Who is the real heir to Teddy Roosevelt?

posted by David Gibson | 10:58am Monday October 20, 2008

Teddy Roosevelt.jpgJohn McCain says he is the new TR. And Barack Obama is a socialist who wants to “share the wealth,” as he told the now (in)famous Joe the Plumber (or whatever). But check out Teddy’s “New Nationalism” speech of 1910, and this excerpt via Mark Silk at Spiritual Politics:

No man should receive a dollar unless that dollar has been fairly earned. Every dollar received should represent a dollar’s worth of service rendered–not gambling in stocks, but service rendered. The really big fortune, the swollen fortune, by the mere fact of its size, acquires qualities which differentiate it in kind as well as in degree from what is possessed by men of relatively

Therefore, I believe in a graduated income tax on big fortunes, and in another tax which is far more easily collected and far more effective–a graduated inheritance tax on big fortunes, properly safeguarded against evasion, and increasing rapidly in amount with the size of the estate.

Maybe McCain meant he’s the new Franklin Roosevelt?

The Spiritual Messages of Chanukah and Christmas -- and Their Downsides
Christmas and Chanukah share a spiritual message: that it is possible to bring light and hope in a world of darkness, oppression and despair. But whereas Christmas focuses on the birth of a single individual whose life and mission was itself supposed to bring liberation, Chanukah is about a national

Obama (and Biden) Have No Clue About What's Bothering Their Political Base

Values or Partisanship? TV Ad calls out Graham for caving on climate
by Keely Brewster It was disappointing that Lindsey Graham changed his mind, values, and opinions surrounding climate legislation. Teddy Roosevelt said “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” That sounds a lot more like Obama than the ranting John McCain.
Teddy Roosevelt was an labor reformer, environmentalist, a leader and an opportunist who served this country well. John McCain has many of the same qualities but he is not Teddy or can he be compared with him. The main difference is, Teddy could maintain a level head in crisis and always had a respect for his enemies.
Obama also has many qualities of Teddy but he can’t be compared with him either. We do not know how he will react under the strain of the office in crisis but I hope he has a “brown suit” like Ike in his closet. Obana does have a winning smile like Teddy
