Quick Weight Loss Tips: Caffeine

Quick Weight Loss : CaffeineJava Junkies, Rejoice! Have you heard? Coffee, the most popular drink in America - next to water - may help some lose weight as it increases the number of calories you burn per hour by 44%! Caffeinated coffee increases your metabolism. Cuppa Joe, be mine!

And that's not all! My cup runneth over with the virtues of coffee.

According to a 10-year study conducted by the University of Bristol, scientists have found that a cup of coffee can sharpen your attention.

Some reports indicate that coffee may reduce the risk of colon cancer by 25%, because it helps to keep you regular. (No need for prunes!)

Coffee may reduce the risk of bladder cancer, skin cancer, diabetes, Parkinson's disease, and coffee may reduce the risk of developing kidney stones.

Theophylline, a compound in coffee, acts as a bronchodilator. For those with asthma, drinking coffee can lessen symptoms by 25 percent.

Coffee increases your alertness, which may, in fact, allow you to experience the joie de vie!

Now, don't go hog wild guzzling gallons of the stuff, but it looks as though three or four cups a day (under 2 cups if you're pregnant) won't do you any harm.

Drink up!
Coffee Product / Caffeine Range (in milligrams)

Coffee (8-oz cup)
Brewed / 65-120 mg
Instant / 60 - 85mg
Decaffeinated, brewed / 2-4 mg
Decaffeinated, instant / 1-4 mg
Espresso, 1-oz. cup / 30-50 mg
Cappuccino and Latte, 1-oz shot / 30-50 mg
Moccachino, 1-oz shot / 35-55 mg

Full-bodied, dark-roast coffee may contain less caffeine than coffee made from milder, more lightly roasted beans. Arabica beans tend to have less caffeine but are milder in flavor than robusta beans. Also, the caffeine content of prepared coffee beverages may vary depending on the supplier's recipe formula.

Quick Weight Loss Center

Our Lady of Weight Loss invites you to visit her Quick Weight Loss Center. Never boring, always exciting!

Curiosity: An Antidote to Eating Due to Boredom

For those of us who eat out of boredom (too many of us to count, yes?), it's time to get curious about our curiosity muscles.

"Curiosity muscle?" you ask. Yes, we all have one to one degree or another. Some more than less and some less than more, but we all possess an ongoing, inherent interest in our outer worlds. From our interest in the people we know (snooping), the weather (will it be a sunny day?); how much is that house selling for around the corner? - to wondering about the state of the world, as well as how many trees are left in the rain forest.

We are curious about our inner worlds. What makes me feel that way? Why am I happy one moment and frustrated the next? What thought triggered me to go to the fridge (again)?- to asking the big existential question: Why is chocolate so much a part of my consciousness?

Wrap Your Curiosity Muscle Around This
Those who are exercising their curiosity muscles are rarely bored, because they are occupied (mentally and sometimes physically) exploring their fascination with new people, new things and new experiences. Therefore, if you have effectively eliminated boredom, you have, in turn, eliminated eating out of boredom!

How will you build your exercise muscle? Get engaged in life!

The Sweet Borscht Cure: End sugar cravings

Our Lady of Weight Loss - Sweet Borscht CureBorscht is a culinary favorite in many Central and European countries. Its main ingredient - the sugar beet - can easily satisfy your sweet tooth.

Beets have the highest sugar content of any vegetable, and they are low in calories. Only 75 per cup! Could it be that this simple recipe from the Our Lady of Weight Loss kitchens is the secret ingredient to your weight loss success?

Before I share Our Lady of Weight Loss's Righteous SWEET BEET BORSCHT Recipe, here follows some interesting information about beets!

Sweet Beet
The beets we eat are called red beets, root beets and/or table beets. They are a root vegetable and both their root (the beet) and their leaves (the greens) are edible. They are grown in more than 30 states and are available throughout the year, although their peak season is June through October. In other words, your beets are peaking now baby!

Small, young beets (about 1-1/2 in. diameter) are best because they are tender little things and cook up faster than their tough, woody cored chubby (over 2 in. diameter) counterparts.

Beets should be smooth, hard, round and a deep red color, as well as blemish free. The taproot, the part that extends from the bulbous part of the beet, should be slender. If you are planning on eating the greens, be sure that they are small, crisp and dark green, measuring no more 8 inches. Nor should they be limp or yellowed. (Wow, that's a lot to remember.)

And one more thing ... Never and I mean never cut or peel them before cooking in liquid, lest they will 'bleed' and turn a very unappetizing brown. You may, however, scrub them gently and rinse.

To Bake: Wrap beets in foil, place in baking pan and bake in a 350 degree F to 400 degree F oven until soft (1 1/2 to 2 hours). Unwrap foil and let them stand until cool enough to hand, then peel.

To Boil: Some of the color and nutrients may be lost in the boiling process, but this is the most common way to cook beets. Place beets in a pot of boiling water, cover, and simmer until the beets are just tender (40 minutes to 1 1/2 hours, depending on size and quantity of beets).

To Steam: Place beets in a vegetable steamer over boiling water (approximately 40 minutes).

To Microwave: Place about one pound of whole beets in a microwavable dish with 1/4 cup liquid. Cover and cook on high until tender (10 minutes or so).

AND NOW!!! ... A one pot wonder from the Our Lady of Weight Loss Kitchen
The Sweet Beet Borscht Cure : Beat Sugar Cravings

Ingredients: 2 red beets, peeled and diced * 1 Yukon gold potato, chopped into bite size cubes * 1 carrot, peeled and diced * 1 turnip, peeled and diced * 1 cup of shredded green cabbage * 4 cups of organic vegetable broth * 1 cup of crushed tomatoes * fresh dill * salt n' pepper to taste * low fat sour cream

Instructions: Combine all ingredients in a large pot * bring to a simmer * cover and cook until red beets and potatoes are tender (about 40 minutes or so) * add dill, salt, pepper to taste * chill and service cold with low-fat sour cream

Oprah's Book Club: Summer Reading 2009 - Our Lady of Weight Loss!

Our Lady of Weight Loss: Miraculous and Motivational Musings from the Patron Saint of Permanent Fat RemovalIt's official!!! Our Lady of Weight Loss: Miraculous and Motivational Musings from the Patron Saint of Permanent Fat Removal by Beliefnet.com blogger Janice Taylor is one of Oprah's picks for Summer Reading 2009.

Special thanks to Kick in the Tush Club member Adriana for forwarding me Oprah's newsletter that featured Our Lady of Weight Loss along side the rest of her summer picks.

I couldn't be more delighted, as you can well imagine. Our Lady of Weight Loss was and is a labor of love. I want to share my tips, tricks, recipes and my secrets to my own 50 pound weight loss with as many people as possible. I was heavy my entire life - a fat kid, weighing in at 112 pounds at 8 years-old - yo-yo'ing from that point forward.

Permanently removing 50 pounds (gone now for 8 years!) is a miracle! Here's what Oprah had to say about Our Lady of Weight Loss...

"It takes a kooky kind of genius to turn weight loss into an art project, and Taylor's soaking in it. Six years ago, she began to turn food into collages and dioramas. She shed 50 pounds in the process and has kept it off. See if her idiosyncratic diet plan will work for you." ~ Oprah's Book Club, Summer Reading 2009

... If you haven't picked up your copy yet, do so!!! You will love it.

Platterfuls of gratitude for your support!
