Jehovah’s Witnesses Win More Than $1 Million in Lawsuit

posted by nsymmonds | 8:35pm Tuesday August 4, 2009

(RNS) Two Jehovah’s Witnesses received more than $1.3 million in a religious discrimination lawsuit against AT&T, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced on Friday (July 31).
Jose Gonzalez and Glenn Owen, former AT&T customer service technicians, lost their jobs after attending a Jehovah’s Witness Convention in July 2005. The men had submitted several written requests to miss work for the July 15-17, 2005 convention, but their supervisor denied the requests, said EEOC regional attorney Faye Williams. When the men failed to report to work July 15, they were suspended and subsequently fired.
In a 2007 trial, a jury awarded the former AT&T employees $296,000 in back pay and $460,000 in compensatory damages. AT&T appealed the jury verdict to the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, but the verdict was upheld, and the amount awarded grew to $1,307,597 to include interest and front pay, according to a July 31 EEOC news release.
“We have a long-standing practice of inclusiveness in the workplace.
We consider this action — which is the result of discussions among the parties — to bring this matter to a close,” AT&T spokesman Marty Richter said of the resolution.
AT&T’s Web site states that, “AT&T employees are protected from unlawful discrimination and harassment on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, marital status, citizenship status, creed, military status, veteran status, disability or any other protected characteristic.”

Looks like AT&T blew that one. Now they will pay for it. Wonder if the supervisor is still working for the company because by refusing the time off requests, he has cost AT&T money. No sympathy for AT&T with the money payout, but if they indeed don’t discrimiate, it wasn’t shown by the supervisor who refused the requests. Also wonder if it was proven that he refused the time off because of their religion or if he had what he thought was a legimate reason or he was just being a pain in the butt.

I am surprised at AT&T’s decision to fight this. It would appear it was a local supervisors decision.. It should have been nipped in the bud at the beginning.. A very Costly Saga.
My experiences have been nothing but complementary for my previous long term employer.. I simply placed requests for time off in advance and never ever had a hassle..

I worked there at that time. They went union and you could be absent only so many times, period. So, if the employees in question already missed two days for the year, those days would have been the end. I just about lost my job when I had to miss the day after July 4 to take my mother to the emergency for breaking her arm. It took walking into the director’s office and staring for them to back down.
Hopefully, they have become more human …

The leaders of this religion care about only one thing in instances of child molestation, and that is maintaining the white-washed appearance of the religion. For this reason, every settlement with victims of child abuse have required the victim to sign a gag order as documented by NBC.

This article never said why they were denied the time off. If it was due them as part of their agreement – and it was their choice to use the time for this purpose – then the company is at fault. But if they wanted extra time I do not think the company is required to give it. Religion is right but it does not also grant privileges that others do not get.

Yes, the religion aspect should have nothing to do with this. If they were due the time off they should have gotten it no matter what the reason and if they were not due the time off and took it anyway for a non-emergency reason they should take whatever penalty anyone else would have had.
And I hope the Commission treated it without consideration of religion.

Truely this is a high control group that needs to be investigated before commiting to. Be aware that as you start studying with them they will tell you that your family will be against you. Why wouldn’t they be against this high control group? They care about you not some religion that is run by a dozen or more old men in New York state.

Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that their organization is the only true Christian organization.
They believe that the truths of scripture were lost through a great apostasy centuries ago until God used Charles Russell to restore the gospel.
JW shares some doctrinal beliefs with Christianity, but most of their beliefs either completely contradict, or at least pervert Biblical truths.
Theologically,Jehovah’s Witnesses are a cult of Christianity. The oppressive organization does not represent historical, Biblical Christianity in any way.
Sociologically, it is a destructive cult whose false teachings frequently result in spiritual and psychological abuse,as well as needless deaths.

Ok, here’s one list I found by Googling of the twelve largest religious groupings:
Baha’I (7 million adherents)
Buddhism (360 million)
Christianity (2 billion)
Confucianism (6 million)
Hinduism (900 million)
Islam (1.3 billion)
Jainism (4 million)
Judaism (14 million)
Shinto (4 million)
Sikhism (23 million)
Daoism (2.7 million)
Zoroastrianism (150,000)
Not to mention the smaller groupings (estimated there at 4,200 in all). And of course many or all of these major groupings have lots of subgroups, some of which think the other is a false religion. So good luck in finding the “right” religion, even if there were one.
Far better, I think, to not worry about being in a religion but rather worry whether you are living in such a way as to help other people and perhaps animals, not hurt them.

Jehovah’s Witnesses believe they have found something that has benefited them and want to share it. Jesus Christ had something good, but the religion and politics of his day thought him to be incorrect. If there had been an internet in that time, would the bloggers and “experts” have verbally assasinated him? There was just a small minority that could see through the politco/religious propaganda and see the truth in what he had to teach. Every person owes it to themselves to examine the real evidence sans propaganda and see the truth for the good news that it is.

And what is so bad about Pagans? We are older than Christianity, thus making Christianity a rather young belief. Just because you don’t agree with JW’s or Scientology doesn’t mean that for those who practice those beliefs that they are wrong. I don’t happen to agree with them, but they must be filling a need for someone or they wouldn’t still exist. The importance or “rightness” of any belief is in the minds of those who follow them….and IMO there is absolutely NO RIGHT RELIGION. Lack of a religion is just as “right”. Everyone has a right to believe or not in some divine being…the problem comes when those folks with their certainity of a god, think it is their duty to Push their “rightness” on someone else…who really doesn’t care to listen.

Jehovah’s Witnesses have steadfastly proclaimed the Kingdom of God as being the only hope that people have. Ps 37:9, 10 Matt 5:5 and many other scriptures describe the earth as being transformed into the paradise that it started out as. Because of this, many have been imprisoned or executed throughout the world. (see the Holocaust Museum website). In 1870 the small group of Bible Students, after studying carefully the 4th chapter of Daniel and Jesus statements in Matt 24-25, where he answered the questions “what will be the sign of your presence and the conclusion of this system”, began to write and teach that the fall of 1914 would begin that “time of the end” that Jesus spoke of. If anyone will open mindedly look at the evidence, they will see that the entire world social system was altered dramatically and permanently since that time. In spite of the internet experts out there and the anti-witness groups, the good news is still there. God will intervene and stop the destruction of the planet and the people that live on it.

All ministers of Jehovah’s Witnesses do NOT get paid for givng talks at the hall or assemblies, or for being ministers. and all of the people at the WTBS are volunteers. No one gets paid. The Bible says, “You recieved free, then give free”, and that’s what we do. We, also, do not get paid to go door to door. Any donations that we get go towards the building of new halls, the upkeep of the halls, and the producing of our literature. We have a monthly report at the Hall as to how much our personal hall has saved and what’s its going to go towards. I just read an article online about a month ago that said a church here in my city gets roughly $7,000 a week in donations. One only needs to see the inside of the church and where the priest lives and what he owns to know where all that money is going. On the other hand, all of our ministers have full time jobs, in a secular work, and he pays for all of his own stuff. Housing, food, taxes, etc. Not one penny of donations goes to him personally in any way. Anyone is welcome to come to the Kingdom Hall and see what it looks like inside to see that we do NOT exploit. They are all modest halls.
Our purpose in preaching is one thing only. To help people to see that we have a God who DOES care about us and he has promised thatsoon in the future he will give us back what we lost due to Adam and Eve sinning. Paradise earth with life everlasting. 2Pet 3:13, Rev. 21: 3,4.
PS US law states that we have the right to practice our religion in whatever way we have to. If that includes attending conventions, then we have the right to do that and be accomodated at the workplace

So it’s no surprise that Jehovah’s Witnesses are hated and spoken against.

They are a cult. They profess to talk about the Bible but they will not discuss that they believe that Jesus is the re-incarnation of Michael the Arc Angel, not part of the Trinity. That is how they got in trouble when Michael Jackson became a member, they thought that MJ was Jesus.
They don’t want to talk about them believing that only 140,000(I THINK THEY ARE CLAIMING A DIFFERENT AMOUNT NOW) will get to go to heaven and the rest of humanity will just die and rot in their graves!
They are taught, if they bother someone at their door and they get angry, The J.W.’s are confronting the Devil and that is a good thing.
They won’t discuss that their religion is a new one dating back to ONLY the 20th century. They also don’t discuss that their Prophets have told them that the world will come to an end numerous times since the cult started, and it hasn’t yet.
I could go on and on. They WILL NOT LEAVE YOU ALONE. They ignore “no soliciting” signs. If you tell them to not come back, they IGNORE that too.
THIS IS A CULT PEOPLE. The majority of men that join are brought into their temple by the women.
They are dishonest: I had a neighbor that stole my lawn mower and when I confronted him, he told me that he was a JW and he was just “BORROWING FROM EGYPT”.
