Make It or Break It: Why are you keeping your fat clothes?

Eight years ago, when the Scales of Injustice (in this case the Scales of Justice) reflected that I had miraculously lost 50 pounds, I celebrated by ripping through my closet, pulling out and tearing down all my fat clothes and sorting them into three piles.

While I was doing the happy shimmy, the phone rang. "Hellooooo," I sang.
It was my mother-in-law. "Hi! You sound happy. What are you doing?"
"I'm getting rid of my fat clothes! I'm bundling them up and taking them to Goodwill!" I replied.
"You are? Why are you giving away your fat clothes? What will you do when you gain the weight back?"

Before you get angry at my mother-in-law, she truly meant no harm. Losing it and gaining it was her experience of not just me, but of herself and numerous friends who had gone the 'lose it - find it' route.

"Precisely! I am not going to gain it back this time. We're talking permanent fat removal, and it is gone for good. I am going to make it and nothing is going to break it!"

Actually, I felt more inspired than ever to live up to those words. I am going to make it and nothing is going to get in my way, weigh me down, or break my resolve. I returned to my shimmy and sorting!

I made three piles:

Pile 1- Clothing to be altered.
Pile 2- Clothing to be given away - i.e. donated.
Pile 3 -Clothing to be throw away - the ripped and faded.

I bundled the clothing to be donated and took straight to Goodwill. Last year, more than 58 million people donated to Goodwill. There are more than 3,300 Goodwill donations locations in North America (one has to be near you).

Funny thing--when I was getting rid of my old size 8s and 10s, I realized how much I wore "throw aways"--zippers that wouldn't stay up because they were worn out, "holey" clothes... things with stains I wouldn't give anyone else. So why was I wearing them?

I encourage readers who are reluctant to buy more clothes to go ahead and buy them even if they're still losing--you'll feel better...

PS I've maintained 20 pounds off and being a size 6 for six months--and sometimes I'm even a size 4! Hallelujah.... Going out and treating myself to all those clothes and then getting rid of my larger pants IS a motivator to keep slim.

I think that changing my mental attitude about my body image is very difficult. I am my biggest critic. And thank you for your post. A lot of wisdom shows. Action is my problem. I don't take action in the wisdom I learn from others. I am in the process of changing this though which is exciting. Being a book addict, I chose Libby Gill's book, YOU UNSTUCK to help me understand my Ruts, and learn the tools to get out of them by taking certain actions. http://www.libbygill.com/
Baby steps, is what I call them. I love the authors techniques. I can feel my mental attitude changing.

I like the idea of throwing my fat clothes out. How liberating!
