Moving on, and many, many thanks...
So...my recent vacation and related absences also coincided with an offer from PoliticsDaily.com to cover religion for them, as editor Melinda Henneberger announces here in her roundup on the site's very successful first 100 days. That means, in short, that I'll have to sign off from blogging h

Calvin at 500, Calvinism 2.0
If you thought you knew John Calvin--who turned 500 last week--you probably don't know enough. For example, that he was French, born Jean Cauvin. And if he was in fact scandalized by dancing, he was also a lot more complex than that. I explored the new look Calvin in an essay at PoliticsDaily, "Patr

Apologia pro vita sua...Kinda
In my defense, I've had computer outages and family reunions and a few days of single-parenthood, which is always a bracing reminder of what many parents go through all the time.
And this weekend it's off for a week's vacation.
Anyway, hence the long absence. Apologies to those who have chec

The Christian right, and in particular Catholic conservatives and most of the cardinals these days, speak out of both sides of their mouths just like any Islamic terrorists. I’ve not seen any truly unconditional denunciations of this acts. The few that have bothered to say anything say “we don’t condone murder….but…”
Every day they preach using the language of hatred and righteous anger. By example, look at the extremem rhetoric used in the Obama/Notre Dame incident. Opponents to his visit carried on like Satan himself was coming to town. This wasn’t just from loons like Randall. This was the cardinals, in many cases. You can’t spend 364 days a year stoking an atmosphere which encourages muder and then (credibly) denounce it when it happens. At best, the pro-life crowd has been grossly irresponsible and unaware of the power of its own words. At worst, it is tacitly approving of terror to advance an agenda that cannot be won in its entirety by lawful means.

Oh yes, all those hateful Cardinals who wrote letters to say that Catholic Universities should follow the request of the bishops and not honor politicians whose policies violate Catholic teaching. I don’t think any of the Cardinals came to the Catholic protest INSIDE Notre Dame with the bishop, some of the faculty, graduating students and their families. That protest included a Mass, a few speeches, and prayer for all concerned. Shocking.
