The SUPERmarket Heroes

Last week I saw a young woman get attacked on the street, in what I always thought of as a really safe neighborhood, in broad daylight. As she walked past a supermarket, a man rushed at her and grabbed her waist and at her face. He didn't try to steal her purse or anything or even take her anywhere. It was literally like he just had some split second impulse to grab someone. It made absolutely no sense.
superman.jpgThe woman screamed and immediately three guys from inside the supermarket came rushing out, their price guns clattering to the ground as they tore the guy off of her (the D'Agostino Heroes?) One of them screamed at the man, "You will not touch her again! You will back off from her!" The man who had grabbed her looked like he didn't even know what he had done. He looked so utterly confused, like he had no memory of what just happened. The three guys from the supermarket cornered him against the outside wall of the building while one of them called the police.

Pencil In Some Peace

Okay what do I have to do today? Make breakfast, dry hair, pick out cute but functional outfit, get to work on time, while at work remember everything I need to do for all the students, during prep time do all my work efficiently so I can leave on time, get home and make healthy but quick dinner, do my laundry, write my blog article, write at least one page of my new play, check Facebook, check all three e-mail accounts, check weather forecast, check NY Times, e-mail more contacts about part time jobs, go jogging, call boyfriend, call mom, call dad, call best friend, text friends back about getting dinner on Tuesday, text therapist to reschedule appointment for Thursday instead of Tuesday, research apartments on craigslist, do eyedrops 4 times a day, figure out who to e-mail about my university health insurance, e-mail said health insurance person, make tomorrow's lunch, shower, brush teeth, floss teeth, rinse with mouthwash, take allergy meds, go to sleep.

I must have forgotten something. Oh yeah. Meditate. Pencil that in after the allergy meds.

An Attempt to Communicate Pure Joy

The word "miracle" is maybe too strong. Maybe. But I'm going to use it anyway. It was a freaking miracle. I could not believe what was on the piece of paper.

There it was. Clear as day. The most beautiful thing I'd ever seen. The letters A-L-E-X. All capitals, sloping downwards off the line, sloppy and all running into each other, but still - his name, written by him, right there on the paper.

I picked it up off the desk and showed it to my coworker, my eyes wide and excited. "Do you see this?" I pointed dramatically to the top of the worksheet. "This is the coolest thing I've ever seen!"

What I Did For Love - The 2009 Tony Awards

For many theatre devotees, this past Sunday was the dramatic equivalent of the Superbowl - the Tony Awards. When I was younger I got so excited for the evening and watched it on TV with my family, but in past years my interest has drifted away from the bright lights of Broadway to the dimmer lights that come from smaller theatres in the Village and in Brooklyn. I've been disappointed with the general spirit of Broadway these days - the spectacle shows that are high on the budget but low on the substance. Every time I walk through Times Square I feel a little bit more overwhelmed by the sensory barrage of lights and smells and colors and frantic tourists. Maybe I'm too sensitive, but I'd rather be just about anywhere else.

This year, however, my interest has been rekindled...and no, I'm not obsessed with Billy Elliot, but I do think it's cool that three kids are sharing the award for best leading actor in a musical.

But that's not why I'm back to Broadway, either...

No Smoking in Shangri-La

  • On Monday June 1st, Nebraska banned smoking in most public indoor places, and Japan also banned smoking on limited and express trains on Japan Railway Group.
  • In May, North Carolina and Michigan banned smoking in public places.
  • LA County plans to ban smoking in county parks within the next few months.

Smoking and tobacco sales have been totally illegal in the Buddhist nation of Bhutan since 2004. This factoid completely blows my mind.

About One City: A Buddhist Blog for Everyone

Welcome to One City. You've lived here your whole life, whether you know it or not. One City blog is an outgrowth of The Interdependence Project, a Buddhist-inspired nonprofit organization led by Ethan Nichtern, dedicated to teaching the insights of Buddhism, meditation, mindfulness, and interconnectedness in the 21st century world.

If you're interested in how your mind works, are interested in meditation (but don't want to pretend you live in ancient Asia), care about the world, are into media, love contemporary culture, and above all, really dig the truth of interdependence-that nothing happens in a vacuum--then this blog is for you.
