New Year Promises – Surprising Way to Keep Them

The new year is a time of hope and promise. We promise that we are going to lose weight, exercise more, de-clutter, stop smoking, walk the straight and narrow. We promise to get our act together in some way, shape or form.
A burst of hope accompanies each promise, followed by a wave of excited and elation! Your intentions are good but … as soon as you hit an unavoidable bump in the road … self-doubt sets in and your inner-critic (a.k.a. your evil twin) pipes up.

“I knew you couldn’t do it.”
“What’s wrong with you?”
“You’re no good, you’re no good, you’re no good.”
(Am I right, or am I right?!)

Sooner or later your river of hope and enthusiasm runs dry, and you return to your old and tired ‘default setting.’ The old habits return, take hold and there you are again.
Today, I am asking you to please take a moment to think about what it means to make a promise to yourself. If you keep your promises to others, why then – when you promise yourself something – something so essential as health, wellness and joy – do you renege on your promise?

First and foremost, be true yourself.
Keep the promises you make to yourself.
Make this year the year!
