A Prayer for Whitney Houston

posted by nsymmonds | 1:02pm Thursday September 3, 2009

In the Peach Buzz section of the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Tyler Perry, a friend of Whitney Houston, asked fans of Houston to pray for her. He suggested that as they went out to buy her latest album, “I Look to You” in stores and online, whisper a prayer for her because “She is looking to you and to God for all her strength.”

Admittedly, since talk of her making a comeback started rising and since I’ve heard two of the singles from her latest album, I have not been convinced that this is her time. I have certainly spent my fair share of time trashing her latest single, “Million Dollar Bill” because I think it’s beneathe her and what I believe she is capable of doing as an artist. But in the midst of all of this, I had not even taken the time to think about what a huge step she is making to fully step back into the spotlight that she once stole at the peak of her career. The same spotlight that burned her when she was in the midst of trials and tribulations in her personal life. I didn’t stop for a second to think about what she is facing and that it is bigger than the music she creates for mass consumption. She IS first and foremost, a human being. God’s creation. And like all of us she makes mistakes, has learned from them, and is hoping to move on. But she can only truly move on when the she stops being reminded of the mistakes. So this is my public apology to Whitney Houston for being a critic and not a Christian with compassion as my primary goal. And as such, I would like all who would to join me in prayer for Whitney Houston.

Heavenly Father,

I first ask that you would forgive me for being a critic of someone I don’t even know. Someone who you have gifted with incredible talents, but at the same time, she is human and makes mistakes. You said that we all have sinned and fallen short of your glory, yet, with undeserved kindness, you declare us righteous. So I pray that as Whitney Houston steps back into the spotlight, you would remind her of her own righteousness and let that righteousness guide her to greater works. May you light her path and show her the direction to go as she enters this new season of life. Though there may be some that will criticize her, let that criticism not discourage her. Let her hear only from those who are speaking by your divine inspiration. Let her accept the criticisms you need her to accept. May she seek your face and look to the hills from which cometh her help and remember to run to you. You’ve given her many songs to sing that tell of your grace and your mercy, now let her believe those things in her heart and respond to it with her life. Be her protector, keeping her away from harmful people and danger. Be a provider, making ways out of no way. Be her comforter in the hard days to come. And be her peace so that when it is all said and done, she remembers to look to you.

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen

Good prayer. I actually just got out of a staff meeting where we were making fun of Whitney…for that unfortunate performance on Good Morning America. But I agree, people make mistakes and should be allowed to change.

Thank you for the prayer. I agree – if Christians are not willing to extend second chances to others, who will? I personally, am rooting for Ms. Houston.

Prayer is ral and yields results. I have been praying for Whitney Houston for a long time. I never could understand how people could take joy out of someone’s downfall. That is just showing no humanity.
I got her cd and I enjoy it. There is something on it for everyone and it is a clean cd with great lyrics except for the last song, ‘Salute’ which is obviously about her ex-husband.
May God continue to bless her and I also want to say a prayer for
MAia Campbell that she finds her way too. I’ve followed Whitney for years and what I always admired about her was whether she was performing in the US or Spain or Russia she always sang a Gospel song and proclaimed her love for God unashamedly.
Welcome back Ms. Houston.

I must first commend anyone willing to give a public apology regarding their sinful thoughts and words toward another human being. Certainly, we have all been guilty of the same thing to some extent.
Thank-you for reminding each of us who God calls us to be, Whitney represents so many people in regard to struggle and conflict. I pray we each allow ourselves to be humbled and reminded that we all fall short of the glory of God.
We contribute to the downfall of someone when we speak anything but love toward them. We contribute to our own downfall when we fail to demonstrate love in our thoughts, words, and actions in general. From celebrities our society loves to bash to the cashier at the grocery store whom we may find ourselves feeling ill will toward we separate ourselves from our Heavenly Father when we allow thoughts, words and actions toward anyone that are removed from a place of love and forgiveness.
May we each make the choice to live from a place of love and hold ourselves accountable by holding our thoughts captive before we express anything but love in our words our actions.

Through it all I never lost faith that he would lift Whitney back up out of her troubles and let her light shine again. I kept her lifted up in Prayer and I did not listen to the words of the enemy saying she would never sing again. I had Faith that Whitney would find her wait through all the pain and sorrow she was going through. She sang in her song her strength that she never crumbled, I knew that even all that was being said about her that one day she would prevail. Thanks you Lord for helping her find her strength, and helping her beautiful Daughter that stood by her Mother, Lord keep them Praying. Whitney’s Mother never left her and she never lost faith in her Daughter, that is one reason that Whitney came through it all. Lord we ask that you help her Lord as you elevate her back to her place in this world. Lord take care of her Mother, because there is nothing like a Praying Mother. Lord take care of Whitney and her daughter and keep them safe and well. This album is an album of pain and freedom, just wait and watch for the next one. It is going to be one of Greatness !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Much praise to the author of this prayer. I have never seen a writer recognize publicly that he has overlooked an important fact in reporting about individual performances. We are all God’s children, including Whitney Houston. She is an amazing talent who is returning from a dark place. The journey has not been easy nor is it over. I celebrate her courage and her return to public life. With God by her side and family support I believe she will be embraced by the public and welcomed with open arms. She has truly been missed. Welcome back, Whitney!!

Dearest Whitney – the most beautiful singer in my world -
You have had to live your life before the world, and truly none of us would pass this test. I thank God for you, would “kill” to have lunch with you, I pray for you all the time, and I’ll never stop. Truly, you have nothing to prove to the world. Our lives and our struggles are between us and God, only you are forced into so much more. He “knit you together in your mother’s womb” and you are “fearfully and wonderfully made”. What a blessing you are to me .. and I will always love you … Joanna
