Cookie Monster: Cute but addictive?

Will the real Cookie Monster please stand up.

Have you made giving up sugar year after year? Have you tried giving up the three c's (cookies, cakes and candy) over and over again? Were you up-ended by a deep and inexplicable craving for Dulce de Leche Caramel Haagen Dazs ice cream? Are you a sugar addict?

Sugar addiction is no joke. For many years, researchers and doctors did not believe that you could get hooked on an innocent piece of candy or sugar-filled cookie, but now studies that scientists have been compiling over the years are pointing to addiction.

While it is true that Chocolate Cheese Cake is not in the same league as heroin, alcohol or nicotine, it appears that some brain responses may overlap. All of these addictions produce a pleasurable response that fuel a desire for more. Can you stop at just one chocolate chip double fudge cookie supreme? I don't think so.

Did you know that sugar addicts tend to be depleted of key vitamins and minerals, which may weaken their immune system? The average American consumes approximately 24 teaspoons of sugar each day. What's your intake? How much of an addict are you? Do you want to get off the stuff?

Here are a few Our Lady of Weight Loss approved suggestions to help you bust your sugar habit:

1. Never skip breakfast. Those who eat breakfast are less likely to crave sugar. Your body wants that energy boost first thing in the morning to get all your gears in motion. If you skip your morning oatmeal, you're likely to start craving that chocolate chip cookie come afternoon. Low sugar breakfasts include eggs, whole-grain unsweetened cereal, fruit, and unsweetened yogurt.

2. Never skip any meal! Skipping meals in general is a bad idea. Eating balanced meals at regular intervals keeps your brain and body fueled, so you don't crave heavy starchy or sugary foods for energy.

3. Get enough sleep. Rest. Once again, the body starts to crave starchy and/or sugary food for energy - for fuel. When you feel the need to nap, do so. Listen to your body.

4. Excessive salt can trigger sugar cravings. Fast food restaurants and processed foods use salt to stimulate your appetite. They want you to eat more! Read labels (I did a little pantry reading this morning. They had to get out the smelling salts!). Make low-sodium choices.

5. Eat whole foods (not refined carbohydrates). Refined foods a.k.a. empty calorie foods such as white bread, cookies, cake and candy, don't satisfy your body because they lack nutrients and fiber. Try eating more fruit, carrots, beets, sweet potatoes, winter squash! They're loaded with the good stuff.

6. And sorry to say - there's no donut in the world that's going to take away your emotional tugs, pulls and pain. Try yoga, walking, talking to a friend.

I know - easier said than done - but no one said bustin' sugar would be easy!

The Holiday Diet: How to Wake Up Thinner - Tip 1

The Holiday Diet:  how to wake up thinner on New Year's Day from Our Lady of Weight LossThe Halloween Party is OVER! As Our Lady of Weight Loss says, "All is forgiven, MOVE ON!"

This morning, before anyone got up, I tip-toed into the kitchen - grabbed the leftover Halloween candy and dumped it. Down the garbage shoot ... gone! And you know what? It felt good. No great. I triumphed over the call of the "Sugar!"

I invite you to dump the candy, feel triumphant! Head into the Holiday season empowered and in control!

If dumping it doesn't work for you, then give it away! If you absolutely need to save one or two pieces for another day, okay! But that's it!

Columbus Day Special: How to Wake Up Thinner

dog halloween 20081A.jpgHalloween is only two weeks away and the onslaught of sugary candy is in full force. Candy piled high on every countertop, around every corner. Everywhere!!!

I'm wondering? How are you going to make it through the Holiday Glaze? Might you wake up on New Year's Day fatter than you are now? Seriously, folks! You might want to think about it now and actually 'create' these next few months so that they support you and your weight management goals. If you don't take control now, the "Devil's Food" will take you over!

Here, Our Lady of Weight Loss and Janice Taylor, 50 pound big-time-loser (that's me!), share 9 Tips from their inspired new e-program:

"The Holiday Diet: How to WAKE UP on New Year's Day THINNER than you are NOW!"

1. Manage your holiday expectations.
Remember ... Holidays are essentially just like any other day in life. They are filled with ups, downs, glitches and unexpected happenings. Whatever your expectations might be for this holiday season, I invite you to of lower them!!! NOW! And remember ... No one has read the script you've written for them. Nor - frankly - have you read the script they have written for you!

2. Be Yourself. Everyone else is already taken. ~ Oscar Wilde
Jot down a list of the qualities you like most about yourself and bring the list with to all holiday gatherings, in particular, family events! Read them early and often!

3. Don't Regress. Your brother isn't 13, and you're not 9.
It doesn't matter that he was bigger than you, elbowed you, teased you, took your favorite toy and smashed it! NO! It really is NOT relevant in the NOW. Let go of the past!

4. Do NOT Accept Delivery of the Family Fat Genes!
Just because your mother and your grandmother, your sisters and every female in your family (or male - if any men are out there) are fat, it doesn't mean that you have to accept the family genes, does it?

5. Who wants to gain a pound today?
Did you know that the average Thanksgiving dinner ranges from 2,000 to 4,500 calories? Did you know that one pound equals 3,500 calories? Let's get a grip and put calories into perspective.

6. Make Your Home Your Safe Haven.
Dump it! Sorry to shock you like that, but whatever and whenever there are leftovers, dump them immediately. Halloween candy? Dump it! Christmas cookies? Dump them!

7. Become a Foto-Food Journalist.
Bring a camera to events (again, family ones in particular!) and give yourself a journalistic assignment. Photograph the food before eating! Taking photos of the food creates an opportunity for you to pause and consider the food and your actions. Any time you can create a 'moment to pause and reflect,' you are practicing mindful eating. A good thing to do!

8. All or Nothing? Embrace the 80/20 plan.
Remember ... No one is perfect. That's why pencils have erasers!

9. Want Power!
There is no such thing as will power; only want power. You have to want to wake up thinner more than you want that slice of pumpkin pie! How will you exercise your want power muscle?

REMEMBER: Contrary to the agreed upon reality, you do NOT have to gain 6 or 7 pounds this holiday season. Create a new reality. Join with us as embark on The Holiday Diet! Let's start a new tradition: WAKE UP THINNER on New Year's Day!

09 09 09: 9 tips, 9 pounds in 9 minutes

It's 09 09 09 and Our Lady of Weight Loss has 9 tips to share with you that can help you to lose 9 pounds in 9 minutes.

How it works: Read these 9 tips slowly. One minute per tip, equaling 9 minutes. Make these tips a part of your healthy lifestyle and over time, you will easily and effortlessly shed those extra 9 pounds!

1. Savor the Flavor. Practice mindful eating as you focus on each and every bite. Slowing down provides an opportunity for you to not only savor the flavor, but to also get in touch with your feelings of hunger and satiety. Stop eating when sated!

2. No Bag Policy. Make it a rule to never, ever eat out of a bag. Count your crackers, put them on a pretty plate. Put the bag away. NOW! And re-read tip 1 - savor the flavor.

3. Small Dishes Delite. It's a scientific fact (published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine). People eat more when they use big plates and bowls than those who use small dishes, and they are equally as satisfied! Go small.

4. Can't Say No? Make a list - right now - of the foods that you absolutely cannot say no to. Now, go through your cabinets and toss them! Make your home a safe haven.

5. Bite it/Write it! Studies show that those who track their foods statistically lose twice as much as those who don't. Writing it down keeps you honest and conscious.

6. No Seat/No Eat. Do sit at your dining table. Do NOT stand and eat over the sink. Plain and simple.

7. Appetizer-Size Me. Most restaurants super-size their portions. Either order an appetizer as a main dish (if it's not enough, you can always order a second one) or doggy bag your food at the beginning of the meal. Ask your server to pack up half and bring half!

8. Eat Breakfast. Studies show that people who skip breakfast consume more calories during the course of the day. Eating breakfast kick starts your metabolism and gets the energy moving. Make it a part of your healthy lifestyle plan.

9. Fruits and Veggies as the Main Event. In order to ingest the suggested 5 to 9 servings daily, pile high your plates first with fruits and veggies. They provide fiber, minerals, vitamins, that not only help to fight disease but also help to control portions of starches and proteins, which for the most part, are way more than necessary.

Unexplained Phenomenon: The size of your appetite

People say, "I really don't understand why I am always hungry. It's this crazy thing, like an alien has taken over." People ask, "Can you shed 'lite' on this unexplained phenomenon? How can I kill my appetite?"

Our Lady of Weight Loss replies, "Instead of trying to kill your appetite and treating it as though it were your mortal enemy, how about making friends with your appetite?"

Consider making appetite your friend. Truly, there's no need for such violence. A valuable, intelligent friend who you pay attention to! Be grateful that you have an appetite! It's 'normal!' Even the skinny-minnies out there have appetites, don't they?

In the past, you've paid attention to only half the signal from your appetite. The "I'm hungry. Feed me." part. That's the part of the signal that tells you to eat. (Nothing wrong with your hearing! Again, it's 'normal.')

When that feeling of hunger first starts to disappear, your appetite says, "I'm satisfied." It's important that you pay attention to that piece of your friend's advice. Did you note that I said when that feeling of hunger FIRST starts to disappear!?

That's right. You want to stop eating long before you are full. The chances are that once you hit full, you have probably grossly overeaten and remorse is right around the corner.

(Personal Confession: Before Our Lady of Weight Loss entered my life and introduced me to my friend, Appetite, I would eat until I couldn't breathe. Gross, indeed! And dangerous, too!!)

Pay attention. You don't want to feel full; you do want to feel satisfied. Your appetite is your friend. Your appetite tells you when you are hungry and when you are satisfied.

Listen to your appetite. Your eating is no longer driven by emotions. Now that you have met your friend, Appetite, you can be in close contact with her as she guides you to 'satisfied.'

New Point of View: Your appetite doesn't need to be killed off. There's no place or need for violence in the Land of Permanent Fat Removal! I hope this explains the unexplainable!
