When it came to protecting the right of the Libyan Ambassador to
the UN living immediately next door to me in Englewood, my Democratic
Congressman, Steve Rothman, found his voice, issuing a three page press
release about a deal he had brokered with the State Department 27 years
ago for the Libyans to bizarrely remain in a New Jersey suburb. But when
I asked Rothman, who is Jewish, to give me a comment on Obama’s
degrading treatment of Israel’s elected officials and the
Administration’s opposition to Jews building in all parts of Jerusalem,
his Chief of Staff sent me an email that said the Congressman was “away
for the holidays so we won’t be able to provide you with a statement.”
Attitudes
like these on the part of influential Jewish members of the American
establishment explain why Obama has been allowed to get away with his
appalling treatment of Israel. Yes, it is we Jews who allow it, afraid
to take a stand against a President who is rapidly emerging as the new
Jimmy Carter.
Don’t think Obama isn’t listening.
When it came to endorsing a recent Congressional vote to label the
Turks’ slaughter of over one million Armenians during the first World
War a genocide, Obama quickly broke a campaign pledge, and a moral duty,
to do just that and publicly distanced himself from the term genocide
in order not to offend the Turkish government. And when it came to
hosting the Dalai Lama at the White House, the President of the world’s
sole superpower quickly bowed to Chinese bullying, not only refusing to
greet the great humanitarian publicly but sending him out through the
service entrance of the White House where the Dalai Lama was
photographed surrounded by giant bags of garbage. But when it comes to
treating America’s most reliable ally like a pariah nation, Obama has no
fear of the American Jewish community because he’s convinced there will
be no price to pay. The Jews are too timid to react.
How sad that we Jews have become so politically pathetic. Although
there were grave suspicions about Obama’s position on Israel before the
campaign, greatly compounded by his having sat through 20 years of
vitriol toward Israel from his own pastor, American Jewry gave Obama the
benefit of the doubt. Nearly eighty percent of American Jews voted for
him against a proven friend of Israel in John McCain. But fool me once,
shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Amid the Jewish propensity to
blindly pull the Democrat lever in every vote without even thinking, if
Obama gets anything more than twenty percent of the Jewish vote in 2012
it will be a manifestation of a community which simply doesn’t know how
to stand up for its itself and has contempt for its own interests.
And spare me the lectures on dual loyalty. If there is one thing the
American people have learned it’s that the Israeli people are their
canaries in the coalmine. Attacks that Israelis experience first just
presage what Americans will later face. Why? Because the Islamic nations
hate Israel for the same reason they hate America. Israel is a bastion
of freedom in a region of tyranny. The Mullahs are religious, the Arab
dictators mostly secular. But what they share in common is an absolute
desire to rule absolutely. They hate Israel and America for its
freedoms. They know that elections will knock them out of power and,
like Saddam, they would face trial for crimes against humanity.
Ahmedenijad hates his own people even more than he hates Israel,
brutalizing and slaughtering them in the streets whenever they stand up
for themselves. The last thing the House of Saud wants is democracy,
preferring to plunder their country’s oil wealth and concentrate it in
the hands of princes of the blood all of whom live like kings. The same
hatred of liberty is harbored by all the other Arab potentates who have
oppressed their people for decades, from Mubarak who has been in power
for three decades, to Kaddafi and the Assads who have stolen power for
four.
The same is true of Israel’s policies of human rights. Israel is the
only country in the Middle East where gays can march openly. Any attempt
to do so in Riyadh would end with the marchers all being decapitated.
Of course, we don’t have to worry about that in Iran since Ahmedenijad
assured us in his lecture at Columbia that Iran has no homosexuals.
And this applies even more importantly in the area of women’s rights.
Israel is the Middle East’s greatest champion of women’s rights, with
women enjoying all the freedoms of men. But the Islamic countries do
everything in their power to oppress women, afraid of the possible
corruption women would bring if they showed an ankle or drove a car.
Rather than pressuring Jews not to build condos in Jerusalem, Obama
ought to pressure the Arabs to liberalize and democratize. He ought to
use his considerable eloquence to state the obvious truth. That until
such time as the Arabs allow their citizens to be free, there will never
be peace in the Middle East. Israel is the solution rather than the
problem. The more Arab countries emulate its market economy and liberal
democracy, the more our oppressed Islamic brothers and sisters will
prosper. They will not need scapegoats, like Jews, to vent their
understandable frustration at their wretched, impoverished lives, all
brought about by clerics and dictators whose steal their money and their
freedoms.
According to many estimates, Muammar Kaddafi is the richest man in
the world, with a net worth of over $70 billion. That a thief and a
murderer of that magnitude is allowed to own a tax-free mansion next
door to me where we, honest and hard working Americans, pay for his
police protection and trash removal, is a travesty of truth and justice.
When American Jews stand up to the lie that Israeli intransigence is
the reason there is war in the Middle East, they end up helping their
Arab brethren as well. Because the last things the five hundred million
Arabs who live under state censorship and political oppression need is
their rulers and clerics finding a convenient scapegoat upon whom to
place the blame for their people’s suffering.
And every time Obama falsely puts the blame on Israel for the Middle
East’s tensions, he puts another nail in the coffin of future Middle
East freedom and Arab democracy and liberty.

Rabbi Shmuley, or whatever you prefer to call yourself, if you think the interest of Israel is more important than that of America, just move to Israel and leave us alone here. Barack is doing what most people in America wants any brave president to do. You Israelis orchestrated and pushed the Iraqi war on us, and look what happened. More than 4000 brave young Americans ended up losing their lives. In the meantime, we are spending billions of dollars (money we don’t even have)on that stupid war, when this country is crying for money to be spend on infrastructure that is rapidly deteriorating.
Israel is stealing lands belonging to Palestine. And if the President is asking your counry to stop stealing, you are telling him that he is disrespecting Israel. What is disrespectful is your country disgracing the Vice President of the United States of America. We give you billions of dollars a year, and what do we get in return–only misery. Why, because we are using our hard earned tax – payers’ money to arm Israel. When Israel commits crime against the Palestinians and gets criticised for it, what we hear is hollering cries of anti-semitism. The question is: aren’t Palestinians also Semites? Are the Arabs not descendants of Shem, and therefore Abraham? Or is it because their mother–Hager–is from Africa, and therefore, they don’t qualify as Semites? Its really funny.
Israel is not a victim in the middle east. That country is an apartheid state, and a purveyor of crime and terrorism–simple

How do you live with such a one sided view of the world. Hmmm I guess low IQ is the reason.
Get it in your pea sized brain….the world has access to information and they have seen what Israel stands for…brutality against Palestinians and then hiding behind never ending Holocaust victimhood.
Whether Arabs are democratic or not does not matter anymore. Stealing land from people is no less a crime than a genocide. Who are you fooling?? Arabs are only a quarter of the world’s muslim population. Every non-arab muslim and most non-muslims disapprove of the racism and thuggery that is going on in the world’s two concentration camps – West Bank and Gaza. No way in hell will we call it Judea and samaria…that’s my defiance to Isralei occupation and I am not even a Palestinian!

“Stealing” land from terrorists is not a crime. It’s a way to keep animals penned in.
American Christians know who their enemy is and it ain’t the Jews. The Jews didn’t bring on 9/11 and they aren’t the ones who try to murder cartoonists.
Sorry about the animals comment. Animals have a sense of morality. Muslims do not.

I almost can’t believe this commentary coming from Rabbi Shumley, whom I regarded as a reasonable man. I find it amazing that such a man would be comfortable with what is going on in Palestine. The systematic racism and brutality that everyday Palestinians endure. Israel is a thug, and you know it. Israel needs to stop the occupation. They are kicking Palestinians out of their homes in the Palestinian E. Jerusalem to make room for ultra right wing orthodox Jews. Israel doesn’t want peace, and that much has been made clear to me. And just because you “annex” some land and say it is yours doesn’t make it so. No country in the world recognizes it as so, and you know this Shmuley.

Israel is not stealing land from Palestinians. This land belongs to Israel God gave it to the Jews and they have been there for more than 3000 years. The Muslims invaded Europe in the 7th century They took over Constantinople and drove out the Christians. Likewise Afghanistan. They drove out the Hindus. The Muslims have occupied peoples’ land until today. Why don’t they give it back.

What nonsense from the esteemed Rabbi. Jews are too “afraid” to take a stand in support of Israel?? What planet do you live on? AIPAC is one of the most powerful lobbying groups in America! Both Democrats and Republicans live in fear of it. At AIPAC events politicians fall all over each other to see who can lavish the most praise on Israel. So don’t give me this nonsense about Jews being timid about their zeal for Israel.
And to say that the Muslim world hates the USA and Israel because we are free almost made me laugh out loud! No sir, they hate us because we support dictators who suppress them and we give unconditional support to Israel as it slaughters and oppresses the Palestinians! Israel has become a brutal, racist militaristic state that needs to be reigned in. That is a fact–not an opinion. When we get serious about justice for the Palestinians then we will see peace in the Middle East. But if we continue on our idiotic course of giving Israel a blank check to do whatever it wants then we will see no end to the violence. (We already give them 3 BILLION a year and without our support Israel would crumble like a stack of cards.)
And it is to be expected that I would see racist posting from people like “Alex” who apparently sees Muslims as evil incarnate. And then there is “Joshua” who babbles the nonsense that “God gave that land to the Jews.” Really? Where does it say that in the Bible Josh? And do you really think that God is a real estate agent who thinks that it is ok to kick out people who have lived in an area of land for centuries just to give it to some people who have not lived there for 2,000 years? Hey maybe God wants us all to give America back to the Native Americans! How about that Josh. Maybe we should kick you out of this country to go live somewhere else because “God” thinks you don’t deserve to live here.
Rabbi Schmuley, you should be ashamed of what you wrote. Your bigotry is obvious to all of us.

In Joshua chapter 1, God said to Joshua, “Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, cross this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them, to the sons of Israel.Every place on which the sole of your foot treads, I have given it to you, just as I spoke to Moses.”
Because of their sins the Jews were driven out of their land, first by the Babylonians and then by the Rommans. Today God has brought them back to the land he gave to their forefathers. God is not a real estate agent. The earth belongs to him.
The Muslims do not have any high moral ground to stand on. They took over Constantinople and renamed it Istanbul. They slaughtered the Christians there and converted the churches into mosques. Today the entire area is Islamised. In the 7th century, the Muslim army invaded Europe to kill the infidels and conquer the world for Allah. This is Islamic imperialism. This is done by the first generation Muslims so you cannot claim that they misunderstood Islam like the Talibans.
As for the suffering in the Gaza strip, this is exactly what Hamas wants. In Sunzi’s Art of War, one commentator wrote, “If you can stir up the soldiers of all ranks with a common anger, then no one can stand up to them.”
Hamas fires missiles into Israel not to kill the Israelis but to kill the Palestinians. They borrow Israeli missiles to kill Palestinians.
The sufferings of the Palestinians are then beamed across the Islamic world to foment hate against Israel. In this they have been eminently successful.

Joshua, please confine your clownish views to yourself. If we are to go by what is written in the Bible, the whole Middle East will be re-arranged and Israel will have no place to be. As a matter of fact,do you know Abraham came from the present day Iraq, and therefore, Israel (according to your logic of biblical justification)can also go to Iraq and claim a place for themselves?
Please, leave that “In Joshua….” crap somewhere else and lets talk of what is actually taking place in the Middle East. It’s true, the Israelis are stealing lands that do not belong to them–and trust me, their actions will come back to haunt them.
There are over 350 million Arabs right there in the Middle East, and Israel (with 7.3 million people–a quarter of whom are Arabs) is located right in the Middle. Meanwhile, knowledge is a growing, shared commodity. And in the near future, these Arabs will develop all kinds weapons (using transferred,or obtained knowledge),capable of neurtralizing the current advantage that Israel (with the help of America)possesses. What will Israel do then? Those who are clamouring for Israel to keep on stealing Palestinian lands are helping Israel to dig its own grave.
The Jimmy Carters, Yitzhak rabins and Obamas of this world are the real friends of Israel. They have the uncanny ability to look beyond the horizon to see what is good for Israel in the Future, and work towards achieving that elusive peace for that country. Can you imagine what tourism alone will bring to the state of Israel and Palestine if they live side-by-side in peace and tranquility?
And you Rabbi Shmuley, if you are a true Rabbi, you should know that the eternal God whom we worship is God of peace who does not discriminate between his children. It’s true, Adonai used the Israelites to bring light to this world. But at the same time, He punishes them when they deviate from His intended path. And this time, Israel is deviating in a monstrous way. And trust me, He would not let them go free.

Abraham was called by God to leave his father’s land to go to the place He promised to give him. Abraham never went back. Iraq is not the promised land. Jimmy Carter and Yitzhak Rabin are sincere leaders who want peace. Judas Obama hates Israel. Why the Jewish leaders voted for him is incomprehensible. In any case, Jewish foolishness is biblical. Just open the Bible and you will see how often God was angry with them. As for the dividends of peace, don’t hope for it. Islam and Israel cannot co-exist. The destruction of Israel is the ultimate goal of Muslims. Mohammad said that they will kill all the Jews. If a Jew were to hide behind a stone, the stone will say, “There is a Jew hiding behind me. Kill him.”

The US is in trouble in Iraq & Afghanistan, and with the rise of Islamism worldwide, and is considering sacrificing Israeli interests to gain leverage with moderate Arabs. Israel needs to protect its interests, and it is critical to understand why American Jews don’t stand up and oppose this strategy.
Although Israelis have of necessity become fighters, safe comfortable American Jews (like me) have been more concerned about feeling virtuous and being accepted. Particularly for non-religious Jews (like me), virtue & social acceptability have come to be identified with leftist values, and leftists always oppose power & the status quo. It is therefore very uncomfortable for secular Jews to accept that Islamists, and their designated victims, the Palestinians, need to be beaten rather than appeased.
My personal wake-up call came on 9/11/2001, around which time I got clear that religion is a problem, that Islam is by far the worst problem, and that Western Civilization had a long fight ahead.

I always find it puzzling that American Jews complain about being marginalized or overlooked in matters of national policy or world diplomacy.
Is there a segment of government, finance or even national security where Jews are not more than generously represented? Should I list some of Pres. Obama’s chief advisors, nominees and endorsers who are well Jewish (some even holding dual Israeli-US citizenship?!)
I believe it’s high time Americans of Jewish descent and those of dual citizenship should recognize the duty of US lawmakers and military to put America first and Israel, Palestine, the Baltic or Eastern Europe states, as the case may be, second.
Israel always strikes me as assuming the moral high ground and sternly dictating others what to do – if and when Israeli politicians are wrong they must be called out and should not resort to painting criticism of policy as criticism of ethnicity.

Since public opinion polls in Israel demonstrate a deep degree of division among Israelis over the wisdom of further settlements and their own willingness to trade settlements for a peace agreement, why attack Obama for it? It’s hardly as if the Israelis themselves are monolithic on the topic…. unless one has the mentality that the only true Israelis are the ones who unswervingly support Netanyahu. That proprietary attitude toward patriotism seems to be characteristic of conservatives the world over. God knows we saw enough of it in our own country a few years ago, when every criticism of George W. Bush got the critic tarred as a traitor by loudmouthed right-wingers.
If Israeli conservatives think they can build their way to peace with the Palestinians, good luck to them. That would be as big a miracle as anything in the Bible.

I’ve lived overseas, and some things about current events and history are hard to know… unless you experience them on the ground in the respective country or region.

If you have an opinion, you’re much likely to win folks over by being respectful. And your opinion will be a lot more grounded in reality if you can listen to others.
There’s probably a lot of good Jews and Muslims that would have no problem settling the matter, but they’re caught in the middle.

Given the way political discourse currently goes in the U.S., people tend to make noise when they disagree with something. I don’t believe that Jews have been silent. But even if they were silent, then the silence must mean agreement.
However, there are many Jews who are vocal about the situation between Israel and the Palestinians–Just look at AIPAC and J Street.
As a Jew, I do not support your right wing agenda or the one that holds Netanyahu’s coalition together. Opposing this agenda is not the same thing as opposing Israel.

Somebody get real here. The Rabbi knows, he’s just stirring up the American Jewry with the same rhetoric, so he can blame anti-semitism, everybody hates us, it is all your fault, (this time America’s big time), forget any kind of reason or any other culture or society, the only one that counts for which the world was created is ” the Jews ” , all none jews for-ever hate us etc. etc. etc.
It would never occur to them, to own the consequences of their fanatical beliefe-system. Respect and dignity for all human life. Oh yes, they will give lip-service and what Rabbi’s have taught. The rightous Gentile will also have a share in the world to come. I am sure it will be in service to some Jewish creation.

Excellent article, Rabbi Shmuley, but I disagree with you on one crucial point. I believe that it is America’s Jews who are the real “canaries in the coal mine”, not Israel.
Most American Jews sincerely believe that their liberalism, together with their commitment to the Democratic Party as its main political vehicle, stems from the teachings of Judaism and reflects the heritage of “Jewish values.” Unfortunately, liberalism has been hijacked from its foundations by radical leftist ideology that has always been hostile to Israel.
American Jewry surely belongs with conservatives rather than liberals. For the social, political and moral system that liberals wish to transform is the very system in and through which Jews found a home such as they had never discovered in all their forced wanderings throughout the centuries over the face of the earth.
In 2008, we were faced with a candidate who ran to an unprecedented degree on the premise that the American system was seriously flawed and in desperate need of radical change — not to mention a record powerfully indicating that he would pursue policies dangerous to the security of Israel.
Would Jews finally break free of the liberalism to which they have remained in thrall long past the point where it has served either their interests or their ideals?
That possibility having been resoundingly dashed, we can only hope for some encouragement from the signs that buyer’s remorse is beginning to set in among Jews, as it also seems to be doing among Independents. Which is why I am hoping against hope that the exposure of Obama as a false messiah and matzoh-ball minstrel will at last open the eyes of my fellow Jews to the correlative falsity of the political creed he so perfectly personifies and to which they have for so long been so misguidedly loyal.
