“I was watching a local news report and they were reporting in Nashville, where I live, that 12 girls under the age of 18 were found in the same apartment with just dirty mattresses on the floor. They had just broken up this brothel and it was one mile from my front door,” says singer Natalie Grant in a recent video about sex trafficking in the United States. “It IS happening and not only is it happening, it is growing at an alarming rate.”

So disgusted and shocked by these developments so close to her own home, Grant is partnering with Word Films to present the documentary, “In Plain Site: It’s Happening in Your City” as Executive Producer and Narrator for the project.

With a goal of being released in stores nationwide in 2014, “In Plain Sight” will take introduce viewers to five different people living in five different cities who all have two things in common:

  1. They are unaware of the crimes being committed in their own backyard.
  2. They have more power to help stop these crimes than they thought.

The documentary will not only focus on the negative, but also the positive including information on five non-profit organizations which exist to help rescue and care for these victims. Each of these organizations belongs to the Abolition International Shelter Association founded in 2005 by Grant. Viewers will learn how these visionary groups are addressing the challenge with “hands-on,” practical solutions.

As you can imagine, producing a film of this magnitude is not an inexpensive venture. It is estimated that the documentary will cost about $75,000 of which only slightly more of $6,000 has been raised with just 40 more days left to reach their goal. The project is listed on Idiegogo.com so you can get involved too. Donors can “pick a perk” for any donation amount they choose from a simple “thank you” to VIP treatment at the movie premiere with Natalie Grant. (Visit storiesoffreedom.com to learn more.)

Fortunately, Grant is not doing this alone. She has the help of David Trotter, a documentary filmmaker, speaker and

writer who recently produced the film “Mother India: Life Through the Eyes of the Orphan,” which won the title of “Best Short Documentary” at the 2012 San Diego Christian Film Festival.

“In Plain Sight” seeks to raise awareness of the thousands of women and children who are forced, coerced, or deceived into the commercial sex trade each year in the United States. This problem isn’t just limited to the “usual suspects” of Las Vegas, Los Angeles and New York. It is increasing in areas across the states from Sacramento to Baltimore. Maybe in your own city.

Here is Natalie and David’s three step plan of attack:

  1. Creation of the In Plain Site website: A source of information regarding sex trafficking in the U.S. and what it will take to create the documentary.
  2. The Actual Documentary: Creating and releasing “In Plain Site” to theaters nationwide next year.
  3. The “In Plain Site” Music Album: Word Records will release this album of original songs from well-known artists in 2014. All proceeds from the sale of the album will go toward Abolition International.
