KATHMANDU, Nepal (RNS/ENI) Once the only Hindu kingdom in the world, Nepal was declared a secular state by its parliament in 2006 and the monarchy was abolished two years later.
Now, with a new constitution due in May, Hindu groups are pressuring the government to reinstate Hinduism as the state religion.
Kalidas Dahal, a Hindu who claims to have supernatural powers, recently launched a nine-day prayer meeting — including a visit by the deposed king — aimed at showing the coalition government that Hinduism continues to enjoy public support.
Dahal’s demand is backed by the Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal, the only party in parliament that supports the monarchy and Hinduism; the party holds just four of the 601 seats in parliament.
The pro-Hindu party has paralyzed the Nepalese capital with strike and a blockade of the prime minister’s office and other ministries. It has warned of more protests unless its demands are met.
“We want a referendum before the new constitution is promulgated on May 28,” said RPP-Nepal chief Kamal Thapa. “The people should be allowed to decide if monarchy and Hinduism should return.”
Thapa, who was home affairs minister under the deposed king, said his party sponsored a petition for a citizens referendum that was signed by more than 2 million of Nepal’s 27 million citizens.
In a nation where nearly 75 percent of the people are Hindus, Thapa says Hinduism is needed to preserve Nepal’s cultural identity. “If the new constitution is enforced without the referendum, people will not obey it and there will be no peace,” Thapa warned.

All the founding fathers of Nepal were Rg Veda believing Hindus. Their money says, “In Laxshmi We Trust.” Their pledge of allegiance clearly states, “…one nation, under Vishnu….” What further proof do these gods-less, secular-humanist, liberals now in power need?
Give me monarchy or give me death (and re-incarnation)!

YN, thanks for clearing that up.
Clearly the Hindus of Nepal have more claim than the Christians of America, but it would surely be as bad an idea to make Nepal a Hindu nation as to make America a Christian nation. And that would be a very bad idea.

Dear editor,
We Nepalese people support the Hindu dedication of Kali Baba.Nepal is the pious Hindu country in the lapse of the Himalayas, which is beautiful, quiet, the birth place of Buddha and origin of Hinduism. Besides being the country of Everest it is equally popular with its diverse cultural values. This is the land where civilization began and is also known as the country of ‘SANGRILA.’ Nepal is as holy place to Hindus & Buddhists, as Mecca for Muslims and Jerusalem to Jews and Christians.
Hinduism is the most liberal and tolerant of religions. How can the oldest and most liberal of religions be thrown away just like that? No religion (and certainly not Hinduism & Buddhism) should be made a political issue. Because of this unique heritage and culture, Nepal has been contributing an ingenuity of resolving its conflicts and differences. Why the culprit leaders of (Congress,UML & Maoists) party didn’t try to understand the sentiments of the people? It is the main duty for all the leaders to care the basic norms and values of the nation. But, by declaring Nepal a secular state & republic, the visionless party leaders have done just that: tried to put together the unmixable, which could be dangerous for the stabilized Nepali society. No one has right to trample believe and conviction of the people rights. A prominent editor of Peoples Review Pushpa Raj Pradhan writes- ‘During the Indra Jatra festival ,the Newar community was agitated when they were faced with the budget cut for marking the festival. The Maoist leaders are seen reluctant in preserving our own identity.’
So, we should have to think independently and have to come to our own conclusion. Nepalese nationalism has evolved and been consolidated more through social and cultural exchanges than conflicts. Nepalese monarchy has been offering balance role among the miscellaneous communities, castes and religions. So, to keep intact our sovereignty, indigenous cultural assets there should have to reinstate our monarchy.
THank you.

How did the leaders that wanted a secular state and a republic take the Nepal Monarch off his throne? If 75% of the country is Hindu and Buddhist, how did this happen? I remember the King that was educated, I believe, in the U.S. who married a beautiful American lady and made her his Queen. What happened to them, Dirgh Raj Prasai?

Thanks for the info nnmns. I looked for Sikkim in the article, as I recognized the name being the King’s I spoke about. I googled King & Queen of Sikkim and if you’re interested in a love story it’s worth looking it up. Hope Cooke met the son of the King of Sikkim in a hotel lobby in Deerjeeling (sp.) She was the Christian grandaughter of Winchester Noyes, a shipping magnate, and legal guardian. They fell in love, she was 23 and he was a widower of 40 with two children. Life magazine did a big spread of them, maybe more than one, in 1961-to the 70′s. Beautiful couple. The story shows where India took them over, despite everything they did together.

Please, read once more:
The Nepalese Maoist and many Left leaders are obsessed and gripped with the idea of making Nepal a republic state. How could they establish sovereignty just by removing monarchy without any logical and rationale reasons? This would only be a ‘Herculean Attempt’ without any logic and even absurd. History is proof that the kings of Nepal have never acted against the country’s sovereignty. In Nepal opposing monarchy is as easy as it is difficult to support. But those who are true nationalists cannot speak or act by forgetting the ground reality of the country because monarchy in Nepal is related to the country’s unity and independence. If there was no monarchy in Nepal and there was no China on the north, Nepal would not have remained as an independent country.
In Afghanistan, after the Kingship was abolished in 1973, hundreds of thousand people were killed in the war and conflict between the communists supported by the then Soviet Union and the Mujaheddin supported by America. Hundreds of thousand others had to take refuge in Pakistan and Iran. Afghanistan virtually disintegrated because of war and foreign power play. After the Russia-supported Najibullah was hanged the Talibans came to power and since then Afghanistan is beleaguered by war, conflict and struggle.
In Cambodia also, in the name of abolishing the Kingship, the Khmer Rouge led by Pol Pot killed millions of people. Thus, the plot for republic could be a trap to finish off Nepal because even if it remains as a country, this country may become like North and South Vietnam when there is election for the president. Will America remain quiet by allowing a communist to become a president in Nepal? If there is a real possibility of the spill of streams of blood why should we think about if it will do something good for the country? Why should an innocent country like ours become the tug of war of big powers? But the country’s nationalism has reached to a point, which is virtually impossible to reverse. There are forces that are looking for this moment. Therefore, in such a critical hour, especially the Maoist must not link Nepal’s nationalism with international communist ideology and their movement.
At this time, Girija Prasad Koirala who had to bear the brunt during the direct rule of the king had tried to prove the rationality of monarchy in Nepal and this has made him the focal point of Nepal’s political discussion. But his leadership will be recognized only if his thinking becomes his party’s ideology. Nepalese politics has become tainted by the practice of going for monarchy when one is in power and opposing it when one is out of power. The CPN-UML has put a serious stake to its political future by betting on politics for position. But to bargain for nationality with foreigners for post and money is nothing but to compare oneself with the Quislings like Jay Chand and Lendup Dorje.
Therefore, the Maoists and all other parties must be able to respect the people’s wishes on a sensitive issue like monarchy and become clear about status duties and responsibilities of the head of the state. Nepal is the home of all Nepalese including the King and every one of us must be equally concerned about how this country could maintain its independent existence and identity.
Among all religions of the world, Hindu religion is considered as an ancient religion that is recognized as the foundation of civilization and as the most liberal democratic way of life. Hinduism & Buddhism are the identities & cultural assets of Nepal. The Lord Pashupathinath, Shoyambhunath, Lumbini, Barahachetra, Gosaikunda, Muktinath, Ridi, Janakidham, Devghat of Nepal, Kailash Mansharobar of Tibet (well accessed for Nepalese and Hindus), and Tirupati, Rameshroram, Jagannath, Badrinath, Amarnath of India are the symbolic shrines of Hinduism & Buddhism. The people of Nepal and India always have cordial relations due to the cultural and religious resemblance. They should know that if instability persists in Nepal, it could be a bastion of terrorism posing a threat to the whole world. When present India (Hindustan) was not in existence, there were more than 25 nations, 250 years ago, the great King Prithvi Narayan Shah expressed –”Nepal is true Hindustan”
If we want to know the greatness of Hinduism, we can see The Great Wall of China, “the seventh wonders of the world” has a fourteen feet long Sanskrit incantation engraved on the western gate. Mongolian emperor Kublai Khan had written ‘OM Namo! Bhagawati’ including others in the 14th century. The Chinese Great Wall has many syllables from ‘Mahabharata’ written on the doors in Sanskrit language. It is not a common thing that the language was written in Kalipinya letters.
So, Hinduism is the foundation of civilization. We are 85% Hindus and including Buddhists we are 95% in Nepal. In India, an estimated 930 million of its population are followers of Hinduism. The Hindu Philosophy preaches that all the people of the world are our friends. Fraternity & honesty always has been propounded by Hindus. However, the Racism and social discriminations are the great hindrances of Hindus. Of course it needs to be corrected. If we respect each other, our problems will be mitigated gradually. So, we request to all party leaders and every nationals not to minimize the reality of Hinduism and Buddhism, the basis of world civilization.
Thank you.
