Hey everyone! I really, really need your help.
My first novel, Scared – A Novel on the Edge of the World, has hit the bookshelves. It's getting rave reviews, you can read about 33 of them by clicking HERE. The second one is finished and will release next year. The working title is Sacred, and digs into the darkness of the child sex-trade industry in Russia and run by the mafia.
There is some concern that Sacred is too close too Scared and may cause confusion. So here's what I need: Vote on one of the titles below, including Sacred. If you have a suggestion for a title that isn't listed, please tell me. Leave a comment below or email me at tdavis@hopechest.org. I only have 48 hours to do this and get the results back to Don, my publisher.
Thanks so much, this means a ton to me. By the way, if your title is chosen, your name will appear in the thank you section of the book!
1. Sacred
2. Consecrated
3. Priceless
4. Broken
5. Untouchable

I vote for Broken. . .I think it invokes the same feeling as Scared. I agree that Sacred and Scared are too close to one another as well and think it could be confusing.
Can’t wait to read it though. no matter what it’s called

I like “Sacred” the best of those listed. I think it being close to “Scared” is good…it has some name recognition, and since the main character is the same it works. My humble opinion.

The first title that jumps out at me is Broken, I think it goes along with scared well.

I LOVE Untouchable. It gives victims hope that some things in their lives (self-worth, love of Jesus and hope) are untouchable.

How about: “Wounded”?

I think Sacred and Scared are too close as well. I thought the current book was Sacred when I first saw it here also. I think it depends on whether you want it to be about the wrong done or the love God has for these girls despite what has happened. If it’s about the wrong committed then I like Broken, if it’s about their value as a human then I like Consecrated.
Hope that helps. Good luck deciding.

Totally agree with the Scared/Sacred being confusing. As a publisher, it would make me nervous! I wouldn’t risk it. I like “Betrayed”.
The world has betrayed these young girls and God knows that feeling. It also works as the series unfolds: Scared, Betrayed, etc. so it would be in line for your next book! (you know I love you!)
posted September 1, 2009 at 4:14 pm
“Broken” is what stands out from that list. I also like “Shaken” in regards to what happens to these lives affected by the sex trade industry.
posted September 1, 2009 at 4:15 pm
I like Broken. I agree with Brandi that it fits with the other book title. It also accurately describes a life touched by sexual abuse.

I love Broken.

I’d vote for Untouchable -
It has interesting references to the topic of your book (irony when considering the sex-trade industry, and those in a mafia are often considered “untouchable” in terms of being caught for their crimes).
When I first saw the title Sacred, I read it in my mind as Scared – at first glance they looked the same, so I think it’s a bit confusing.
posted September 1, 2009 at 4:23 pm
I think Broken would work well as a second title
posted September 1, 2009 at 4:33 pm
I like the the title Sacred…but I do understand the thoughts about it being too close to scared.
If you want to stay with that same thought, then Consecrated or Sanctified would also be good titles!

I really like Sacred, but think it may confuse too many. So, for what it’s worth (haha) I thinking Broken or Shattered sound good.
What about adding another word to Sacred… like Nothing Sacred. As in, is nothing sacred anymore…the life of a young girl? I could be on a different page here though.
Good luck!

Tom,
Of the five that are listed, I think “Broken” is the best of them. From a broader sense, I think the title is very appropriate and can logically flow in a series too – first, you have “Scared,” then you have “Broken,” and as we work through these titles that are “negative,” we’d eventually lead to one title that is the turning point, and then to the ultimate victory that only God’s grace would allow.
Just my two cents…

Broken – with the same “flavor” as Scared, it makes me want to find out just what it is that is broken, and makes me believe there will be a way to fix it.

As soon as I read what someone named Karen wrote “Betrayed”, my heart skipped a beat. It follows the title “Scared” nicely, and it is the perfect word for the ultimate betrayal that these precious girls face.
“Betrayed” is my vote.

Tom, I like Shattered the best but of your choices I would go with Broken.
posted September 1, 2009 at 6:55 pm
Broken – this word would best discribe how a child would feel in the sex trade world, I think. Future novels could expand on this word theme – Scared, Broken, Lost, Shattered, Stolen, Forgotten…
Stolen might be good as well – since that’s how a lot of sexually abused children describe how they feel their childhood was “stolen” from them.

I like “Priceless” as a reminder to all about their inherent worth in God’s eyes.

Tom – how you write so many books while leading a thriving ministry is amazing!!! Thinking about the horrors of the sex trade, few words that seem to fit best from the list:
Alone.
Broken.
Betrayed.
Vulnerable.
Unprotected.
Excited to hear what you choose!

PRICELESS or BROKEN….though BETRAYED is a good option, too.

Okay, on second thought. Not PRICELESS. It’s good, but BROKEN or BETRAYED are better as series names to follow SCARED.

Sacred…I like that it’s close to Scared. I also like ‘Nothing Sacred’. I don’t like Broken…negative judgements on the beautiful ones rather than on the abusers. Betrayed is good…actually I might like that more.
Bless you in this process! Colleen

I think I’d be even MORE confusing and go with “Scarred”…to fit in with the broken and shattered notions listed above. Then your third novel could be more on a redemptive theme and be “Sacred”

2. Worthy
3. Broken
I like these three but it’s so hard having not read the book. I have my eyes closed envisioning our little 2 year old girl sitting in her orphanage just referred to us from Ethiopia. Those are the 3 things that come to mind.

PRICELESS is how precious these children are, and yet human traffiking is the second largest criminal “industry” in the world!
.
UNTOUCHABLE is my second choice–because in Christ we are untouchable, yet this industry violates His laws and His will so painfully
VOICELESS is also a STRONG name!
I’d read any of them–but do agree about Sacred being confusing…

Hi Tom,
I totally agree with changing the title for obvious reasons. It could be very confusing.
Here are some ideas Roger & I came up with…
Beloved.
Broken.
Sold.
Lost.
Captive.
Forgotten.
Hope that helps. Roger is VERY excited to travel to Ethiopia with you and Pete Kidd in November!!! “Speak for those who cannot speak for themselves…” Prov. 31:8a

“Captive” would be my idea of a good title for this. After all, Jesus came to “set the captives free.”

I’m in the group that thinks Sacred and Scared are too close and confusing.
I’m voting for Broken and have never liked the term untouchable……no one is untouchable from a Christian perspective and I think it’s a word that carries so much shame.
Wounded is good too.
Shattered conveys something that can’t be ‘fixed’ to me.

My first gut choice was Priceless, which
made me think of Precious, the word that always comes to mind when I think of orphans.

While I love the title “Sacred”, I think I have to side with the publishers. Having spent many years as a bookseller, I think it will be confusing. In fact, following the progress of “Scared” online showed how often people actually call it “Sacred”.
With that said, I would try to stick with a an “S” word in the same form. I would choose:
“Silenced”
This denotes both the secrecy and the fact that it was externally imposed.
Peace,
Jamie

Broken says it simply and clearly. But, in keeping with the ‘…red’ theme, I also like ‘Shattered’. Someone mentioned, ‘Restored’, which could be number three.
Love ya bro. Happy Anniversary!

When I read the choices, I kept thinking of the word “Scarred” instead. Not as confusing as Sacred (because your eyes want to tell you you’re reading the word Scared when you look at Sacred). Scarred is visibly different, and my feeling is that even when redeemed by the Lord’s touch, girls and women who’ve been trapped in the sex trade will always bear “scars” of what they’ve experienced.

I have to say Betrayed is staggering and highly appropriate for this topic. I like Broken, however, I feel like it is overused and diluted as a result. It is a bit more “acceptable” than being Scared or Betrayed.
