Just When You Thought You Were an American… Conservatives Say Not So Fast.

posted by Burns Strider | 8:52pm Monday October 20, 2008

Governor Palin and her brand of Republicanism are about to overcook my grits.

She and those who drink from the same mug have decided that you are not a real American, maybe you are even anti-American, if you either don’t have the same views as they do or you are from the wrong part of the nation, or both… I’m a little confused as to the specific criteria.

I think I may be fine since I was born and raised in Mississippi even though I have lived in Washington, DC for quite a few years.

I worry, though, about my two boys. They were both born and are being raised inside the beltway so I don’t think they are fully American in the eyes of Governor Palin, Congressman Robin Hayes (R-NC), Congresswoman Michelle Bachman (R-MN) and all their friends. And this is what is scorching my grits.

But first, this is what Governor Palin said late last week:

“We believe that the best of America is in these small towns that we get to visit, and in these wonderful little pockets of what I call the real America, being here with all of you hard working very patriotic, um, very, um, pro-America areas of this great nation. This is where we find the kindness and the goodness and the courage of everyday Americans.”

What does she call Brazil, MS? Is it real America or does that community’s name disqualify the Brazilians of the Mississippi Delta?

Then Governor Palin’s spokesperson added this on October 18:

[Pfotenhauer] acknowledged [McCain's] difficulties in Northern Virginia but said the region is not “real Virginia.” She added, “The rest of the state, real Virginia, if you will, I think will be very responsive to Senator McCain’s message,” Nancy Pfotenhauer said.

So, if you are for Senator McCain or from an area largely supporting Senator McCain they you are “real.”

Over the weekend North Carolina Republican Robin Hayes said this:

“Liberals hate real Americans that work and achieve and believe in God.”

Okay… so if you are a liberal you hate real Americans who work and believe in God. What if you are also from northern Virginia, don’t work and don’t believe in God? Do you have to move to another country?

And Congresswoman Michelle Bachman, the Republican of Minnesota, on Chris Matthews this past Friday emphatically pontificated the following:

“Barack Obama didn’t have a mild association with Bill Ayers, he had a very strong association with Bill Ayers.” She then went on to say, “I’m very concerned that he may have anti-American views.”

So being 8 years-old at some point in the 1970′s may be a bad thing because a guy you would meet decades later was doing bad things during the disco era. I often wonder if Senator Obama and I ever listened to My Sharona at the same time. But what if Senator Obama, Bill Ayers and I listened to My Sharona at exactly the same time? Does that then disqualify my Mississippi roots and make me anti-American?

Governor Palin, Congressman Hayes and Congresswoman Bachman need to check their language. And they need to re-examine the meaning, beauty and greatness of our nation.

We are a patchwork quilt, a Baptist blanket, of families and communities that have come from all over the globe to become real Americans.

Our ancestors may have arrived prior to the First Continental Congress or our families may have immigrated through Ellis Island in the last century. Some of us may have risked our very lives on sinking rafts and some of us may have risked great fortunes. But, we are all real Americans.

My little boys are very much American. My first grader has been singing “This Land is Your Land” to me. He has been learning it each morning in the DC Public Schools. They play a lot of soccer, I prefer baseball but you should have heard them cheering for Michael Phelps during the Summer Olympics.

I fear that somehow Governor Palin, Congressman Hayes, Congresswoman Bachman and their ideological friends have allowed scales to cover their eyes. They have been led astray by the sound of their own politics and they sadly find exceptionalism only from their own voices, their own mirror image of America.

Think about how limiting this is… think about all the potential and real American dreams that would never be realized through such a narrow vision of our great nation. They have allowed the values we hold dear, as one nation, to be tossed to the ditch in place for the rigid orthodoxy they prefer to proclaim.

Over 20 years ago, the late, great Congresswoman Barbara Jordan was speaking to the Baptist Joint Committee and was asked how to properly articulate values in government. Her response went something like this (and I paraphrase but wouldn’t you love to hear her voice right now say these words):

“You would be well to pursue your causes with vigor, while remembering that you are a servant of God, not a spokesperson for God and remembering that God may choose to bless an opposing point of view for reasons that have not been revealed to you.”

I hope Governor Palin, Congressman Hayes, Congresswoman Bachman and all their friends will stop their divisive, ugly cultural warfare… it so belittles them as they sound like a throwback to earlier elections and instead embrace our real American values and find all Americans to be real and all pockets to be real American places.

Palin, and her “real Americans,” are real in the same sense as reality TV is reflective of human beings going about living their daily lives.

With all do respect to Governor Palin, which is very little if any , I am a “Real American.” Just because a person happens to live in a large liberal city, vote a different way, or have a different point of view, that does not make that person any less of an American. What does make you an American? Paying taxes? Well I pay my taxes. That is more than you can say for your “Joe the Plumber” which Senator McCain and you held up as an example of the hardworking Americans that you and your party represent. So does that mean your party represents tax evading citizens that don’t want the taxes that they DON’T pay raised. I think Governor Palin and Senator McCain would do well to just do one thing, and that is look at the name of this country we live in. The UNITED States of America. It is as simple as that. We are all in this together and the idea put forth in the Constitution is “… to form a more perfect union,” not tear it apart.
With every slight, slur, or innuendo thrown by the McCain/Palin campaign to promote divisiveness, or instill fear and hate is one step further from the ideals OUR founding fathers, and every other American soldier that has fought and died for. To continue to do so is a disgrace to their memory and sacrifice.

It doesn’t take a heck of a lot of “reading into” to gather that Palin sees small-town/rural America (in which I also live, and which I love very much) as “real America” and urban America as something less than that; if not “fake America”, at least “not-quite-as-real America”. What else are we to gather? I can only imagine that there are plenty of urban conservatives and Republicans who hear that and say, “Hey–wait a minute!” Judging by the number of conservatives that are endorsing Obama, both McCain and Palin are doing a pretty good job of alienating their own people.
The issue that was mentioned in an earlier comment is one that I also need to mention, and that’s Todd Palin’s association with the AIP. Why does Gov. Palin get a pass on that? Obama’s wife has been hammered on, and still is getting it, for one comment she made months ago. Why aren’t people talking about how Palin’s husband apparently hates America? With Todd, we’re not talking about one comment; we’re talking about a long-term very public association with an organization that wants its state to secede from the Union. Maybe if Palin’s handlers would allow her to hold an honest-to-goodness press conference, questions like that could be asked. Not answered, perhaps, but at least put into play.

Being American means many things, but also taking responsibility for your actions.
Feelings – are they based on fact, or simply what you feel at that very moment? Can feelings be manipulated? Yes, feelings can be manipulated.
True, even 30+ years after the event, William Ayers is still a bad man. He got off on a technicality, not because what he did was okay. Keep in mind, though, that as recent as 2001, it was William Ayers who announced he wished he’d “done more,” relating to the the rest of us he is truly unrepentent, even after all these years.
During this important time, it is crucial that people vote based on research and fact (be skeptical of ads and media). Recent Obama ads passively attack McCain by saying that McCain wants to cut Medicare, based on third party information that came from another 3rd party. Could that be because its untrue? The claim is untrue, McCain is not cutting Medicare. He plans to fund tax cuts through reducing the size of government (not Medicare).
That’s why it’s important we, as Americans, check the facts (not the opinions) – check the voting records – check the historical ACTIONS of each candidate, check out their voting records. Be responsible as a voter.
But why? The next President of the United States will be filling federal jobs – including courts, FBI, and other of our nation’s fundamental pieces. These people will sit in that role until they die or step down. That means they will be in the role long after the President elected in 2008 is out of office.
The United States offers more opportunity than any other country in the world provides. A candidate that says to his followers ” argue with them (non-Obama supporters), get in their face!” loses face in my eyes, but so does a candidate that destroys a man like Joe the Plumber for simply asking a question. Would you call that “Freedom of speech” if you were destroyed for asking a question?
I pray we each vote our conscience with grounded facts, not feelings. Keep this the greatest nation in the world, one of opportunity and the pursuit of happiness.

What “destroys a man like Joe the Plumber”?
Answer: it is Sam, the non-licensed plumber, who lied about his economic situation, who failed to pay his taxes, and who got trotted out before the nation on the third Presidential debate by John McCain. After being mentioned about 20 times by McCain, the media decided to ground their story in facts. The facts in this case left egg all over the face of Sam the non-licensed plumber–that McCain mistakenly called “Joe the Plumber,” while retailing Sam’s lie about the impact of Obama’s proposed tax cuts on him.

I happen to think all of these men are fools – Jeremiah Wright, for all the good that he’s done, engages in demagoguery, William Ayers is more or less a lunatic, at least when it comes to politics, if not to education, I can’t even watch Michael Moore’s movies because he bugs me so much, and I think Sean Penn is an occasionally good, though overrated actor who has a right to his political opinions even though I don’t agree with most of them.
But, if I thought all these men were great, I would be just as much of an American as you. As a moderate, I am aware that there are Americans who think that they will win points for being even more down on America than anti-American foreigners. I might think these folks are fools, but that doesn’t mean they are truly anti-American. Just (giving them the benefit of the doubt) perhaps naive and foolish.
One of the things that bothers me the most about the tone of most of Sarah Palin’s rallies is that acting the part of the demagogue, but with (apparently) so little knowledge of history or of what she is doing that she doesn’t even see the dangers of what she is doing. I hope it is out of ignorance and naivete, because if it is not, she is a much more conniving and dangerous person than I think. We need leadership at this time, not demagoguery.

In all defferance to Ray, its not a matter of understanding or misunderstanding, its a matter of speaking in a language that doesn’t allow for misinterpretation. Say what you mean and mean what you say. Given that Gov. Palin probably meant something similar to what you understand her to have said. Keep in mind that this is a person who is running for election to the 2nd highest post in the land, and, who could very well lead this country at some point if she were elected. Out of the 20 people who had responded prior to this response, you were the only one who “understands”. Out of the 20 countries (give or take a few) who would be attending the next nuclear disarmament summit, which one would you pick to have “understand” what our President was saying?
There are two distinct criteria (among many) that I would require in a qualified candidate for any public office; the ability to understand what needs to be said, and, the ability to clearly communicate that information. I don’t think Gov. Palin has either of those criteria.

Can anyone give me a good definition of a “real American.”
I have been watching a lot of news lately, liberal and conservative, and both seem to scrambling to shout from the rooftops that they are real Americans. Why? Isn’t this divisive?
Isn’t our country a little too big and a little too diverse to have a laundry list of adjectives to pick from to call yourself American. If I fit . . . um . . . 3 of the following list of adjectives then then I am a real American.
1. Pride
2. Right not to be proud
3. Knows and believes in the first Amendment
4. Has never read the Constitution but still a Citizen.
5. Free
6. Slave to the Government’s whimsical addiction to Wall Street
7. Christian
8. Right not be Christian and not be prosecuted
“Um, well, I live in Berkeley, CA so I will pick 2, 6 & 8.” Stupid. Even Burns Strider has it wrong. He’s scrambling to convince us his kids are Americans even though they live in the un-American section of Virginia. Or that he grew up on Mississippi and has some liberal views, but that he’s still an American. This is divisive speak.
The only thing that makes me American is that I am a citizen, I acknowledge that I may have zero in common with my neighbor and I relish that fact. Being called un American means nothing to me. Let’s think collectively and positively, and not scramble to defend our Americanness. Vote for whoever, but vote with vigor.

Is this American? Does it follow the American principles set out by our founding fathers?
Let’s take a look at the practice Sen. Obama wanted to continue. The 5 Step Partial Birth Abortion procedures:
A. Guided by ultrasound, the abortionist grabs the baby’s leg with forceps. (Remember this is a live baby)
B. The baby’s leg is pulled out into the birth canal.
C. The abortionist delivers the baby’s entire body, except for the head.
D. The abortionist jams scissors into the baby’s skull. The scissors are then opened to enlarge the hole.
E. The scissors are removed and a suction catheter is inserted. The child’s brains are sucked out, causing the skull to collapse. The dead baby is then removed.
God help him.
There is a reason Obama opposed the parental notification law.
Think about this: You can’t give a child an aspirin without parental notification but that same child can have an abortion without parental notification. This is insane. It’s interesting how defensive candidates are when this subject is brought to bear. Heaven help us all.

90% of fetus that test for Down Syndrome are aborted. Those aren’t just liberal women who are doing it. If you go into a church of any real size and don’t see any of these children there, you know somebody had something taken care of.
Not every woman, like Sarah Palin a conservative and a close relative of mine, a very liberal Democrat, chose to carry to term a baby when the alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), unconjugated estriol (uE3), and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) test come back with bad news. I just know from experience that women of means, even neo-conservatives, will continue to have safe, private abortions. Banning the procedure in the US won’t change that.

Do you need to identify with a group(Conservative, Crunchy Conservative, Evangelical Conservative, Moderate Conservative..!)for the purpose of groupthink – so that you know how to behave, worship, think, and who to vote for?
And do you label others so that it makes it easier to judge them based on what said label must determine about their lifestyle, views, spirituality, etc.?

We don’t have room for an O.S. moment like this. This has to do with our position in the world. It’s about freedoms that have made the U.S. the place people want to live. I won’t let that go for any uncertainty, it’s only 4 years, but it is the National Security and it is the remaining of United States, not divided races, where I-part of the mud race-don’t even know where I fit in. Such foolishness and the media is the circulatory system of the toxins. I hope there will be many a bended knee for this decision, rather than an open wallet. In the end, it’s not the green that is going to mean anything (it has no value now), it’s who you speak for and Who will speak for you.
God bless us all, as Christ said on the cross, “Father forgive them, they know not what they do.”
~and I have my resources, so challenge me, God is Grand.
love and forgive.

Just a brief correction…. Gov. Sarah Palin is a Republican, NOT a Democrat. Did I read it correctly that you are related to her??

After hearing Palin & Bachman’s comments, and also the way Palin & McCain stir up the unstable in their base into yelling out “Terrorist” and “Kill him!” about Obama; Maria, Bruce, & especially Frances’ comments scare me with the hatred and misinformation they spew. I find it especially amusing all this negative talk about “socialism”. “Socialism” is behind Medicare, and also paying the salaries and the healthcare programs for our elected officials, Police, and Firefighters. Bottom line, I want to make sure that the next President/VP are smarter than me, not someone who got into the Naval Academy due to his connections and then graduated 5th from the bottom of his class! It took Palin 6 years and 5 colleges to finally get just an undergraduate degree… and she still doesn’t know what the VP’s job is! I think it is extremely funny that Frances is still calling Palin a “common person”, when she is wearing $150K of designer duds and her makeup artist made $22K, more than anyone else on the McCain team in the same short time period. Frances’ comments are so bizarre about Palin not being the one “to tote a drink or sleep with shady people”. Where did that come from? Who ever said she does that? or who does Frances think does that?? Michelle? Jill? Then there is Frances’ off the wall comment about “Barry’s RUSSIAN-MEXICO-NICARAGUA METHODS OF THINKING”. I think perhaps it took Frances even longer than Palin to get a degree, if she even has one. I find the people who still buy into the Bush/McCain/Palin thinking and way of doing things have the lack of intelligence of George W. Bush and the misguided, racist views of Cheney, Palin, & Bachman. I pray that the calm and steady temperment and superior intelligence of Barack Obama is given a chance to turn our country around from the downward spiral the Bush era has put us in and that all of the racists in this country like Frances will just back off and shut up and let him have a fair chance. Frances thinks if Obama gets elected the country will be a mess…hey Frances! what condition do you think the country is in now??? and Maria, you should pray Obama gets in, he is not racist. The Republicans you think share your views and are on your side, aren’t! Ask Frances…she’d want you on the first boat back to where you came from, right Frances?! In this day and age, there is no room for racism and false rumors that stir the fears of the uninformed and uneducated in this country. Hey Frances, once and for all, Barack “Hussein” Obama is not a Muslim, but a Christian! Even if he was a Muslim, that shouldn’t make a difference because this country was built on religious freedom and not all Muslims are terrorists and/or subscribe to Osama bin Laden’s hateful philosophy and actions. Last, wouldn’t it be wonderful if racism in our country could be reduced and ended someday? I truly believe that Barack Obama is “the one” to take us down that road. (Frances, I am a Christian that believes in Christ…so don’t make any of your stupid assumptions about my above comments).

I have been watching some of the rallies that Palin has been speaking at and it almost feels as though she forgot her white hood at home. Christian white folk are not the only people who make up this great country – there are many other races and religions too. They are no better or worse. Christianity becomes very ugly when it is distorted (just like any other religion), to suit your political agenda. God created the world and all the people in it, let us not be so short sighted to think that we are better than anyone else, we were all created equal. So Mrs. Palin you better go back to church and learn to love your fellow man, no matter the color of their skin or their religous affiliation, we are all Americans wether you like it or not.

This Letter Was Written By A African American Christian. Christian People You Need to Wake UP!! There is racism on both sides. Just not on the white side.
A few months ago I was asked for my perspective on Obama, I sent out an email with a few points. With the election just around the corner I decided to complete my perspective. Those of you on my e-list have seen some of this before but it’s worth repeating…
First I must say whoever wins the election will have my prayer support. Obama needs to be commended for his accomplishments but I need to explain why I will not be voting for him. Many of my friends process their identity through their blackness. I process my identity through Christ. Being a Christian (a Christ follower) means He leads I follow. I can’t dictate the terms He does because He is the leader.
I can’t vote black because I am black; I have to vote Christian because that’s who I am. Christian first, black second. Neither
should anyone from the other ethnic groups vote because of ethnicity. 20 years from now I won’t be asked if I was black or white. I will be asked if I knew Jesus and accepted Him as Lord and Savior.
In an election there are many issues to consider but when a society gets abortion, same-sex marriage, embryonic stem-cell
research, human cloning to name a few, wrong economic concerns will soon not matter.
We need to follow Martin Luther King’s words, don’t judge someone by the color of their skin but by the content of their
character. I don’t know Obama so all I can go off is his voting record. His voting record earned him the title of the most liberal senator in the US Senate in 2007. NATIONAL JOURNAL: Obama: Most Liberal Senator in 2007 (01/31/2008) To beat Ted Kennedy and Hilary Clinton as the most liberal senator, takes some doing. Obama accomplished this feat in 2 short years. I wonder what
would happen to America if he had four years to work with.
There is a reason Planned Parenthood gives him a 100 % rating.
There is a reason the homosexual community supports him.
There is a reason Ahmadinejad, Chavez, Castro, Hamas etc. love him.
There is a reason he said he would nominate liberal judges to the Supreme Court.
There is a reason he voted against the infanticide bill.
There is a reason he voted No on the constitutional ban of same-sex marriage.
There is a reason he voted No on banning partial birth abortion.
There is a reason he voted No on confirming Justices Roberts and Alito. These two judges are conservatives and they have since overturned partial birth abortion. The same practice Obama wanted to continue.
Let’s take a look at the practice he wanted to continue:
The 5 Step Partial Birth Abortion procedures:
A. Guided by ultrasound, the abortionist grabs the baby’s leg with forceps.(Remember this is a live baby)
Think about this: You can’t give a kid an aspirin without parental notification but that same kid can have an abortion
without parental notification. This is insane.
There is a reason he went to Jeremiah Wright’s church for 20 years. Obama tells us he has good judgment but he sat under
Jeremiah Wright teaching for 20 years. Now he is condemning Wright’s sermons. I wonder why now?
Obama said Jeremiah Wright led him to the Lord and discipled him. A disciple is one in training. Jesus told us in Matthew 28:19 – 20 ‘Go and make disciples of all nations.’ This means reproduce yourself. Teach people to think like you, walk like you; talk like you believe what you believe etc. The question I have is what did Jeremiah Wright teach him?
Would you support a White President who went to a church which has tenets that said they have a
1. Commitment to the White Community
2. Commitment to the White Family
3. Adherence to the White Work Ethic
4. Pledge to make the fruits of all developing and acquired skills available to the White Community.
5. Pledge to Allocate Regularly, a Portion of Personal Resources for Strengthening and Supporting White Institutions
6. Pledge allegiance to all White leadership who espouse and embrace the White Value System
7. Personal commitment to embracement of the White Value System.
Would you support a President who went to a church like that? Just change the word from white to black and you have
the tenets of Obama’s former church. If President Bush was a member of a church like this, he would be called a racist. Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton would have been marching outside.
This kind of church is a racist church. Obama did not wake up after 20 years and just discover he went to a racist church. The
church can’t be about race. Jesus did not come for any particular race. He came for the whole world.
A church can’t have a value system based on race. The churches value system has to be based on biblical mandate. It does not matter if it’s a white church or a black church it’s still wrong. Anyone from either race that attends a church like this would never get my vote.
Obama’s former Pastor Jeremiah Wright is a disciple of liberal theologian James Cone, author of the 1970 book A Black Theology of Liberation. Cone once wrote: ‘Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him.
Cone is the man Obama’s mentor looks up to. Does Obama believe this? So what does all this mean for the nation?
In the past when the Lord brought someone with the beliefs of Obama to lead a nation it meant one thing – judgment. Read 1 Samuel 8 when Israel asked for a king. First God says in 1 Samuel 1:9 ‘Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them
know what the king who will reign over them will do.’ Then God says 1 Samuel 1:18 ‘ When that day comes, you will cry out
for relief from the king you have chosen, and the LORD will not answer yoin that day.’ 19 But the people refused to listen to Samuel. ‘No!’ they said. ‘We want a king over us. 20 Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.’ 21 When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated it before the LORD. 22
The LORD answered, ‘Listen to them and give them a king.’
Here is what we know for sure. God is not schizophrenic. He would not tell one person to vote for Obama and one
to vote for McCain. As the scripture says, a city divided against itself cannot stand, so obviously many people are not hearing from God. Maybe I am the one not hearing but I know God does not change and Obama contradicts many things I read in scripture so I doubt it.
For all my friends who are voting for Obama can you really look God in the face and say; Father based on your word, I am voting for Obama even though I know he will continue the genocidal practice of partial birth abortion. He might have to nominate three or four Supreme Court justices, and I am sure he will be nominating liberal judges who will be making laws that are against you. I also know he will continue to push for homosexual rights, even though you destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for this. I know I can look the other way because of the economy.
I could not see Jesus agreeing with many of Obama’s positions. Finally I have two questions for all my liberal friends. Since we know someone’s value system has to be placed on the nation,
1. Whose value system should be placed on the nation.
2. Who should determine that this is the right value system for the nation

I think that’s like saying a ‘real’ woman or a “real” job. We are what we are, worts and all. Look, I’m not for Palin, I voted Democratic. However, for the first woman to be nominated by a major political party, I think we have to cut her some slack. O.K., I didn’t especially like her, but I recognize the door she’s now opened.

Betty,
Why do you and so many other Christians have such a large beef with homosexuals? Are they not human beings, just like everyone else? Does God not love them like he loves everyone else? Should a president not listen to homosexuals because they lead “sinful” lifestyles? And the author of that letter, Huntley Brown, incorrectly assumes that Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed because of homosexual behavior. Sodom and Gomorrah is mentioned about 44 times in the Bible, and in 43 of those mentions, sexual activity is not discussed at all. It is more likely that it was destroyed because it was hostile towards guests and outsiders, and did not take care of the poor and needy. As Ezekiel 16:48-49 states “As I live, saith the Lord GOD, Sodom thy sister hath not done, she nor her daughters, as thou hast done, thou and thy daughters. Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fullness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.” There is no mention of homosexuality there-yet there is mention of greed and hardheartedness toward the poor and needy. I don’t see why Betty and Huntley Brown have such contempt towards the gay community-even if they DO embrace sinful sexual practices, they are still human beings deserving of love and respect. A president should pay attention to the needs and concerns of the gay community, just as he/she should pay attention to the needs and concerns of the African-American community, Hispanic-American community, Asian-American community, Irish-American commnity, Italian-American community, Russian-American community, Catholic community, Protestant community, Mormom community, Jewish community, Muslim community, Hindu community, Buddhist community. Sure, each of these groups have sinners among their ranks, but are they not as valuable in the sight of God as everyone else?

And if you really believe homosexuality to be a sin, you should make it clear that your problem is not with HOMOSEXUALS as PEOPLE, but HOMOSEXUALITY as a PRACTICE. You know, love the sinner, hate the sin.
