“Occupy London” forces St. Paul’s Cathedral to close, first time since WWII blitz

London’s historic St. Paul’s Cathedral, which survived Hitler’s blitz and the assassination of Thomas à Becket, has been forced to close its doors due to the “Occupy London Stock Exchange” protests.

The dean of the cathedral, the Right Reverend Graeme Knowles, is “now publicly regretting the leniency,” he extended to the protesters, reports Charles C.W. Cooke in National Review magazine.

“If Dean Knowles had expected to be afforded the same respect by OLSX that he has become accustomed to from his parishioners, he was sorely mistaken. Since their free pass was issued, the people-in-tents have made it blindingly obvious that they are not merely differently dressed members of the City of London’s laity, but, literally, occupiers intent on holding the fort at all costs,” writes Cooke.

“When the first protesters arrived, the cathedral’s authorities turned the other cheek, accepting the imposition of the protest camp with alacrity. St. Paul’s even took the unusual step of instructing London’s police to leave the protesters where they were.

“As the crowd has grown to 2,000 strong, access to the landmark has been gradually blocked, forcing St. Paul’s to close its doors for the first time since 1940, when German bombs rained indiscriminately down on the city during the Blitz and an unexploded incendiary forced evacuation for a few days while the device was removed.”

“We have done this with a very heavy heart,” the Right Reverend Knowles announced at a press conference, “but it is simply not possible to fulfill our day-to-day obligations to worshippers, visitors, and pilgrims.”

Reluctantly, the dean has now asked the protesters to leave, which they have refused to do, reports the British daily newspaper, the Telegraph. Each day that it is shuttered, St. Paul’s loses $26,000 to $37,000 in tourist revenues, reports Cooke, ”a crippling blow to a glorious 300-year-old building.”

“St. Paul’s cathedral has stood proud, open, and unharmed through twelve monarchs, an abdication crisis, two world wars, repeated terrorist atrocities, the fight over female suffrage and fundamental constitutional change,” notes Cooke. ”During the dark days of the Second World War, it seemed almost preternaturally preserved from harm:

“As bombs dropped all around, destroying everything in sight, its celebrated dome poked imperforate through clouds of smoke, and a famous photograph provided succor to millions of weary Londoners. Since its consecration in 1708, St. Paul’s has been a happy constant in British life. It would be a tragedy if this stellar record of openness and repair were eventually blighted by 2,000 heedless members of a rag-tag mob camped out aimlessly on the streets of the capital.”

How very typical (hypocritical) of a church to complain about the financial losses. The love of money is the root of all evil

People like these are scared of religion, it gives them a meaning in life and instructions how to behave.
#1 Would you rather have the church take your tax money to keep running? If they earn honestly by visitors and donations it is better than public funding. When was the last time you gave charity to your local religious institution?

This Agnostic finds this behavior despicable by the Occupy crowd. They think their rights are superior over other people’s right. They should be ashamed.

this is such a disgrace to the church and to our Lord. Do not what the younger generation thinks they are doing by causing this disruption around the world. They to move either by their own accord or the laws. God bless you and our world.

IT IS A SAD THING WHEN THIS BEAUTIFUL CATHEDRAL IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR TOURISTS TO WITNESS THE INTERIOR BEATY OF THIS PLACE. ONE CORRECTION TO BE NOTED ON THE ARTICLE. ST. PAUL’S CATHEDRAL DID NOT SURVIVE ST. THOMAS BECKETT’S MURDER BECAUSE IT WAS NOT IN EXISTENCE THEN. BECKETT WAS MURDERED IN CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL ABOUT 1073 A.D. ST PAUL’S CATHEDRAL WAS DESIGNED BY CHRISTOPHER WREN IN THE MIDDLE 1600′S AFTER THE GREAT LONDON FIRE. PLEASE RESEARCH YOU ARTICLE.

A dead-beat is a dead-beat….they don’t
contribute to anything but themselves and
somehow think WE owe them something. I’d like
to lock and load on those socialist dead-beats…but I can’t…they have rights. So
what gives them the right to shut down the
rest of us. Our systems is better than their
socialist ideas. Remember…you’re not
entitle to anything you have not earned.

This tells us who these people really are, which are a bunch of selfish, lazy brats. They are people who are ungrateful and want what other people have. They don’t even know what they are mad about they’re just mad. Most of them have not lived or done without. They stand in the way of a Christian’s right to worship and others’ rights all the while thinking they are the only ones who matter, yes, they are selfish and clueless. It is phony indignation and most of them have had too much! SHAME ON THEM!

Wake-up! The whole Occupy movement is a sham orchestrated to use the people like sheep. Go do your homework and use your brains. It’s a health hazard, it’s destroying businesses, they’re cooking without a permit from the health department, they’re defecating in the same area–they’re turning people into animals heading every beck and call.
The Cleric is the only semblance of civilization in this story.

So h appy none of my children or grandchildren have turned out like the protestors. They learned early to work for what they want, and to study hard and do well in school. There are rewards for this.
Why should we who have worked hard give it without their working to others who just want what they want. I will gladly help the needy, but not just the greedy!

I can’t believe the things I’m reading by your ‘followers’. These people, the 99%, are standing up for what you have given away to the rich. You call them lazy, greedy, shameful, dead beats. Wow, have you missed the point. I hope you pull your heads out of your arses sometime soon. This isn’t about religion or making a few bucks off of Jesus and Mary souvenirs. Or maybe we should just let the rich have the rest…right? Get a clue, those against the movement.
