Facing Diabetes With Gratitude

posted by Susan Diamond

Is it be possible to celebrate holidays without the focus being food? “Sacre Bleu!” As Pepe LePew would say. Yes, it’s shocking to imagine the Thanksgiving holiday without the marshmallows on the sweet potatoes or the pumpkin pie. But for Gina who has diabetes, she’s turning to gratitude on the fourth Thursday in November.

Gina is one of the 26 million Americans living with diabetes. She’s thankful she has the disease under control. Her diet, medication and monitoring is a constant struggle. Yet somehow, she manages to stay positive and live a healthful life with the disease. It‘s not the same for everyone.

November is Diabetes Awareness Month and organizers would like us to think about the statistics:

-Every 17 seconds, someone is diagnosed with diabetes.

-Diabetes kills more people each year than breast cancer and AIDS combined.

-Recent estimates project that as many as 1 in 3 American adults will have diabetes in 2050.

It’s not only up to the doctors and researchers to stop diabetes. It’s important for the faith communities to learn about the disease, advocate and pray. Prayers for a cure are needed. We all have a hotline to heaven, so make the call on behalf of seeing an end to diabetes in our lifetime.
