Christmas Diet Tip: Eating Slowly Translates to Pounds Lost

posted by Janice Taylor, Editor | 8:19am Friday October 31, 2008

Are you worried that Halloween will turn into a two-month binge?
Are you feeling anxious that the holiday season kick-off is upon us?
Are you concerned that you might gain weight?
Here is One Thing YOU CAN Do Today that will help you gracefully and sveltely move through the holiday season.
Chew Slowly and Savor the Flavor
Research shows that those who slow down while eating and savor the flavor, eat less than those who gulp and stuff.
In a recent study conducted by the University of Rhode Island, scientists found that when eating quickly women consumed 646 calories in approximately nine minutes. When they ate slowly, they averaged 579 calories in 29 minutes!
Get it? They ate 67 calories more in nine minutes than they did in 29 minutes! In addition, those who slowed down and savored the flavor, enjoyed their meal and felt satisfied on multiple levels!
One thing you can do today: Slow Down … Savor the Flavor!
Spread the word … NOT the icing,
Janice

Anyone out there remember the "Manwich?"  In 1969, Hunt's introduced its Manwich Sloppy Joe Sauce and it revolutionized the Sloppy Joe.  It sure was a staple in our kitchen.  My mother, the gourmet, used to break it out on special occasions.   No disrespect meant, Mom.  :) Here's

so true. I just had lunch with my friend. I realized that I eat fast. Always have. She eats slow. I need to lose weight. Always have. She doesn’t. Never has.

need to practice mindfulness in this regard. I inhale food when I am hungry. When I slow down and pace myself, like anyone else, I eat less.

I agree. This is so true. When I eat mindfully, I feel more satisfied. The key is remembering to slow down and savor the food.

I have trouble doing this at dinner when the DH and kids are there. Someone is always distracting me, needing something, fighting with someone. I’ve told the kids that once I sit down I’m not going to get up until I’m done. Dinner at my house is not conducive to relaxation. I must find ways to make it so.

This is something I have been wanting to try, but hunger overrides my intentions. I have started counting to at least 25 before I swallow, so its a start.
