Our Lady of Lent : What are you giving up?

Morning All,

I am inspired by the emails that I am receiving from y'all telling me what you are giving up and/or adding to your lives during Lent (the 40-day liturgical season that begins on Ash Wednesday and concludes at the Great Vigil of Easter), thus, the above Our Lady of Lent!

Some are giving up ...
... SUGAR! most especially HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP!

... adding WALKING to their lives;

... another is honoring herself by giving up "beating myself up for not living according to the rules, whims, and strictures of others-especially when it comes to what I should eat."

Catholic or not, how might you use this period of time to explore how you might live a healthier lifestyle. Please comment below ... how might you live a healthier lifestyle???

Want to Lose Weight? Then ... READ THIS!

CALORIES RULE The largest-ever controlled study of weight-loss methods was published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine. More than 800 overweight adults were assigned to one of four diets that reduced calories through a variety of combinations. No one ate fewer than 1,200 calories per day!

At the end of this two year study, the big lesson learned is that people lose weight if they lower calories, AND it does not matter how. (I've been saying that for seven years. Like HOLA? Is anyone listening to me?)

Dr. Frank M. Sacks, the study's lead author and professor of cardiovascular disease prevention at the Harvard School of Public Health said, "It gives people lots of flexibility to pick a diet that they can stick with."

Financial Crisis: 5 Money Rituals that Increase Cash Flow

In these financial tight times, Our Lady of Weight Loss requested that I share her 5 favorite money rituals with you. She feels confident that these rituals will not only keep the money flowing and returning to you, but will also 'lighten' the air and mood of the house! And, in effect, will help to keep the emotional eating in check! (OLofWL is always thinking!) Have FUN!!

BILLS FACE FORWARD: Always keep your bills facing toward you. As you hand your money to a clerk, the face on the bill should be looking at you as you say to yourself, "money knows me and comes home to me!"

CLEAR THE CLUTTER: Make sure that your money is NOT crumpled up or jammed into your purse and/or wallet AND clean the clutter out of said money holders! Handle money as if you value it!

GIVE GENEROUSLY. Money is simple a form of energy. And as all energy, it needs to flow through your life, not just into it all jammed into the corners. Money needs air, light and space to grow. Even though these are some financially tight times, it is important to give as generously as you can. If not money, then give your time and energy! Spread the love. Give with your heart!

ATTRACTIVE COVER. Put your checkbook in a pretty cover, preferably green, purple or red. And then store it in the wealth area of your desk (rear left corner).

GREEN AND PURPLE GRAPES. Fill a bowl with green and purple grapes (preferably real grapes; not artificial!), and place the bowl in the wealth area of your kitchen (left corner from point of entry). The grapes symbolize abundance filing your home. If you eat the grapes, be sure to refill the bowl, always keeping your bowl half full!

Financial Crisis Aside: The Power of the Presidential Smile

I watched the President's address last night and wow! I could not help but to be positively and happily affected by all the infectious smiles from both sides of the aisle - in particular both President Obama's smile and Vice President Biden's smile.

Did you know that one of the best things you can do for yourself and for everyone around you is to smile? Smiling brings oxygen to your brain, immediately makes you feel better, and sends out comforting messages to others. (Last night's speech was comforting, wasn't it?) Smiling pulls people in nice and close.

A true smile comes from genuine pleasure. Two sets of facial muscles are used to create this smile. The first set is in the cheeks that pull up the corners of the mouth; the second set is around the eyes. These muscles cause the eyes to narrow and crinkle.

Smiling can make you look like an inviting, accepting, likable and pleasant person (even if you're not). When you first meet someone, if you don't smile that person is likely to think that you're not interested in or attracted to them. They may even think you are a cold potato. So, even if you're feeling blue or simply not in the mood to smile, do yourself a favor - smile anyway. Fake it until you make it!

The health benefits of smiling are plentiful.

Smiling ...
-increases the production of endorphins, natural pain killers and serotonin, a hormone that regulates your mood;
-boosts your immune system and increases the number and activity of -antibodies that fight infection;
-lowers your blood pressure;
-helps you to relax;
-relieves stress;
-enhances respiratory function;
-exercises 15-26 facial muscles;
-makes you look younger as it lifts the face; and
-fires up various parts of the brain!

More fabulous facts about smiling that are sure to make you smile ~

- 72% of people think that those who smile frequently are confident and successful;
- 86% of people are more likely to talk to strangers if they are smiling;
- bosses are 12% more likely to promote people who smile a lot;
- research shows that 65% of communication is non-verbal (some say even higher); and
- studies show that happiness is a by-product of smiling, not that those who are happy smile as most people assume.

Pancakes Today: Lent Tomorrow

Batter Up!!! Pancake Tuesday known also as Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras, is celebrated the day before the beginning of Lent. This is the time that we remember the forty days that Jesus spent in the desert. It is also known as Shrove Tuesday, from the word shriven, which means 'you are cleansed of your sins before Lent begins.'

Several centuries ago, the English traditionally used up all the fat and flour before the fasting of Lent began and pancakes were the best way to do this. Thus, Pancake Tuesday!

Low-Fat and Sugar-Free Pancakes

Ingredients:

2 egg whites *
1 egg *
1 cup buttermilk *
2 to 3 tbsp. natural applesauce (no sugar) *
1 cup flour *
1 tsp. baking powder *
1/2 tsp. baking soda *
1/2 tsp. salt *
1/4 cup blueberries

Directions: Mix ingredients together. Spray griddle with Pam. Pour batter onto hot griddle. Serve with spreadable fruit (no sugar) or applesauce or nothing - just plain. YUM.
