Can Catholics read the Bible?

Tuesday December 9, 2008

Bible Story cover.jpgThe short answer is, Yes, finally. The somewhat longer answer, as I detail in this cover story for America magazine, "A Literate Church: The State of Catholic Bible Study Today," is "Yes--but they're not doing it enough."

Check it out, let me know of any Bible study stories you have--successful, or not. No better season to begin serious study than Advent.

I remember buying the entire set of individual Collegeville commentaries almost 20 years ago when my parish expressed interest in starting up Little Rock's program ... and never did.

Instead, those booklets came in handy during the four years of Denver Catholic Biblical School (parish-based), available from Paulist Press (not the revised program by Tim Grey, et. al.) I won't mark in my Bible but those tiny Collegeville booklets are marked through & through!

I am thankfully in an established Catholic study right now, reading Paul's letters in canonical order this year. Studying the Bible with a small group has taught me some patience and some humility, some gentleness towards those who join up having very little experience.
