Gingrich as the standard-bearer of the Republican religious bloc? He just became Catholic, but he can still rouse ‘em like the Baptist he was raised, as Dan Gilgoff writes at USNews. At a recent ”Rediscovering God in America” conference in Virginia Beach, Newt was testifying. Some tidbits:
–We are in a period when we are surrounded by paganism. And paganism is on offence and that’s why our first great challenge is spiritual.
–Reignite in people an understanding that the heart of your life is subordination to God, the heart of your life is seeking God’s will and that all of us are weak and vulnerable, all of us make mistakes, but that all are welcomed by a loving God.
–Reach out to everybody in the country who is not yet saved and…help them understand the spiritual basis of a creator-endowed society.

Note to the GOP:
You are who you invite to the table over and over and over again. It’s one thing to allow people to attend a function, but when they are at the head of the table, the guest of honor, the guest speaker, they are going to be who defines you.

For decades – basically since Lyndon Johnson grew a pair and stood firm on human rights for Negroes – the Republicans have drawn in one-issue voters (racists, anti-choice, anti-human status for gays and transgender).
Now that they are out of power, these one-issue voters are beginning to realize that the Republicans played them.
That is good.
What is bad, is that the gays who voted for Obama are beginning to realize that we were played, too.
Obama and the Democrats know that we will never vote for our own murderers and torturers.
The only hope is for the Republican party to return to being a party of moderates and intellectuals, so we have a true choice.
Instead, sadly, the party is drifting ever more to the wing-nut right.

The more polarizing and antagonistic these “potential” spokespersons for the GOP become the more and more likely it makes it for Obama/Biden to expect another victory in 2012, and I’m fine with that! Let the games continue! =P
It’s kind of sad though, as people have said already here, unless they moderate their image and deviate from solely focusing on social issues they have no real hope or viability as a Party of the future…

Who speaks for the GOP today? Let’s see…a recently retired war criminal (albeit a socially progressive one), a hate radio jock, and a couple of religious wing nuts. Their core constituency seems to be the likes of Scott Roeder.

What is also sad is that people like my husband, a moderate Republican, cannot have his voice heard over the loud-mouths. He in no way thinks like them, yet he gets lumped with them all of the time just by party affiliation. He is also not alone…there are many like him and I hope that they can gain the steam they need.

When I see Republicans on TV, I see Judd Gregg and Mitch McConnell trying to slow our slide into socialism.
Republicans AREN’T only talking about faith and morals, although everyone is latching onto these hot button issues.
Stay true to your principles, Republicans. (You’re in a mess because you strayed under W.) Right and wrong don’t change. Prove yourself, and the people will return.

Do you really think the voters are going to believe that this enormous deficit and the largest number of parasites sucking on the public’s teat ever are the result of Bush acting alone?
You seriously need to wake up and smell the coffee.
The Republican party of Eisenhower was one I could frequently have supported (especially on gay rights). Right up through the Nixon era, the Republican party represented an intellectual and academic base which was worthy of attention.
Today?
Please.
We Democrats seriously need a genuine opposition. Your mentality is not helping.

Honestly, do you realize just how many fiscal conservatives like me have been forced to abandon your party over the last decades because we are gay? Even the Republican party admits that they lost at least 4.7 million gay votes to Obama. Would have saved the senate and might have swung the election.
How many women won’t vote for your party because of your position on a woman’s right to choose?
Put away the tired old words and pay attention. This is serious business here.
