Curiosity: An Antidote to Eating Due to Boredom
For those of us who eat out of boredom (too many of us to count, yes?), it’s time to get curious about our curiosity muscles.
“Curiosity muscle?” you ask. Yes, we all have one to one degree or another. Some more than less and some less than more, but we all possess an ongoing, inherent interest in our outer worlds. From our interest in the people we know (snooping), the weather (will it be a sunny day?); how much is that house selling for around the corner? – to wondering about the state of the world, as well as how many trees are left in the rain forest.
We are curious about our inner worlds. What makes me feel that way? Why am I happy one moment and frustrated the next? What thought triggered me to go to the fridge (again)?- to asking the big existential question: Why is chocolate so much a part of my consciousness?
Wrap Your Curiosity Muscle Around This
Those who are exercising their curiosity muscles are rarely bored, because they are occupied (mentally and sometimes physically) exploring their fascination with new people, new things and new experiences. Therefore, if you have effectively eliminated boredom, you have, in turn, eliminated eating out of boredom!
How will you build your exercise muscle? Get engaged in life!
Spread the word, not the icing!

One way to start to implement change is to send a new message to your unconscious. A strong message, that at the same time not only respects how your unconscious mind has been protecting you but is grateful as well. You might say the following words to your unconscious mind.
“Thank you for protecting me and for your good intentions. I understand that you have been doing what you think is best for me. In fact, in your own way, you have been taking care of me. For this I am eternally grateful. I am not exactly sure how this came to be, but I am certain that you had good reason to protect me in this way.
“Nevertheless, I need for those old reasons, patterns and beliefs to be left in the past, where they belong. I now need to formulate a new pattern for my present and future. Please, help me to move forward, while leaving the past safely in the past – where it belongs. The responsibilities of these old behaviors are now finished.”
Find a way to repeat the above message as often as possible. Or, better yet – write your own message to yourself that deeply resonates.
Here’s one-way to write your own self-hypnosis script.
Ask yourself the following questions and use your answers to fill in the blanks in the script to follow.
What is your unconscious mind protecting you from?
How has your unconscious mind been taking care of you?
What are your belief systems? Are they no longer useful?
How might you move forward, while leaving the past safely in the past?

“Unconscious mind, thank you for protecting me from ____________. I appreciate that you have been taking care of me by _______________. The old belief system(s), _____________, while useful in the past, is no longer necessary. Please help me to move forward by ___________________. Thank you for helping me to leave the past in the past, where it belongs, for keeping me safe.”
You might want to record it so that you can ‘hear yourself’ saying these words of thanks and encouragement. This is a form of self-hypnosis. This is a way that you can reach in and change your own mind – change your circuitry. The power is within you.
Did you have any a-Ha moments when answering the questions? Let me know how it goes and what your self-hypnosis message to self looks like!

Thank you, again and again, OLWL. Yet again you have hit the nail on its head. There are indeed too many of us boredom eaters to count. I am reminded (again!) of my hobby (rubber stamping) that keeps me from mindless munching. Learning new techniques to use while stamping is a terrific and fun way to exercise my curiosity muscle. The hypnotism is a great way to keep me from munching, and to remind me of the things I want to create with my stamps. You are the BEST!
