George W. Bush and all those Republicans took us into an unimaginably stupid and expensive invasion of Iraq, ostensibly to encourage democracy in the Middle East. Did you oppose that? It’s cost us over a trillion dollars and uncounted lives and limbs and failed miserably to create a functioning state. This is a democracy brought on by the people and it cost us nothing, yet you opposed it.
You need to just stop and think about your actions and vow to do better.

That’s a redflag bias alert if there ever was one. I do agree that Mark Herringshaw was a bit hard on Obama 2 posts ago (he’d probably willingly concede this much). I agree that the Iraq War was a disaster as well, but one thing positive I can say about Bush is that he has a sense of decency not to trash the sitting President. Something Obama would do well to learn is reciprocity in regards to respect for the previous administration ( . . . and perhaps he will with age & experience).
Another pertinent passage from the article is the one immediately preceding the excerpt I quoted:

The outcome will be judged on what emerges over months and years to come, not only by today’s exhilerating turn of events. I hope that everyone thrilled by the downfall of the dictator remains attentive and committed to helping bring about the democratic transformation which Egyptians deserve, which serves real American interests, and which could help change the entire region.

I share Lynch’s sentiments . . . and we shouldn’t have to tacitly keep supporting dictatorial figures, whether they be Shaws, Sadams, Mubaraks, or what have you. The “lesser of two evils” usually comes back to bite us in some way or another.

Thanks Tom. I agree the future will determine how this comes out, but it hasn’t cost us any money or lives we’re way ahead of the Iraq debacle.
If Mark would agree with us on his previous article he just needs to apologize, to us and to his president. That’s easy for a humble person.
Roger Cohen had another good article in the NYT:
