon for good old Sarah!

The RNC are paying for her childrens clothes as well as Lady Sarah, probably her husbands, too. Also all the trips with her and hotel bills. And did you see the video of her entourage coming into some town with people holding hands and trying to break up the parade? She had more cars then the Queen of England had when I watched in a welcoming parade back in NJ. some years back. She knows how to play the power game very well, must have started back in the beauty queen days.

Why didn’t they poll black literalists regarding a ‘white’ candidate? Obama is bi-racial anyway. Literalists that read what the Bible literally says know that there is only one race – human. Such a loaded poll question to such a select group got exactly the numbers the takers wanted… manipulating polls to ‘prove’ a group is racist, bigoted and unenlightened is really what the purpose was. True Christians that have been transformed by the Holy Spirit have nothing to fear from men, black, white, red or yellow.

True rob, but some only think they have been transformed by the Holy Spirit, and what about all the rest of the racists who don’t think they need to be transformed by anyone? The best voter is one that can think and read and comprehend. Polls never have the last word.

pagan “wasn’t slavery condoned by the bible?”
No it is and was created and condoned by man and a well establish practice when the Bible was written. The Bible did give instructions and good advise to slaves concerning slavery but it does not condone it. Man uses it as an excuse to enslave and some as an excuse to attack Christians.
