Americans get too little sleep

I never get seven hours of sleep, I average 4-6 hours. How about you?

With late-night TV watching, Internet surfing and other distractions, Americans are getting less and less sleep, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday.

And all this sleeplessness can be a nightmare for your mental and physical health, CDC experts cautioned, calling sleep loss an under-recognized public health problem.

Sleep experts say chronic sleep loss is associated with obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, cardiovascular disease, depression, cigarette smoking and excessive drinking.

The CDC surveyed 19,589 adults in four states. Ten percent reported they did not get enough sleep or rest every single day of the prior month, and 38 percent said they did not get enough in seven or more days in the prior month.

[...]

The National Sleep Foundation recommends adults get seven to nine hours of sleep a night. Children ages 5 to 12 should get nine to 11 hours and those 11 to 17 need 8-1/2 to 9-1/2 hours.

BTW, I don't have any of the health problems on the list. I know you lefties think it's affected my mental health though :-)

Reid continues to push for surrender in Iraq

Even Angelina Jolie doesn't think we should leave Iraq, when do you think Reid will get it? Oh yeah, when President Obama says that we can't remove our troops yet.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid pledged on Thursday to continue trying to end the Iraq war even though he lacks the votes to force a troop withdrawal.

The Senate wrapped up its first round of debate on the war this year with little fanfare. After two days of discussion, Republicans refused to advance the bill. As a result, Democrats were forced to shelve proposals by Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., that would have cut off money for combat and demanded a new strategy for defeating al-Qaida.

The procedural wrangling left majority Democrats defeated, even without a final vote cast on either measure.

"We'll be back," said Reid, D-Nev., noting that this spring the Senate will debate whether to approve an additional $100 billion for the war. The Senate also will consider legislation to rein in contractor abuse, he said.

Abilene Christian University to Give iPhones to Freshmen

Uh oh! I better not let Sarah see this or she might be tempted to go.

An Apple iPhone or iPod touch will become a central part of Abilene Christian University's innovative learning experience this fall when all freshmen are provided one of these converged media devices, said Phil Schubert, ACU executive vice president.

At ACU - the first university in the nation to provide these cutting-edge media devices to its incoming class - freshmen will use an iPhone or iPod touch to receive homework alerts, answer in-class surveys and quizzes, get directions to their professors' offices, and check their meal and account balances - among more than 15 other useful web applications already developed, said ACU Chief Information Officer Kevin Roberts.
