Mark Wahlberg is a movie star, producer of the HBO series “Entourage,” and a Catholic, and fame and faith seem to overlap–even at Mass. “I go to church and people ask me if they can be on ‘Entourage,’ what’s gonna happen. I go to church to worship, I don’t go to church to talk about it,” the celebrity tells a fan website.
“The stuff that I did with my entourage back in the day is stuff that I’m not proud of and I’m asking forgiveness for; I don’t want things brought up in church…I get scripts, resumes, books–people tried to come up to me with a children’s book before and I wouldn’t take it. They got upset with me. This is church.”
Not fair. But, as Wahlberg notes, “if you go to church in Beverly Hills, those kind of things happen.”
On the other hand, he’s lucky some Catholics don’t fry him. Wahlberg just last month confirmed that he and his longtime girlfriend, Rhea Durham, are to be married–finally. The couple have been together since 2001–they have year old daughter Ella, two year old son Michael and newborn son Brendan–but Mark had some commitment issues. Not anymore.
The wedding next August will be “in a Catholic church, small, family only, no media!”

Actually, I’m impressed by his statement. What a positive statement of faith from a Catholic in one of the most sinful milieus on earth–Hollywood. We should always be tolerant of his marital status considering how far he’s come, and where he came from. Jesus would have been — and is. He’s getting married, what more can you ask?

Let’s see. The guy who played the porn star Dirk Diggler in Boogie Nights leaving us all a lasting view of his privates (or so I am told), who produces an HBO series glorifying all seven of the deadly sins and thinking up new ones, who plays characters who whore and kill and communicate with the dead, he’s a poster boy for Catholic faith?
Yep. Typical of the Church’s true sensibilities.

I’m impressed in just the opposite manner. Wahlberg rose to fame playing a porn star, produces a series that exults in the seven deadly sins, glorifies drug use in his latest hit, has lived in sin for years and is thinking about a Catholic marriage, maybe, or maybe not, next year. I don’t believe he deserves a pass on his present sins just because his earlier sins may have been more blatant.
It is utterly inappropriate for anyone to be peddling TV scripts in mass. But perhaps Wahlberg wouldn’t be approached if his personal life gave the slightest hint his spiritual life was real.

Don’t read too much into any of it. No one can know his heart but the Lord. He’s just a poor sinner, like the rest of us.
