I don't think it's so easy for some people to get such ID's. First of all, you have to get to the place where they're issued. There's usually some kind of fee involved. You may need to produce a birth certificate issued by the state, not simply by the hospital where you were born. Etc. etc. I think it's easy for middle-class people, with cars, access to computers, the confidence to face down bureaucrats and so forth, to underestimate what it takes for someone who's poor, and/or elderly, and/or reliant on public transportation (such as it is!), to do what seems to us a fairly routine thing.
Besides, we should make it as easy as possible for people to participate in our democracy. So I'm with you: once you're registered, you should be good to go. Besides, think of the $$$ it costs to maintain a bureaucracy that issues these IDs. Then poll workers have to deal with turning people away, which is a waste of their time and causes delays.
The plain fact is, this whole voter ID thing is backed by Republicans because they want to disenfranchise as many Democratic voters as possible, because our party tends to have a far greater percentage of the very people who are likely to have more difficulty jumping through the hoops necessary to obtain the ID. But given the record numbers of new voter registrations, it's unlikely that this scheme will have the desired effect. However, it's still wrong if even one voter loses his or her opportunity to exercise the franchise.

"A 'recommendation' by Michele was enough to make me avoid it."

So, I wish they'd make up their minds whether they honor homeland security through tough ID standards or voters' rights with lax ID standards. It's the ol' security/convenience trade-off.
