Marine expelled for throwing puppy over cliff

posted by Susan Johnson | 11:02am Thursday June 12, 2008

The Marine who threw a puppy over a cliff, recorded it and then posted it on YouTube is “being processed for separation” (typical military language):

The Marine Corps said Wednesday it was expelling one Marine and disciplining another for their roles in a video showing a Marine throwing a puppy off a cliff while on patrol in Iraq.
The 17-second video posted on YouTube drew sharp condemnation from animal rights groups when it came to light in March.
The clip shows two Marines joking before one hurls the puppy into a rocky gully. A yelping sound is heard as it flips through the air.
“That’s mean. That’s mean, Motari,” an off-camera Marine is heard telling the Marine who tossed the black and white dog. The off-camera Marine snickered slightly afterward.
Lance Cpl. David Motari, assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment at Kaneohe Bay, is “being processed for separation” from the Marine Corps, the Marine Corps said in a news release. He also received unspecified “non-judicial punishment.”

One Final Word
My dear friend Michele slipped into eternity on Wednesday, February 1.   She was a remarkable woman who left a legacy of faith, determination, and love. For three years she courageously battled the ovarian cancer that eventually robbed her of her life.  A few days before she died, one of her docto

The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated
My husband told me that there are rumors that I've died. I'm happy to report that I'm still very much alive. My cancer has gone to stage four but we are controlling it with chemo, the cancer numbers are currently in the normal range. I've stopped blogging to concentrate on my daughters and writing a

An update and a prayer request
Several people have asked about Michele's condition, and have promised to pray for her. On her behalf, I thank you for that. I spoke with her a little while ago, and she asked that I come here and tell you what's going on, and to ask you to pray for her. She isn't able to post here herself right

The peace that passes all understanding, pt. 1
I'm coming out of my normal hiding place to make a few comments. The internet is a strange place. It is often a wonderful place, a helpful place, a unifying place. But it is also alienating, cold, and is the perfect medium in which to depersonalize others. Through it, I have seen people reach out

The guy needs therapy. Otherwise, he may throw a human being off a cliff next time around.

But the Marines were absolutely right to expel him.

I’m a veteran and I support the troops, but I do believe that this type of behavior is partly a by-product of the extremely aggressive training and indoctrination given to our direct combat units, especially infantry and especially the Marines. They encourage a very strong kill-or-be-killed mentality. It’s what makes them such effective soldiers, but it also de-sensitizes them to a certain degree. Combine that with a person who is perhaps naturally cruel to begin with, and this is what you get. This and war crimes.
It becomes a real double-edged sword. I like the security they provide, but some of the conduct and attitudes I witnessed in the service made me uncomfortable. It’s one of the reasons I left. I’m not sure what the answer is.

Good, I could care less about the puppy but that was just criminally stupid and the military doesn’t need guys like him going on.

This made me so sick. I guess anybody is taken into the military nowdays. it is really getting dark out there but we have to shine forth our lights of Jesus for those who want to change.

“the military doesn’t need guys like him”
Hmmm …
“They have reduced the educational standards, for example, so that they’re getting more soldiers who didn’t go to high school, let alone graduate from high school.
Recruiters are granting thousands of what they call “moral waivers”. A “moral waiver” it turns out means they’ll take someone who has committed a crime or even someone who has been in prison. Last year, a total of 8,129 “moral waivers” were given to men who volunteered for the Army.”
Andy Rooney, 60 Minutes
And don’t let’s forget that they fired very capable (and much needed) Arabic translators simply because they were gay.
Maybe the military DOES ‘need’ these aggressive, dog-murdering types – to fill in so many vacancies caused by sheer stupidity and homophobia.
OR, maybe America needs to re-think its selection for “Commander/Decider-in-Chief”. The current one is a disml failure on so many counts, prime among them being his dishonesty.

So, recovering ex-whatever, I’m assuming you can prove that THIS PARTICULAR Marine was recruited under some kind of moral or educational waiver? NO? Then you’re just using this sad incident to make yet another frivolous swipe at the administration. Thanks for clearing that up.

I’m no fan of this administration. But whatever level of this administration made this decision, they were right.
My father, who was a Marine in WWII, told me of his comrades knocking gold teeth out of Japanese soldiers, dead and alive, and dumping the bodies in a lagoon. Atrocities of the other side are well known. War brings out horrible things in good people. But the difference was, nobody posted the second world war on YouTube.
