A Pledge to “One Nation Under one Supreme Entity for Every Citizen…”

posted by Mark Herringshaw

Hmm…

The Devotion School, a “public elementary educational institution” in Brookline, Mass., is asking parents to fill out permission slips before their children can participate in a weekly recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance beginning in January.

Gerardo Martinez, the principal sent a letter home to parents saying, “I urge you to have a conversation as a family to help your children understand why I will be reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and to support them in feeling comfortable and confident in the decision on whether or not to participate.”

Martinez attached a form to be returned to the school asking parents to check either: “Yes, my child will participate in the weekly Pledge of Allegiance” or “No, my child will not participate in the weekly Pledge of Allegiance.”

The letter packet also included a copy of the Pledge of Allegiance with a annotation defining the words “under God” as meaning “there is one Supreme entity for every citizen.”

What’s next, permission slips to say “Merry Christmas” in school… Oh, wait, we’ve already banished Christmas to from the halls of public school…

“Supreme Entity, help us!”

Simple solution: tell everyone that “under God” is a new addition; the original pledge didn’t have it. And tell them they can use either version they want.
And he’s right about there being a “supreme entity” for every (believing) citizen. Or in some cases multiple more-or-less supreme entities. That’s just a fact.
