Our Lady of Weight Loss

420 is National Weed Day

Today is 420 a.k.a. National Weed Day, Marijuana Appreciation Day, National Smoke Day and Stoners Day.
The origins of 420 are a bit cloudy or covered in smoke, if you will. Urban legend has it that back in 1971, San Rafael High School students used “420″ as a code word to meet after school at 4:20 p.m. to light up a doobie and get stoned. A slightly different version says that on 4/20 in 1971, a group of college students lit up joints to protest for the legalization of marijuana.
While this holiday is fast becoming one of the more popular here in the States, Marijuana is still an illegal substance. Medical Marijuana – used by patients for cancer, AIDS, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis and Lou Gehrig’s disease is legal in Australia, the Netherlands, Belgium, Canada and 14 states; Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington.
Medical marijuana has been used in the treatment of the following:
AIDS. Marijuana can reduce the nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite caused by the ailment itself and by various AIDS medications.
Glaucoma. Marijuana can reduce interlobular pressure, thereby alleviating the pain and slowing — and sometimes stopping — the progress of the condition. (Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in the United States. It damages vision by increasing eye pressure over time.)
Cancer. Marijuana can stimulate the appetite and alleviate nausea and vomiting, which are common side effects of chemotherapy treatment.
Multiple Sclerosis. Marijuana can limit the muscle pain and spasticity caused by the disease, as well as relieving tremor and unsteadiness of gait. (Multiple sclerosis is the leading cause of neurological disability among young and middle-aged adults in the United States.)
Epilepsy. Marijuana can prevent epileptic seizures in some patients.
Chronic Pain. Marijuana can alleviate the chronic, often debilitating pain caused by myriad disorders and injuries
420 demonstrations (and celebrations) are planned throughout the day across the country. Will you demonstrate for the legalization of marijuana? What are you views on medical marijuana?

“You are 70% beautiful, 75% naughty, 80% sweet, 95% true, 100% lovely. In total if you sum up, you are a 420.” ~ Unknown

I find this post utterly ignorant and offensive and you have obviously never been effected by another person’s drug abuse.

Elizabeth, I don’t agree with you at all. Everyone has it’s own opinion about things!

I don’t think this is about drug abuse; I think this column is simply presenting some interesting facts about the day and medical marijuana. When you think of all the prescription drugs that are given to us by doctors and the pharmaceuticals that are harmful to us, it seems medical marijuana makes sense. Thanks Janice, for the light hearted info.

Elizabeth,
You are confusing drug use with drug abuse, speaking of “utterly ignoranat”.
Maybe you just take offense too easily.

Alcohol and cigarettes are legal…if it were legal, it sure would help our national debt…just a thought!

To elizabeth: you are certainly confusing drug abuse with ignorance.
My thoughts on the issue? I don’t give a damn if someone uses it or not…if it helps them with a medical issue, great…if they just use it recreationally…that’s also fine by me. I wouldn’t use it myself though (whether I had a medical problem or not)

The bottom line is people will abuse drugs and alcohol legal or not. I think it is outragous that medical use of marijuana is not legal in all the states and it has still not be decriminalized. Do you think someone who carries around a couple of joints should be treated as a hardened drug addict? The court systems are already jammed up, if marijuana was decrinimalized that would free up the system somewhat. Make it a fine instead of a criminal act. Come on Mr. Obama get with the times!

Elizabeth – did you mean affected? When using words such as ignorant one might want to ensure proper word usage in one’s sentence. Just saying. As for being AFFECTED by another’s drug use, how did someone using marijuana hurt you? Cocaine, heroin, methamphetamines, even alcohol I can see, but marijuana? Really? I don’t buy it.

As a recovering addict (3 years clean and sober), I can tell you first hand that Marijuana is addicting. I was in denial for years about it, YES it did affect my family and friends and mostly me. My high altered my thinking, it allowed me to stay in denial that my behaviour was not hurting anyone,I lived in a fantasy. I have a brother who today needs and uses it for his pain it helped me with my pain. What I know for me and for sure today there is a difference in using it and abusing it!

Marijuana should have been legalized Many Many years ago. It’s ridiculous! And it Does Not lead to stronger drugs. If someone is going to do stronger drugs that will happen regardless of them ever even trying marijuana. I was hit by a DRUNK DRIVER August l984 at 50mph on a neighborhood street, I was at a stop sign. I don’t remember anything other than waking up weeks later in the hospital where I stayed over 5weeks and have been in pain every second since. In seconds, DEFINITELY CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER!! If he was smoking pot(WHICH SLOWS YOU DOWN)and hit me we both would have driven away from the accident w/dents on our vehicles. My car was demolished and I was pronounced Dead on Arrival-head/neck injury. I’m now 56 and have Never heard of Anyone getting hurt by smoking marijuana(although, not good for your lungs, but cigarettes worse & people smoke them Much more) All my doctors, of which I’ve had Many since Aug.1984, know I smoke Pot. It helps my pain Big time, my nerves & helps me to sleep!!! I don’t smoke cigarettes, drink much or do any other drugs & pot helps better than most medications, plus don’t like taking meds. LET’S GET IT DONE AND LEGALIZED, NOW!! It Will also slow down street crime Everywhere.
