Dear Our Lady of Weight Loss
~ My sister called and said they were on their way home from the doctor. My niece, Maya, had just gotten shots and was not happy. She was crying real tears. My sister thought a kiss from Aunt Joy might make her feel better.
As I was heading down the stairs to meet them, I thought to myself “I could take her a piece of candy. That would make her feel better. Maybe I have a cracker or something…No, I don’t want to make her think food is the answer or will make her feel better. Just go.”
So I went to the car. She was fussy and didn’t really want to talk to me. Then I thought of the fountains at the courthouse across the street. She loves water. “Maya, do you want to go see the water!?”
I took her from her car-seat. When she saw the water, she screamed “WA!!” Her face lit up, and she started doing this thing with her fingers, like she was snapping them.
At first, she wasn’t sure about the fountain, the water … so I put my hand in and dripped it on her hand a couple of times. Then she wanted to put her hand in. I helped her lay on her belly, and she splashed and got water on her face. She was so excited!!
When I put her back in the car, she started fussing again. But I knew I had taken a step toward doing “I feel bad” differently and had not instilled “food is the answer” into her young 18 month old mind. ~ Love, Joy
Well done! Joy!!!! Food is not the answer!
