(RNS) Tens of thousands of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people and their allies rallied at the foot of the U.S.
Capitol on Sunday (Oct. 11) to push for federal recognition of same-sex marriage.
Rainbow-colored outfits and flags adorned many marchers, who held signs calling for equality, an end to bigotry and “segreGAYtion.”
After starting outside the White House, the throngs of marchers cheered outside the Capitol as lawmakers, activists and entertainers called for immediate action to legalize, or at least recognize, same-sex marriages.
Veteran gay rights activist David Mixner, who first called for the march earlier this year, said the fight for civil rights equality has simply taken too long.
“We are looking at gay apartheid,” said Mixner. “There’s one set of laws for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, and one for everyone else. Oh no, you don’t!”
Lt. Dan Choi, a West Point graduate who was discharged under the Pentagon’s Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy, said the fight would be worthwhile, no longer how much time or effort it took. “I’ve fought for many things,” he said, “… love conquers all, love is worth it.”
Other speakers included “Sex and the City” actress Cynthia Nixon, pop singer Lady GaGa and Judy Shepard, whose son, Matthew, was killed 11 years ago in perhaps the nation’s most notorious anti-gay hate crime.
Many of the speeches focused on an emerging gay youth movement that will soon assume leadership from older activists who cut their teeth on the Stonewall riots 40 years ago and, later, in the fight against AIDS.
Student activist Ayanna Ford said it’s easy to have safety in numbers when thousands of people converge on the National Mall. “How will you act alone when you are left with the company of your own conscience?” she asked.
Religious leaders, led by the Rev. Troy Perry, who founded the predominantly gay Metropolitan Community Churches in 1968, offered a benediction at the start of the rally.
The rally was the culmination of many events held by diverse organizations throughout the weekend, including a Jewish queer-themed celebration of the holiday Simchat Torah, and a workshop on how churches could best support the same-sex marriage movement.
At Washington’s All Souls Church, the Rev. Peter Morales, president of the Unitarian Universalist Association, preached to a crowd of more than 300 on the UUA’s “Standing on the Side of Love” pro-gay campaign.
“When we are connected with each other,” he said, “we are one with God.”
The weekend of events, including President Obama’s rousing speech Saturday night to the pro-gay Human Rights Campaign, drew the ire of religious conservatives.
Obama said he would sign a “hate crimes” bill that add sexual orientation to a federal list of protected classes, repeal a 1996 law that keeps the federal government from recognizing same-sex unions, and allow gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military.
“President Obama tried to hide his pro-homosexual agenda during the presidential campaign,” said Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council. “With the election behind him and a liberal Congress beside him, he is now positioned to move forward an agenda with the ultimate goal of redefining marriage at the expense of religious liberty.”

Conservative religious leaders are upset by President Obama’s speech.
What a shame. Guess they’d best keep praying.

This article left out keynote speaker, Julian Bond, chairman of NAACP, who firmly linked the gay rights struggle to the Civil Rights movement. He said, “Black people of all people should not oppose equality, and that is what marriage is all about,”. “We have a lot of real and serious problems in this country, and same-sex marriage is not one of them. Good things don’t come to those who wait, but they come to those who agitate”, he also said.
This was my favorite!!

Boy what a load of crap only goes to show some people will swallow anything. When it comes to comparing homosexuality and apartheid it only goes to show to what depths people will sink. They parade the Matthew Shepard card out to qualify empty comparisons to mass murder. A couple of weeks after the Shepard murder a man was raped and murdered by obviously homosexual offenders and it barely made a blimp on the news. Using Shepard in such a way really is rolling all of their desperation on the back of one homosexual man. How does a people give special rights to bisexuals without reversing the one man one woman notion of marriage after all polygamy has just as much right to be recognized along with any other version of marriage one might think of.

“We have a lot of real and serious problems in this country, and same-sex marriage is not one of them.”
That is so, so true. But hatred and bigotry over same-sex marriage are among our problems. But hatred and bigotry have always been among humans’ problems and as time passes there is less and less of it. In time this, too, will pass.
cknuck you are sounding more and more desperate as time goes by.
posted October 12, 2009 at 10:22 pm
nnmns the only thing I’m desperate over is to get to the gym. Disagreement with what is marriage and what is not is not bigotry or hatred I’ve seen both of those and this is not it. But if you over state then people become ready to settle nice tactic but it has nothing to do with the truth.
posted October 12, 2009 at 10:26 pm
cknuck, how would you define apartheid if not the segration in society of one group from another? Conservatives may wine about a “redefinition” of marriage all they want but it doesn’t take away from the fact that the LGBT community is denied hundreds of protections and rights daily.
As for your murder case involving sodomy, why are the murderers clearly homosexual? You seem to confuse human tendencies for cruelty and sadism for a sexual orientation that has nothing to do with the former. Plenty of heterosexual men have engaged in same-sex acts but unless their motivation is one of physical attraction then they are not gay. Their motivation was no doubt the motivation of all rape: domination. Rape is not a crime of passion but a crime of violence. I find it offensive that you would condemn an entire group of people for a single crime not committed due to sexual orientation.
posted October 12, 2009 at 10:46 pm
chal of course homosexuals never commit crimes that’s always those pesky heterosexuals. Where you in South Africa to witness apartheid? There is no restrooms or parts of town that are designated for homosexuals no mass murders no beatings nor real estate denied. Homosexuals live well here in America just as we all do you could not compare life here to that life and if you do you do that whole experience an injustice. Why not compare homosexual life here in America to the holocaust? I’ll tell you why, it is a lie.
posted October 12, 2009 at 10:47 pm
cknuck, don’t act like you care for second about what happened to Matthew Shepard. We’re not that stupid.
“Using Shepard in such a way really is rolling all of their desperation on the back of one homosexual man.”
Yes, because only one gay person has ever been murdered.
posted October 12, 2009 at 11:25 pm
What’s missing in this whole diatribe of Ck is EQUALITY. Didn’t you read what the keynote speaker, and the Chairman of NAACP said? EQUALITY, EQUALITY, EQUALITY=Freedom for All in America. We shouldn’t be seperating one group from another here in America in 2009. Our Constitution garantees us equality, and every law in every state should be the same for the GLBT, as it finally is for African-Americans.

cknuck won’t ever admit that gay people have a point. It goes against the “Marriage Rights For My Oppressed People (Miscegenists); No Marriage Rights For Your Oppressed People (Dirty Homos)” schtick he’s been trotting out for years.
posted October 12, 2009 at 11:39 pm
H22 I did not read that, but even if I did I would disagree same sex does not seem to me the same as marriage traditionally one man one woman. I know some states honor it but according to my beliefs there is no such thing and it is not designed that way by my God.
YN I don’t even agree that homosexuality is gay or a oppressed people.

OK, can Tony Perkins make any statements without the word “agenda” buried in them? “Me thinks he doeth protest too much!” (Is that a hidden agenda in your pocket, Tony, or are you simply glad to argue with me?)
ck
You are simply a latter day Pharisee. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it’s not simply good. Pharisees were concerned with purity and Law. Jesus tried over and over to get them to understand that purity is a theological cul-de-sac (a very lovely dead end) and the Law is outmoded (and fell apart when the Temple did). The good news is he never gave up on them – as he seems to with the Sadducees and the Priests. In that spirit, many of us will not give up on you.
It seems like you get the basic idea, it is the particulars that weigh you down. God loves everyone and desires a deeper relationship with us as we were created to be. That this creation does not conform to human (or inhumane) standards is not God’s problem, it’s ours. So we simply need to encourage each other to seek love at it’s greatest expression. As we do this there will be a lightening (but not lightning) of our cultural load.
posted October 13, 2009 at 11:55 am
‘Dear’ ck,
Thank you SOOO much for prefacing your first post with “What a load of crap”. It told us what to expect when we read the rest of it, and it was exactly what we got – a load of crap. Thanx for at least being honest this time.
posted October 13, 2009 at 1:16 pm
ck,
“I did not read that”
That figures! So willfully min-/un-informed.
“I would disagree same sex [marriage] does not seem to me the same as [heterosexual] marriage”
They aren’t the “same” – but they are (or at least should be) EQUAL (as H22 reminded you and you ‘forgot’ to read) before the law. That is the whole point of the Constitutio.
“I know some states honor it but according to my beliefs there is no such thing and it is not designed that way by my God.”
Once again, as many of us have told you repeatedly over the years, you are welcome to your beliefs. What you refuse to do is to acknowledge that in a country with freedom of religion, other people should be equally (you sure seem to have a problem with that word, don’t you?) entitled to their beliefs. There are myriad faiths in America that do recognize SSMs and they are “designed that way by [our] God”.
“I don’t even agree that homosexuality is gay or a oppressed people.”
Well, that’s just pure unmitigated ingnorance which is, at least, better than outright bigotry. Ignorance can be cured – through education. Bigotry goes right thru to the bone.

husband quote, “Well, that’s just pure unmitigated ingnorance which is, at least, better than outright bigotry. Ignorance can be cured – through education. Bigotry goes right thru to the bone.
Well isn’t that just special. It still done not change what I feel about homosexuality it is a sin period. I cannot be bullied into believing that sin is not sin. jest thank you so much for your insight on Jesus; do you even believe in Him? Don’t like the word agenda? Or do you not want to admit to it? Not only are there agendas but there are also tactics, all for the purpose of changing marriage and devaluing it even further than it is already. nnmns you have advice on how to make the world better other than homosexuality?
posted October 13, 2009 at 6:43 pm
Sure. Eliminate as much bigotry as you can. Oh, and if you read better you’d realize I don’t advocate homosexuality (pretty easy to tell that, really) but I do advocate tolerance whenever possible. Letting homosexuals won’t hurt your marriage or mine but it will make life easier for some folks who arent’ hurting anyone.
What seems to stop you from going along with that is your belief in a particular version of a creature for which there’s no proof. What really stops you from doing that seems likely to be bigotry.
And anyway advocating for something people are either born with or they are not would be silly. Advocating for the rights of those born with it is a humane choice.
posted October 13, 2009 at 8:18 pm
nnmns you couldn’t for the life of you define the origin of homosexuality, if a person is born with it or not is not provable.

And if you were right that it’s not provable whether people were born with it or not it would be pretty clear bigotry to take the benefit of the doubt away from them and deny them rights they need.
But happily research is being done and evidence for a genetic link is piling up.
So in fact you are the one on the defensive here cknuck, in a variety of ways. But you’re used to that.

” It still done not change what I feel about homosexuality it is a sin period.”
Good thing laws aren’t made based on what you “feel”, ck. Nor, for that matter, on your particular sect’s interpretation of what “sin” is.

nnmns what’s up with these links not one of them prove anything there is no known isolated homosexual gene, none. And don’t think huge amounts of money have not been spent to find it, but no so. It is not a matter of denying rights as much a matter of changing the way people think of marriage be accurate. Some people think that because a man gets his penis cut off and injects himself full of hormone drugs I should call him a woman or a lady even. I disagree, they also would have me to believe that a man and a man can be husband and wife I disagree with this notion also. So what now you think you can insult me into changing my mind, sorry it is a foolish endeavor. You people have got to be kidding.

“there is no known isolated homosexual gene” True, to my knowledge, but so what? That would not mean homosexuality is not genetic. And it could also be a combination of genetics and the environment of say the fetus or the baby or the kid perhaps that leads to the body making the person naturally homosexual.
But don’t kid yourself that I think I can change your mind. You’ve demonstrated it’s stuck on a few ideas. I just don’t want anyone else who might be reading this to be fooled by you. But this is an old article and I’m going now.

nnmns quote, ” “there is no known isolated homosexual gene” True, to my knowledge, but so what?”
In other words let’s ignore the truth.

Wow…it takes 8 clueless liberal know-nothings to attack one person who knows what he is talking about (cknuck). Well Obama hasn’t failed to disappoint. He’s exactly the kind of crappy President I thought we were going to get. Luckily, his time is running out. Once we get to the 2010 mid-term elections, the POTUS will find it a much more difficult undertaking to get his immorality passed through Congress.

YN….problem? Guess “W” was good? That would be “NO”. His mess is what President Obama is having to clean up. Guess the voters didn’t do as you wanted. Fortunately.
