New York’s state’s Catholic bishops continue to blast the state’s passage of homosexual marriage this week, with one bishop calling on Catholic schools and other institutions to shun lawmakers in protest of the vote.
In an op-ed Sunday in the New York Daily News, Nicholas DiMarzio, bishop of Brooklyn, called on members of his diocese to “not to bestow or accept honors, nor to extend a platform of any kind to any state elected official, in all our parishes and churches for the foreseeable future,” a statement that may signal a new era in church-state relations in the Empire State.
Catholic bishops have previously fought high-profile battles with public officials who endorse policy positions contrary to official church teaching. The previous battleground was mostly limited to debates over the right to life, which is seen within Catholicism as a primary, inviolable value. (Catholics, the church teaches, may not vote for pro-choice politicians except for ‘grave reasons.’) But it is new that church leaders such as DiMarzio would include legislation on gay rights as sufficient cause to ostracize politicians.

This is a Middle School Lunchroom response to an adult issue. I recognize the value of “if you can’t say anything nice, say nothing”. But there comes a point when responsible adults realize there is more to life than single issues. Shunning is one of the last responses left to someone whose creativity has run out. Job did not shun God or those who thought they would advise him in matters of faith. God did not shun Job, though he never really answered Job’s specific prayer requests. I would expect a more responsible and mature approach from a Bishop.

Guess they are adopting the Amish method of punishment for not obeying the Church and IMO is very childish—a form of “the silent treatment” for it’s members who don’t do as they are told!

Most Americans did not want Obamacare, yet the Democrats insisted on shoving it down our throats. When the people finally got to vote the Dems paid heavily at the polls.
Here in NY most voters did not want SSM, yet the Democrats – assisted by Republicans who went back on pledges they made in order to get elected – insisted on shoving it down our throats. When we do get to go to the polls many of those politicians are also going to pay the price.

Mike: How is same-sex marriage hurting you? It isn’t. If you don’t like it, don’t have one. Or if you really want to be a warrior for “family values,” why don’t you start paying attention to heterosexuals who engage in adultery, serial marriage, spousal and child abuse, etc. That should keep you busy enought to forget all about us gay folk.
