Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has stepped down. After weeks of popular upheaval in the nation, Mubarak has handed control of the country to the military. Vice President Omar Suleiman made the announcement today in an address broadcasted state television.

The news has triggered a wave of jubilation throughout Cairo’s Tehrir Square. Tens of thousands of anti-government protesters have gathered there demanding Mubarak’s ouster in the hours following his public address yesterday in which he failed to resign as speculated.

“God, guide Egypt in this tentative and dangerous time of transition. Do not let this precious nation fall into chaos. Keep Egypt safe from the hand and spiritual forces intent on bringing confusion and disarray. In the Name of the Prince of Peace, we say, ‘Peace in Egypt.’”

Much better. And now would be a good time to make a humble public apology to us all for trashing our president in your previous screed.
George W. Bush and all those Republicans took us into an unimaginably stupid and expensive invasion of Iraq, ostensibly to encourage democracy in the Middle East. Did you oppose that? It’s cost us over a trillion dollars and uncounted lives and limbs and failed miserably to create a functioning state. This is a democracy brought on by the people and it cost us nothing, yet you opposed it.
You need to just stop and think about your actions and vow to do better.

Yes, I also call for an apology from the writers of this column !! Your total disrespect for the President of the US is disgusting. You didn’t even allow for events to play out. Do you expect anyone to respect your opinions now?

For a more balanced, and infinitely more expert view of President Obama’s role here’s a short article.
I have complained to Beliefnet about Herringshaw’s last post. I suggest anyone else who was disturbed by it do so, too. This man is no addition to the website. He’s a subtraction.

Thanks for the article, nnmns. I do have to question your assertion of “more balanced”, given that Lynch feels the need to slight Bush w/ this passage:

By the way, for those keeping score in the “peacefully removing Arab dictators” game, it’s now Obama 2, Bush 0.

That’s a redflag bias alert if there ever was one. I do agree that Mark Herringshaw was a bit hard on Obama 2 posts ago (he’d probably willingly concede this much). I agree that the Iraq War was a disaster as well, but one thing positive I can say about Bush is that he has a sense of decency not to trash the sitting President. Something Obama would do well to learn is reciprocity in regards to respect for the previous administration ( . . . and perhaps he will with age & experience).
Another pertinent passage from the article is the one immediately preceding the excerpt I quoted:

The outcome will be judged on what emerges over months and years to come, not only by today’s exhilerating turn of events. I hope that everyone thrilled by the downfall of the dictator remains attentive and committed to helping bring about the democratic transformation which Egyptians deserve, which serves real American interests, and which could help change the entire region.

I share Lynch’s sentiments . . . and we shouldn’t have to tacitly keep supporting dictatorial figures, whether they be Shaws, Sadams, Mubaraks, or what have you. The “lesser of two evils” usually comes back to bite us in some way or another.
Now that I got that out of my system, nnmns, I’ll leave you to enjoy the rest of your Sabbath (LOL!) ;-)
Cheers.

Thanks Tom. I agree the future will determine how this comes out, but it hasn’t cost us any money or lives we’re way ahead of the Iraq debacle.
If Mark would agree with us on his previous article he just needs to apologize, to us and to his president. That’s easy for a humble person.
Roger Cohen had another good article in the NYT:

This is the critical opportunity Egypt now presents. Islamist radicalism has thrived on the American double standards evident in strong support for the likes of Mubarak’s regime. It has prospered from the very brutal repression that was supposedly essential to stop the jihadists. And it has benefited from the reduction of tens of millions of Arab citizens to mere objects, shorn of dignity, and so more inclined to seek meaning in absolutist movements of violence.

And that’s just the kind of dictator Mark Herringshaw was supporting. Till his subjects righteously rose up and threw him out. How Christian is that?
