Moveon.org's really stupid McCain ad

Tuesday June 17, 2008

Categories: Politics

If this is the best that the 3 million members of Moveone.org can come up with, they might want to hire more competent help.

This poor woman is very confused. Um...honey, just to reassure you, your baby will only be 8 when McCain leaves office (if he even gets a second term), so I wouldn't worry about him sending your child over to Iraq. Oh, and maybe you didn't realize that we have a volunteer army and if you adult son doesn't want to go, we won't send him. Rest assured and enjoy your baby.

Yes, this ad goes straight for the lowest common denominator--but then again, what about the power of images such as The PIETA? What about mothers grieving over their sons lost in war? Check out the Talmudic passages where Sarah begs Abraham not to take her son off on some male journey because she senses he's going to be killed? We certainly don't seem to expect Dads to fight to keep their sons out of war; at least we still expect at least some resistance on the part of moms. And, no, this is not about conscription; it's about the fetishization of the military and violence throughout the world.

"if my step-grand-daughter enlists in the military I will disown her"

Maybe cold-hearted and irrational attitudes like THAT are the reasons you're divorced and have only a "step" granddaughter.

I do not regard the draft as at all improbable, should the neocons have their way. They want to have more wars against Iran, and possibly others like Syria. We would win the war, but it's the occupation that is diffucult, as we and a lot of others have found out.
Both of my grandfathers were drafted into WW1 and my father was a draftee in WW2. My father saw a lot of action, and it affected him to this day. A friend of mine's father was on the beach on D-Day, and he still wakes up screaming about the Germans some nights, all these years later.
I think it is the ultimate sin for a leader to take a nation to war - unless we are attacked , or as a last resort only. Bush has taken us to war on misinformation, and that's why his family has bought land in Ecuador, which would not give him up to the World Court for trial for war crimes. Look it up - it's true.

The fetishization is infantizing our military.

I doubt that the draft will ever be reinstated given how high-tech our military has become. You need career soldiers, not guys who don't want to be there.
