Win some, lose some: Lindsay Lohan, born Catholic, to become Jewish

posted by David Gibson | 11:36am Tuesday March 3, 2009

Lindsey goes to shul.jpgSo we get Newt, and now lose Lindsay. I’m still trying to weigh the merits of the swap. Here’s the story via The Daily Mail:

Lindsay Lohan is converting to Judaism in a bid to prove her devotion to Jewish girlfriend Samantha Ronson.

Although raised a Catholic, the 22-year-old star announced she was planning to change her faith on her Facebook page.

After jetting into London last week, Lindsay joined girlfriend Samantha at the Bar Mitzvah of the DJ’s half-brother Joshua Ronson at the Westminster Synagogue on Saturday.

[snip]

Her estranged father Michael Lohan rediscovered his relationship with God during a period in jail and now works as a minister.

Michael said: ‘She’s exploring Judaism right now. She’s explored the Church of Scientology, she tried Kabbalah, and now this.

‘I think it’s just another phase. But either way, she’s involving God in her life, and I’m happy about that.’

All yours, my elder brothers in the faith.

Moving on, and many, many thanks...
So...my recent vacation and related absences also coincided with an offer from PoliticsDaily.com to cover religion for them, as editor Melinda Henneberger announces here in her roundup on the site's very successful first 100 days. That means, in short, that I'll have to sign off from blogging h

Calvin at 500, Calvinism 2.0
If you thought you knew John Calvin--who turned 500 last week--you probably don't know enough. For example, that he was French, born Jean Cauvin. And if he was in fact scandalized by dancing, he was also a lot more complex than that. I explored the new look Calvin in an essay at PoliticsDaily, "Patr

Apologia pro vita sua...Kinda
In my defense, I've had computer outages and family reunions and a few days of single-parenthood, which is always a bracing reminder of what many parents go through all the time. And this weekend it's off for a week's vacation. Anyway, hence the long absence. Apologies to those who have chec

Signs of the times: Obama's eye
Yes, this photo of Obama ostensibly eyeing a young woman (apparently a 17-year-old delegate from Brazil--where are her parents?!) at the G-8 Summit is the hottest Google search item. And of course the question of what Obama was thinking is a leading Fox News story. So it goes, even as the

She should join Scientology instead. It would serve her right.

Ms. Lohan has had problems with substance abuse and obvious problems with her relationships with her family. I hope she finds or keeps a relationship with God, or a system of belief that would provide her relief to her suffering, keep her from harm, and allow her to provide service to others. I hope she find finds herself to be kind and compassionate. I wish her a rich and rewarding life worth living.

I agree with Beth. Ronson seems to have been a better influence on LiLo than her own parents ever were. If Judaism brings her closer to God than her family’s example did, she’s in a better place.
But if her conversion is just for show, it wouldn’t matter whether she stayed Catholic or became a Buddhist nun….

I hope she finds what she is looking for. If converting to Judaism gives her the answers to her questions, that’s good. There is no single religion that works for everyone.

Ditto Pagansister. There are many paths up the mountain.
David Lipschitz,
I feel for this poor child. She has not been served well by the adults in her life, the Catholic adults especially. I just hope that she doesn’t replace a cultural Catholicism with a cultural Judaism. I hope that this move has some effect on her moral compass and places her in touch with her dignity. She’s still too young and badly damaged to be ‘deserving of scientology’.

Lohan doesn’t need a change of religion, she needs a change of heart.

Well jack, it seems that according to another article posted today on this site, the RCC is rapidly losing folks…even in a state where it was once dominate..RI (I live in RI). Yes, updating would be good, but that’s no likely to happen anytime soon.
