Cookie Monster: Cute but addictive?

Will the real Cookie Monster please stand up.

Have you made giving up sugar year after year? Have you tried giving up the three c's (cookies, cakes and candy) over and over again? Were you up-ended by a deep and inexplicable craving for Dulce de Leche Caramel Haagen Dazs ice cream? Are you a sugar addict?

Sugar addiction is no joke. For many years, researchers and doctors did not believe that you could get hooked on an innocent piece of candy or sugar-filled cookie, but now studies that scientists have been compiling over the years are pointing to addiction.

While it is true that Chocolate Cheese Cake is not in the same league as heroin, alcohol or nicotine, it appears that some brain responses may overlap. All of these addictions produce a pleasurable response that fuel a desire for more. Can you stop at just one chocolate chip double fudge cookie supreme? I don't think so.

Did you know that sugar addicts tend to be depleted of key vitamins and minerals, which may weaken their immune system? The average American consumes approximately 24 teaspoons of sugar each day. What's your intake? How much of an addict are you? Do you want to get off the stuff?

Here are a few Our Lady of Weight Loss approved suggestions to help you bust your sugar habit:

1. Never skip breakfast. Those who eat breakfast are less likely to crave sugar. Your body wants that energy boost first thing in the morning to get all your gears in motion. If you skip your morning oatmeal, you're likely to start craving that chocolate chip cookie come afternoon. Low sugar breakfasts include eggs, whole-grain unsweetened cereal, fruit, and unsweetened yogurt.

2. Never skip any meal! Skipping meals in general is a bad idea. Eating balanced meals at regular intervals keeps your brain and body fueled, so you don't crave heavy starchy or sugary foods for energy.

3. Get enough sleep. Rest. Once again, the body starts to crave starchy and/or sugary food for energy - for fuel. When you feel the need to nap, do so. Listen to your body.

4. Excessive salt can trigger sugar cravings. Fast food restaurants and processed foods use salt to stimulate your appetite. They want you to eat more! Read labels (I did a little pantry reading this morning. They had to get out the smelling salts!). Make low-sodium choices.

5. Eat whole foods (not refined carbohydrates). Refined foods a.k.a. empty calorie foods such as white bread, cookies, cake and candy, don't satisfy your body because they lack nutrients and fiber. Try eating more fruit, carrots, beets, sweet potatoes, winter squash! They're loaded with the good stuff.

6. And sorry to say - there's no donut in the world that's going to take away your emotional tugs, pulls and pain. Try yoga, walking, talking to a friend.

I know - easier said than done - but no one said bustin' sugar would be easy!

Quick Weight Loss Tips: Caffeine

Quick Weight Loss : CaffeineJava Junkies, Rejoice! Have you heard? Coffee, the most popular drink in America - next to water - may help some lose weight as it increases the number of calories you burn per hour by 44%! Caffeinated coffee increases your metabolism. Cuppa Joe, be mine!

And that's not all! My cup runneth over with the virtues of coffee.

According to a 10-year study conducted by the University of Bristol, scientists have found that a cup of coffee can sharpen your attention.

Some reports indicate that coffee may reduce the risk of colon cancer by 25%, because it helps to keep you regular. (No need for prunes!)

Coffee may reduce the risk of bladder cancer, skin cancer, diabetes, Parkinson's disease, and coffee may reduce the risk of developing kidney stones.

Theophylline, a compound in coffee, acts as a bronchodilator. For those with asthma, drinking coffee can lessen symptoms by 25 percent.

Coffee increases your alertness, which may, in fact, allow you to experience the joie de vie!

Now, don't go hog wild guzzling gallons of the stuff, but it looks as though three or four cups a day (under 2 cups if you're pregnant) won't do you any harm.

Drink up!
Coffee Product / Caffeine Range (in milligrams)

Coffee (8-oz cup)
Brewed / 65-120 mg
Instant / 60 - 85mg
Decaffeinated, brewed / 2-4 mg
Decaffeinated, instant / 1-4 mg
Espresso, 1-oz. cup / 30-50 mg
Cappuccino and Latte, 1-oz shot / 30-50 mg
Moccachino, 1-oz shot / 35-55 mg

Full-bodied, dark-roast coffee may contain less caffeine than coffee made from milder, more lightly roasted beans. Arabica beans tend to have less caffeine but are milder in flavor than robusta beans. Also, the caffeine content of prepared coffee beverages may vary depending on the supplier's recipe formula.

True or False: Our body produces 'aspirin.'

Flu.jpgTasty Tidbit: According to UK scientists, it's true! A food plan that includes a bounty of fruits and vegetables can help our bodies produce its own salicyclic acid (SA), the material formed when aspirin breaks down in the body.

The how of it.
A recent study noted in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry showed that participants who received benzoic acid, a natural substance found in fruits and vegetables, manufactured their own salicyclic acid. SA is the primary component in aspirin that produces anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties.

Further, researchers revealed that SA levels in vegetarians were found to be very high.
The studies concluded that we can produce SA!

Kim and Kloe Kardashian: How to turn a 15-minute sex tape into a 'miracle' weight loss cure

janice before-after postcard copy.jpgAs Kim and Kloe Kardashian launch their new diet product, "Quick Trim" - a lemonade cleanse set to hit the GNC shelves in August - Our Lady of Weight Loss offers a red-hot Kick in the Tush!

Kim and Kloe Kardashian have partnered with GNC to launch "Quick Trim," their version of the lemonade cleanse, this summer. Before you buy into the latest diet miracle, consider this:

Kim's foray into fame and fortune was via a sex tape with Ray J, Brandy's brother. In addition to having her own clothing line and representing numerous products, Kim also signed with Nivea to be a part of the 'girls with curves and cellulite' rock campaign.

Kloe, who exercises daily, reportedly eats little past noon and limits herself to one glass of champagne per girly girl outing, says that their special lemonade elixir helped her to shed 20 pounds.

Our Lady of Weight Loss wants to remind you that there are no quick fixes, no miracle cures, no magic bullets and that liquid diets and lemonade cleanses are not sustainable. Further, Our Lady of Weight Loss is curious to know, "Are the Kardashian girls coming from a clean and authentic helping place or is this all about show me the money?"

Remember, our goal is to permanently remove excess weight, NOT to lose weight and then find it ... again!

Might the latest miracle cure be just another 'Stay Fat Strategy in disguise?'

Think about that as you pass this "Kick in the Tush" forward.
