With all the talk about the return of Jean Claude Duvalier, Haiti’s former dictator, to his former country, Haiti is back in the news. The country is still devastated from the earthquake and only 5% of the buildings have been rebuilt.

But the story that is often told is the one of Haiti’s orphans. Because of early death and disease In 2007, UNICEF estimated there were 380,000 orphans in Haiti.. Since the earthquake, the number of orphans in Haiti may have doubled.

The most heartbreaking report to come out says that over 2000 orphans in Haiti have been sold into the sex trade by child traffickers. A  “babies and toddlers have also been taken from makeshift camps in the capital Port-au-Prince and sold for as little as 30 pounds a child, the Daily Express reported. British news agency reports: The UN also reported an upsurge in child trafficking and most have ended up in neighbouring Dominican Republic or sold in the Caribbean and Latin America.”
