Mmmkay. No McCain bashing from me today either.

Well, how sweet!

I don’t know if I’ve bothered to mention McCain in the first place. But thanks anyway.
If nothing else, was getting repetitive. (Not going to bother to comment on the ‘lefties’ part either.)

“Not going to bother to comment on the ‘lefties’ part either”
That’s good because I’ve debated on it for awhile and decided that I like the term and I’ve got to call you something. I could call you libs, would you like that better?

This southpaw doesn’t mind “lefties.”

Got no problem with libs. Got a problem with ‘cons’?
posted May 18, 2008 at 6:54 pm
Please! I’ve been called much worse on this blog and you don’t see me complaining! Why do you hate lefty so much?
posted May 18, 2008 at 7:18 pm
Let’s see.. family McCarthy flashbacks. And why is ‘cons’ bad if ‘libs’ isn’t?
The only one who didn’t object was one who associated it with being lefthanded.

Hooray. But in my opinion, is it not a bad thing that we have degraded our politics to where we can say one word and manage to have it garner such a negative reaction? Why do we throw around terms like “liberal” and “conservative” as though they were insults in the first place? Do we feel that deep down, people identify themselves as these things only so they can get such a reaction? Why do we have this tendency to attach so many things to what makes a “liberal” or a “conservative”? Both of these ideals can be good at times when looked at through their own definition.
Liberal: to be free, to grow
Conservative: to save, to conserve
These things are good; the problem is when we take one position that is “liberal” and believe that everything should be so; same as with conservative. After introspection, perhaps we would all be best to realize that, regardless of being on the left or right, people hold onto these “truths” sincerely and because they honestly believe that the positions would create the greatest benefit for the common good and not simply to annoy the opposing side or to be stupid or ignorant or evil.

“Why do we throw around terms like “liberal” and “conservative” as though they were insults in the first place?”
I am very far from evil or uncaring.
I’m not using lefties as an insult, I’m using it as a designation and a term of endearments.
“people hold onto these “truths” sincerely and because they honestly believe that the positions would create the greatest benefit for the common good and not simply to annoy the opposing side or to be stupid or ignorant or evil.”
You know, I agree with this completely though I may not sound like it in my posts or comments. I keep wanting to stereotype the commenters but it’s hard because I believe that they have their own view and their own reason for their view. I just wish they wouldn’t stereotype me as well

Oh no, I’m not saying that you do, Michele. However, there are some people (some of whom seem to frequent this board and David Kuo’s) who would say the term “progressive” as though it were listed as an abomination in Leviticus. One would think that someone who hates it when the term “evangelical” or “conservative” is used to describe:
someone who places patriotism and Republicanism above religious values
someone who wants a Holocaust on the GLBT community
someone who sees Christianity as a business venture
someone who will fight to the death for the unborn, but leave actual living children to starve
Not saying that I support any of these assumptions, of course, but just saying that someone who would become sensitive when such comparisons are made would then turn around and suggest that “progressive” means:
someone who enjoys sodomy
someone who enjoys killing babies
someone who worships sex, drugs, and taxes above spiritual values
It is simply becoming unfathomable for me to think that we can so easily define people with one word.

You make a very good point especially for those of us who claim to be Christians, why are we throwing insults around? Hmmm…you’re making me rethink the whole lefty thing again. Even though I don’t take it as an insult but others do, I probably don’t even want to give the appearance of insulting others with name calling. Hmmm…maybe it’s time to offer the other side an olive branch?
posted May 20, 2008 at 3:58 am
are you planning to whip lefties with it?
i have no problem with the label “liberal” when it’s not used as a pejorative, which most times by conservatives these days it is. i think this is partly why your posts have (what you claim to be) unintentional barbs.
an interesting experiment would be to replace labels like libs, cons, neo-cons, lefties, righties, etc with “some americans.”

by the way, michele, i appreciate your honesty for a change in admitting the “obama bashing.” that’s refreshing to encounter.

See, this is why I find it hard to be nice

What? Of course it’s bashing Obama, just as you guys bash me in the comments. What else would you call it? I guess you’re referring to the one post in which I didn’t think I was necessarily bashing him? Well, I know that about 80% of the time I am. And I’m not ashamed to admit it.

You darned well SHOULD be. It’s the old “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” principle – which is the SUM of the laws and the prophets. You remember principles, don’t you?

Which in itself is a 180 degree about face from your post of les than 24 hours earlier…

That’s SOME “olive branch – being an unashamed basher.

I see nothing wrong or inconsistent with my Christianity by pointing out the problems with Obama’s policies. I’m sorry that you can’t understand that, it doesn’t make me a hypocrite, it just makes you ill-informed.
BTW, the olive branch is to my readers not the presidential candidates. I’m going to comment on them all I want. But I’m going to refrain from name calling.
And talk about hitting someone over the head with the olive-branch. You might want to look in the mirror.

except that you’ve yet to point out any problems with obama’s policies. oh sure, you might think they’re problematic… but that’s because you’re “ill-informed.”
