It is particularly important to go into the 'light' during this time of year, when the sun sets earlier and earlier and we are less likely to get out.
Too little sun light can activate cravings for fatty, high-calorie foods like cakes, cookies and chips. Lack of sunlight reduces the brain's production of serotonin, the mood-boosting brain chemical that not only helps us to feel happy but also suppresses food cravings and bingeing!
So ... Open your drapes and blinds. If you work in a windowless office, take a power walk at lunchtime. Twenty minutes of sunlight a day should do it.
Join me as we KICK those dreary blues away, ward off cravings and bingeing. Walk on the sunny side of the street. Hooray! LIGHT!!!!

Are you tired of thinking about ... well, everything? Do you have about as much enthusiasm as a wet noodle? Do you feel like you just ought to curl up in bed, with or without the bonbons? Me too!
Yesterday was an extreme day for me. I was multi-tasking like a 300-arm octopus. Truthfully, nothing to complain about any more than anyone else. I'm just sayin' it was TOO MUCH!!! By the time the mid-afternoon rolled around, I felt like a rung out dish rag. You know what I mean?
So, I called out to Our Lady of Weight Loss for HELPpppppppp!!!! And here's what she advised me to do.
How to Move from RUNG OUT DISH RAG to WOO HOO HAPPY in 15 Minutes or Less! Our Lady of Weight Loss ... helping to remove the weight of the world from our shoulders!
Take a Hike: Get outta the house and take a brisk or not-so-brisk 15 minute walk. It's amazing what a short walk can do! (I put on my baseball cap and sunglasses and headed outside incognito because I was a true mess ... and walked around the local park. Whoa ... was that great!)
Hot Aromatherapy Bath: Even if you only take a 15 minute bath break, fill up the tub with your best aromatherapy oils. Enjoy the soak! Breathe Deep!!! Bonus: not only will you smell good, but so will your bathroom and quite possibly the rest of your house!
Phone a Friend: Call someone and say, "Do you have a few minutes to listen. I need to unload and tell someone my 'story.'" This is not being negative. This is not wallowing in self-pity. Neither of which I believe in. This is unloading, clearing space in your head so that you can MOVE ON! This is admitting that you are human, you have your limits and you have reached them! Caution: Limit your B&M (bitch n' moan) session to 3 minutes. 5 minutes, tops! Don't want to burn-out your friend.
Plan a FUN Activity: Either block out some time for yourself later in your day, the next day or the next week. Be sure to PUT IT ON YOUR CALENDAR (yes, I'm yelling). Do have something FUN to look forward to. (Tonight, Peter and I are going to the movies ... don't know which one yet, but I am pickin' it!)
Feed on Inspiring Words: Read a passage from your favorite book. The Bible or even the greatest permanent fat removal book ever - All Is Forgiven, Move On - something you can easily pick up and put down. Find something that shifts you from angst to ahhhhhh.
Well, there you have it. I took a full hour off and did one thing after the other. A walk, a hot bath, phoned a friend, planned to go to the movies and read my own book! (In all honesty and with great humility, it's an inspiring and uplifting book.
Please, do tell ... how do you move from RUNG OUT DISH RAG to WOO HOO HAPPY?!!!

When I was a kid, I proudly showed my grandma my spelling test ... "Look, Grandma!!! I got 100% on my spelling test. I'm smart." To which she replied, "Don't say nice things about yourself. People will think you are conceded."
With all due respect to my sweet, loving and apple-pie-bakin' grandma, I say, "Boloney!"
It's okay to be proud of your accomplishments. It's okay to like yourself. Even love yourself!!!
Now ... if you are not full hog in love with yourself, here are a few things that you can do to boost your love quotient.
1. Be Brave. Ask the 'right' people for a list of things they like about you. Be sure - for goodness sake - to ask the right people. Don't ask my grandma!
Hearing what people have to say about you is useful. Take notes. Write down what True Friend "A" said about you as well as True Friend "B" and "C." If you are in need of a True Friend, write me! Should your 'evil twin' or 'alien' ... you know, your critical voice, surface - you can take your list out and read it!
2. Give Yourself Permission. Now that other people have voiced your value for you, make a list of the things you like about yourself. If you are having difficulty saying nice things about yourself, start with something really small. Like ... I like that I read blogs on Beliefnet, because it shows that I am a spiritual seeker. Keep this list, too!
3. Be Your Own Best Friend. In your mind's eye think of someone you love. Remember all the things about them that you appreciate; their special qualities. Take all those good, warm and happy feelings of love and bundle them up and now turn around (in your mind's eye) and wrap those feelings around yourself. Ahhhhh ...
4. Practice Self-Forgiveness. Have compassion for yourself. Let the judgment go. Let the upset go. Imagine if you held a grudge against every friend or family member the way you do against yourself. All Is Forgiven, Move On!
5. Go Affirmation Crazy. Write strong, loving statements on paper. Read them aloud as you look at yourself in the mirror! (For me, after I've had my morning coffee and my hair is fluffed.)
"I am lovable."
"I am kind."
"I am compassionate, intelligent, wise, beautiful, sweet, creative ... "
It's okay if you don't believe it. Fake it till you make it!
If you like, you can write out your affirmations and post them all over the place ... on the refrigerator. "I deserve healthy food." "I give myself health." On the bathroom mirror. "I am fabulous." "I start my day with a smile." (Mine say, "I deserve love." And in small print, for my husband, Peter, I write ... "these are mind: get your own affirmations!" HA!!)
6. Find YOUR Way. Maybe one or two of these "points of love" will resonate; maybe not. Either way, it's important for you to ask yourself, "What can I do to help myself feel love, compassion for ME? How can I practice self-loving kindness?"
It's more important to ask the right questions than come up with quick answers. Take a walk, move through your day. Ask yourself these questions and allow the answer to bubble up from with you. After all, self-love begins and end with YOU!
AND ... in keeping with weight loss ... when you love yourself, you will easily and effortlessly give yourself the gift of health!
