Tiny Shard Bears Oldest Script Found in Jerusalem

posted by aroan | 5:06pm Monday July 12, 2010

Associated Press – July 12, 2010
JERUSALEM – Archaeologists say a newly discovered clay fragment from the 14th century B.C. is the oldest example of writing ever found in antiquity-rich Jerusalem.
Dig director Eilat Mazar of Hebrew University says the 2-centimeter (0.8-inch) long fragment bears an ancient form of writing known as Akkadian wedge script.
The fragment includes a partial text including the words “you,” “them,” and “later.”
It predates the next-oldest example of writing found in Jerusalem by 600 years, and dates roughly four centuries before the Bible says King David ruled a Jewish kingdom from the city.
Mazar said Monday that the fragment likely came from a royal court and suggested more could be found in the most ancient part of Jerusalem, located in the city’s predominantly Palestinian eastern sector.

Hey cknuck, you didn’t proof read what you said, did you? Because if you did, then you would have noticed that you’re wording doesn’t make since. It’s (have it, not has it.) That does not sound right, don’t you agree? I do not mean any disrespect, or to ruffle any feathers, I just thought I would bring it to you’re attention, and point that out to you. If I have upset you I am sorry, that was not my intention, please forgive me. Take care,
Sincerely,
DeeAnne67

DeeAnne, a hint: “you’re” is the contraction for “you are”; your is the possessive. Normally I wouldn’t mention it but since you’re correcting grammar I’m sure you want your grammar to be up to snuff.
Apostrophes are hell.

no problem DeeAnn67 I often make mistakes sometimes I’m in meetings or between meetings doing this sort of thing (I hope the vp is not reading this) and I make mistakes. But I do wonder why would the Hebrew Museum “have” it and not the Palestinian people? Just a question no need for any hostilities (not you DeeAnn you were quite nice in your critique although you did accuse me of not making “since”)

“palestian sector belongs to the hebrews”
Whoa, there’s an aggressive claim. They haven’t stolen it all yet.

Akkadian wedge script seems to indicate to me (although I very well could be wrong) that it is not Hebrew in historical content and I suspect both peoples came from the same source so why not share the find since is was found in the Palestinian sector? I think that it would go a long way in moving toward equality that’s all.

cknuck, I think that is a good suggestion. The point is about equality.
