Best Religious Books of 2008

posted by Paul Raushenbush | 11:33am Tuesday December 23, 2008

I have two favorite religious books for 2008.  The first one is Saving Paradise: How Christianity Traded Love of this World for
Crucifixion and Empire
by Rita Brock and Rebecca Parker.

This is a great book for those of us who are looking for
some serious theological reflection on the rightful place of Jesus, the cross, salvation
and kingdom of God in this world.
Rita Brock and Rebecca Parker are scholars of the first rate.  It is not an
“easy read” but the long needed correction to current blithely accepted atonement theology is worth it.

The second is Sea Is So Wide and
My Boat Is So Small, The: Charting a Course for the Next Generation
, by Marian Wright
Edelman.  While not as theological
as Brock and Parker’s book, Edelman, founder of the Children’s Defense Fund,
wakes the reader up with a stirring call to do right by our children and thereby do
right by God.

Taken together, these two books by three powerful women remind us that
Jesus came to redeem us spiritually and physically right here on earth.  This Christmas let’s remember Mary
‘ song from Luke: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my
savior…God has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the
lowly; God has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty….”   Brock, Parker, and Edelman
are bringing Mary’s message to us again in 2008 with these great books.

What other suggestions do Progressive Revival readers have?  Please add them below.

When Generosity, Love, and Kindness are Public Policy, the Violence We Saw in Arizona will Dramatically Diminish
The attempted assassination of Congresswoman Giffords and the murder of so many others in Arizona has elicited a number of policy suggestions, from gun control to private protection for elected officials, to banning incitement to violence on websites either directly or more subtly (e.g., Sarah Palin

The Spiritual Messages of Chanukah and Christmas -- and Their Downsides
Christmas and Chanukah share a spiritual message: that it is possible to bring light and hope in a world of darkness, oppression and despair. But whereas Christmas focuses on the birth of a single individual whose life and mission was itself supposed to bring liberation, Chanukah is about a national

Obama (and Biden) Have No Clue About What's Bothering Their Political Base
Shortly before the California Democratic primary in 2008, the San Fransisco Chronicle invited me to write a short article explaining why I, chair of the interfaithNetwork of Spiritual Progressives, was supporting Barack Obama. Like most other progressive activists, I understood that a pres

Values or Partisanship? TV Ad calls out Graham for caving on climate
by Keely Brewster It was disappointing that Lindsey Graham changed his mind, values, and opinions surrounding climate legislation. Lindsey Graham was right when he discussed the need to decrease our dependence on foreign oil for reasons of national security, economic security, and job loss. Lindsey

All Christians could benefit by reading books by the old Puritan writers of the seventeenth century. Many of them are coming back into print now, so they are often easy to obtain.
