How to Be a Happy Idiot!

Woo Hoo, I am so excited to be alive!!! Well - the truth of the matter is this...

This morning, just as my eyes were fluttering their way to open, in that moment between sleep and wake, I tuned into my thoughts and heard myself say "Crap, it's time to get up."

I know from experience (as I'm sure we all do) that when we start the day on a 'crappy' note, it makes it that much more difficult to muster up enough energy to make the best choices, food or otherwise!

So ... in that moment of hearing myself 'crap out,' I turned it around.
I remembered that - for starters - I am alive! Blessed with yet another beautiful fall day in NYC. Happy to write you! I made a mental note of 5 things that I am genuinely grateful for, and my energy began to bubble up happy.

And then ... I tuned into the most delightful video: "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life," from Ren & Stimpy, featuring the best ever Monty Python song.

Joyously, can I now report to you that I am officially a happy idiot! I invite you to join with me!

Three Easy Steps: How to Be a Happy Idiot!
1. Think a happy thought.
2. Look at the bright side of life.
3. Watch this video. Again!

Seriously, it's relatively easy to change your mind, your point of view, your thoughts, your feelings. The more difficult part is to remember to do so!

How will you remember to wake up happy?

Halloween Quotes: Eat, drink and be scary.

Halloween Greetings from Our Lady of Weight LossAs I head out to buy candy that I do not like for Halloween (no point in tempting myself!), I am also gathering fun quotes to print and hand out to the adults that accompany the children. I know, very fun and clever! What can I say? I'm doing my absolute best to make Halloween about fun, creativity and less about candy!

Here are my favorites! I encourage you to think outside of the Halloween Candy Bag and find the fun in the accessories. The quotes, the movies, the costume, the laughter, the joy and the spookiness of it all!

"I'll bet living in a nudist colony takes all the fun out of Halloween." ~ Anonymous

"Eat, drink and be scary." ~ Anonymous

"A grandmother pretends she doesn't know who you are on Halloween." ~ Erma Bombeck

"Halloween is the one night a year when girls can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it." ~ Lindsay Lohan, Mean Girls

"On Halloween, the parents sent their kids out looking like me." ~ Rodney Dangerfield

"There are nights when the wolves are silent and only the moon howls." ~ George Carlin

Miss Universe 2009: What does she eat? (video)

Whether you are a fan of beauty pageants or not, whether you were rooting for Miss Venezuela Stefania Fernandez or not, you've got to be wondering, "What are these girls eating? What's their secret to their flawless skin?"

Like the heart, stomach, and brain, your skin is an organ. In fact, it's the largest organ in your body and it grows from the inside out. There are many nutrients, including protein, vitamins, minerals, healthy fats and water that are needed to condition, repair and regenerate your skin.

Water, sometimes called the forgotten nutrient, rids your body of toxins and keeps skin moist. Be sure to drink approximately half your body weight in ounces per day.

For healthy and beautiful skin, here's the A, B, C skinny on the subject:

Vitamin A helps to even out skin tone, diminish fine lines and may help to make skin more elastic.
Sources: egg yolks, milk and dairy products, fish oil.

Vitamin B controls oil secretion, decreases propensity towards blemishes, and helps to prevent scaly skin.
Sources: Poultry, fish, whole grains, dried beans, bananas, meat, leafy green veggies as well as dairy products.

Vitamin C helps heal scar tissue, cuts and bruises and protects against UVA rays.
Sources: Citrus fruits, broccoli, cabbage, tomatoes, berries, melon, peppers, potatoes.

Vitamin D helps to moisturize and condition skin.
Sources: Egg yolks, salmon, herring and fortified milk.

Vitamin E conditions and moisturizes skin, helps heal burns, inflammation, cuts, and irritation and may minimize formation of scars.
Sources: wheat germ, nuts, vegetable oil, green leafy vegetables, whole grains.

Essential fatty acids moisturize the skin while helping to maintain its barrier function.
Sources: flaxseed oil, evening primrose oil, blackcurrants, safflower oil, borage seed oil, linolenic acid.

Vitamin K reduces bruising, may help relieve dark circles under eyes, treats actinic purpura in aged skin, and may help fade broken capillaries.
Sources: green leafy vegetables.

Food Inc.: The Food Industry and You. A Wake Up Video.

Food, Inc. is a mind-blowing, stomach-twisting, eye-opening and ultimately heart-breaking film. See it - today!

Filmmaker Robert Kenner 'lifts the veil' on our nation's food industry. Our food supply is now controlled by a handful of for-big-profit corporations who seem to be far more concerned about making money than our health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of their workers or our environment.

This film is more than horrifying scenes of overcrowded slaughterhouses, where animals are forced to graze in pools of their own manure. This movie, for me, is about our most basic rights.

We are being just as manipulated by the largest corporations as the food we are being sold. Wake up!

The manipulation of foods and the feeding of livestock have manifested bigger-breasted chickens. 50 years ago it took 70 days to raise a chicken to slaughter. Today it takes 48. It's unnatural.

The country's top four meatpackers control 80 percent of the beef market. One single fast-food burger might have come from 400 different cows.

The gut of a cow fed on corn breeds the deadliest strains of E. coli, a harmful bacteria that makes an estimated 73,000 Americans sick annually; including the tragic death of Barbara Kowalcyk's young son Kevin, who died from e coli earlier this decade from an outwardly harmless fast food burger.

Farmers are subsidized to overproduce corn, which then goes into Coke, Sweet & Low, diapers, Motrin and cattle feed.

Obesity is at epidemic proportions, and diabetes is on the rise among children and adults alike.

You will be shocked to learn about what you eat, how it is produced and who we, as a nation, have become.

Our freedoms are being taken away from us. Open your eyes.

10 things YOU CAN do! (source: foodincmovie.com)

1 . Stop drinking sodas and other sweetened beverages.
You can lose 25 lbs in a year by replacing one 20 oz soda a day with a no calorie beverage (preferably water).

2. Eat at home instead of eating out.
Children consume almost twice (1.8 times) as many calories when eating food prepared outside the home.

3. Support the passage of laws requiring chain restaurants to post calorie information on menus and menu boards.
Half of the leading chain restaurants provide no nutritional information to their customers.

4. Tell schools to stop selling sodas, junk food, and sports drinks.
Over the last two decades, rates of obesity have tripled in children and adolescents aged 6 to 19 years.

5. Meatless Mondays--Go without meat one day a week.
An estimated 70% of all antibiotics used in the United States are given to farm animals.

6. Buy organic or sustainable food with little or no pesticides.
According to the EPA, over 1 billion pounds of pesticides are used each year in the U.S.

7. Protect family farms; visit your local farmer's market.
Farmer's markets allow farmers to keep 80 to 90 cents of each dollar spent by the consumer.

8. Make a point to know where your food comes from--READ LABELS.
The average meal travels 1500 miles from the farm to your dinner plate.

9. Tell Congress that food safety is important to you.
Each year, contaminated food causes millions of illnesses and thousands of deaths in the U.S.

10. Demand job protections for farm workers and food processors, ensuring fair wages and other protections.
Poverty among farm workers is more than twice that of all wage and salary employees.
