General Dynamics to build robot vehicles

Sunday March 2, 2008

Categories: Technology

OK, so a commenter to this post said that we shouldn't worry about killer robots because the can't fly a plane. But how about robots who can drive?

General Dynamics will build robotic vehicles to conduct surveillance and other security tasks for the Army under a five-year contract that could be worth as much as $40 million.

The semi-autonomous security vehicles are designed to perform a number of surveillance activities without the aid of a human driver, including checking for intruders and monitoring stored ordnance.

A robot that can drive would be a blessing to all of us who would love to have someone else drive the car while we relax and watch the traffic.

Yeah, until you give the thing a gun and then it's willing to take you out because man is an unnecessary hindrance to the planet (it might discover that as it's driving you around and decide to leak carbon monoxide into the car that you will be unable to stop because it controls the window and door locks).
