Stomach stapling without the surgery

posted by Susan Johnson | 3:59pm Wednesday July 30, 2008

They go through the mouth and staple the stomach without having to cut which will probably result in more obese people choosing the procedure. I can’t decide if that’s a good thing or not. On the one hand, obesity is a killer and they would be prolonging their life, on the other hand, there’s something to be said for learning to discipline yourself through diet and exercise and the sense of accomplishment when you reach your goal.BTW, did you know that Jessie Jackson, Jr. had gastric bypass? Ann Rice and Jerry B. Jenkins also had it.(via)

One Final Word
My dear friend Michele slipped into eternity on Wednesday, February 1.   She was a remarkable woman who left a legacy of faith, determination, and love. For three years she courageously battled the ovarian cancer that eventually robbed her of her life.  A few days before she died, one of her docto

The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated
My husband told me that there are rumors that I've died. I'm happy to report that I'm still very much alive. My cancer has gone to stage four but we are controlling it with chemo, the cancer numbers are currently in the normal range. I've stopped blogging to concentrate on my daughters and writing a

An update and a prayer request
Several people have asked about Michele's condition, and have promised to pray for her. On her behalf, I thank you for that. I spoke with her a little while ago, and she asked that I come here and tell you what's going on, and to ask you to pray for her. She isn't able to post here herself right

Rest in peace, Internet Monk.
A man known in the cyber world as The Internet Monk, has died. Michael Spencer lost his battle with cancer tonight. My prayers go out for his family and for all those who loved and will miss him. :(

The peace that passes all understanding, pt. 1
I'm coming out of my normal hiding place to make a few comments. The internet is a strange place. It is often a wonderful place, a helpful place, a unifying place. But it is also alienating, cold, and is the perfect medium in which to depersonalize others. Through it, I have seen people reach out

Isn’t it true that, for diabetics, this procedure can end insulin dependence?

Now, if we can only staple Tim LaHaye’s mouth shut when he says stupid things like:
“McCain and Romney would be like oil and water,” said evangelical novelist Tim LaHaye, who supported Mr. Huckabee. “We aren’t against Mormonism, but Romney is not a thoroughgoing evangelical”

Hey TIM, we aren’t voting for Pastor of the United States!

No. If you are truly insulin dependent it usually means that you stay that way because the pancreas just does not work any more. It can end diabetes in some type two folks however.
I’ve known a number of folks who had the stapling and it does help but they have to watch a very strict diet for the rest of their lives or the weight just comes back.

Are there any clinical studies looking for participants for this procedure?

I find your comment about obese people being able to discipline themselves to be quite offensive. I exercise regularly and eat well. Still I am overweight. I am well aware of the side effects and can’t wait for a procedure like this to become more mainstream. Diabetes runse rampant in my family and it is my only hope at a “normal” size and thus, a “normal” life.
I would love for you to put a fat suit on and spend a month in an obese person’s shoes. It would teach you a valuable lesson about who people are and what the worth of a person should be measured by.

You shouldn’t just assume that people are fat, because of over eating and lack of exercise. There are many more contributing health problems, that can lead to somebody being overwieght. It is just incredibly ignorant of you to think that people who are overweight are getting these surgeries, because they have no self control and dicipline, when in fact the majority of the people who get these type of surgeries are getting them as a “last hope”. These people have tried just about everything in the book, and none of it works.
